I'm having a helluva time learning the right amount of wicking material to use. I watched Todd's and Damien's vids several times before starting, and then rewatched them again when I first tried building mine. Getting the coils mounted is indeed a cinch, but they are NOT kidding about not skimping on the cotton.

My issue seems to be that when I screw down the chimney over the coils and wicks, it's pulling the cotton around. I haven't figured out what to do about that yet. I've successfully vaped one whole tank, but of course, that was after wasting a load of liquid. And it DOES vape really, REALLY well. If it didn't, I'd have given up by now.

I don't know if that one good tank was due to sheer luck or the amount of cotton I finally wound up with. I tried to replicate it exactly but it still wet itself, despite having the air holes completely closed and tilting while filling with a syringe.

So, more photos of successful (hell, even UNsuccessful) builds would be hugely appreciated. I'll eventually stumble across the "trick" but I'd like to minimize juice wastage.

i took a very small screwdriver and made an open spot for the chimney to slide down on.
youve got to have quite a bit of wicking materiel around the channels.

I played around a bit with it....leaked a little once. Frankly...lots....I mean lots of cotton but not pressed in that hard. Keeping it fluffy. I made sure, with the edge of a tweezer, that it was a little lighter by the "wall". I still have cotton in the channels (not packed in there, tho)..screwed it down....no leaking after at least 7 or 8 rewicking efforts. I'm still playing with different coils and such...

this is old wick

100_0101.jpg
this is how long i trim for bottom wick
the top wick is trimmed about 1/4 in longer

this is before priming

this is after priming the wicks
i try to move wick away from channels so chimney doesnt move wick at all during installation
im hitting this thang like a freight train while typing....works great for me

Wow, thanks heaps for the photos!!! That is totally different from what I've been doing.

My wick is a total mess, mostly due to an effort to put more cotton in the well. That said, this DID work for me, once. But in a little while I will attempt to replicate your style. Below are some embarrassing photos of what I just did. It leaked a TINY bit on the fill, but as of right now, it's working great despite the "it looks like a 3 year old did that" wick job. :D

edit:
and yeah, my coils are now a wreck too, but no hot spots/legs and they're working just fine.

as long as it works thats all that matters
to get the wicking looking nice...
looking at picture 2...
i take a screwdriver and put it on bottom of wick about halfway and use my finger to curl ends of wick to the bottom of tank. i want the ends of the wick closest to channels, that way there are as few bends as possible.

oh forgot...im using rayon

Here is my experience with AGA-T7:

I tried three differed builds on it.
1. Criss-Cross 28 Gauge Kanthal Micro Coils and Cotton.
2. Same thing with Flat Ribbon Kanthal.
3. And my favorite now is the one where I have one micro coil above the other micro coil and both directly above the airhole. The cotton is around the coils, not in them. I saw it built by Aesop here: How do you? Dip yer Wick!: FastTech Forums

Got mine in yesterday and have been loving it -- finally have a tank with great airflow! Flavor has been top-notch as well. Flooded it on my first fill to the point of major leakage, so re-read the tips on filling and have been leak free since.

The only issue that has been a problem is that freaking small set screw for the fill hole. Major pain in the .... dealing with that. But, while I initially was not going to get the A7 due to that since I knew just looking at it that it would be a challenge for my old hands, I'm glad I went ahead and got it -- the vape quality makes up for the stream of curses I feel compelled to utter when it's time for a refill (which is pretty quick -- this puppy drinks juice at 0.7 ohms).

why not wind your coils to end up with a higher resistance like 1.4Ω total or something, so that your juice usage is much less?

Yeah...I like the vape better at. 7 to. 8 myself on this. Tried higher resistance and it was OK but came back to. 7. The filling on this is a pain....pulling and loading a syringe is the biggest pain especially since top filling a Kayfun is such a snap. But...every tank has got its quirks...

why is everyone still using cotton anyways? - I thought it had been pretty well decided on this forum that the rayon batting called cellucotton was superior to cotton in taste, wicking, and making the coils last forever and keeping them clean.

No.. they are just the most vocal atm...
