I have one of the most important questions overlooked as of yet. What in the _ _ _ _ is somebody with COPD doing smoking. :) I could postulate that this is a way for them to get off of the cigs, or maybe they are planning on administering their drugs with a ecig. Hmmmm.

I have watched several people continue to smoke after finding out that they had emphysema, lung disease, ect. Who am I to judge them though. It is not what I wanted them to do obviously but people make their own decisions. I think this is another tool that will make vaping more attractive to people who have certain ailments and that is good in my book because I much prefer them to vape over smoke.

When does the co-op start DAn? half kidding :)

My mother was one of those people. Although she tried to just sneak cigarettes after her emphysema diagnosis at 51, we all knew that she continued to smoke. She died a horrible death the following year, and all of her four sisters (my aunts) passed away from either emphysema or lung cancer within the following ten years. Such a shame because they were all vibrant, loving, fun women, and me and my cousins (and our kids) lost so much future time with them. THIS is what tobacco does to not just a person, but to an entire family.

Dan's latest invention could have given my Mom at least a few more years.

Thanks, Dan, and keep on thinking up great stuff. We are here to support you.

Background....

I was asked by a vendor 3 years ago if there was a powered adapter of some sort that would allow someone with COPD to use an ecig. Because he had multiple customers/family trying to quit smoking, but were unsuccessful and ecigs were to hard to vape on, as they did not have the lung power to get a good hit. The problem was getting a fan small enough that was in balance to operate at the speeds I wanted. Enter shapeways... I was able to get a fan made at the size I wanted, so here we are. The vendor BTW is estatic, and cant wait to test it with one of his customers. SO I am working as fast as I can.

I would recommend looking for a motor that has through and through shaft that would allow you to install a fan at the base also for increased efficiency.

Also you might look at using a squirrel cage fan for greater pressure. Because it turns the air 90deg you would feed it with vertical slits in the side and the air would be forced up the center. The big challenge here would be sealing the air flow like proto # 3. I think this would be the most efficient design. But it will present a whole new set of complications.

I like the idea of the palm sized jet engine posted earlier. We are essential trying to make a compressor fan like jets use. We want to take larger volume static air and force it up the tiny air hole of the atty.

Dan, are you plugging the side air holes of the carto? I believe you are loosing a lot of your flow at this point.

I would also replace all the bottom holes with 4 large cutouts.

I don't know if it helps... but if the sound volume is an issue I just thought of something that might be worth trying... In the newest Macbook Pro Retina, they redesigned the cooling fan with asymmetrically placed blades. Somehow they made it still balanced, but the blades are all spaced differently, so that it changes the aerodynamics or something.

Dan, After smoking for 50 years and vaping 2.5 years I find it real hard to vape sometimes especially at night. I have been fiddling around making some airy adapters for those times. I think this Scubafan is just the ticket for that My only thought is it would be nice if it was variable speed. Being able to adjust for lung capacity and or different style atties etc.
Keep up the good works. :toast:

A VV version would require a special box or tube mod so the fine tuning of the fan speed could be done indepenently of the atty on a seperate circuit. I am first trying to get a universal version made that could be used with any atty that has a bottom air vent on any PV.
Uh Oh.... just gave me an idea LOL
A box mod with a special atty just for power vaping that has fan speed adjustment. Hmmmmm Turbo charged Hybrid?

Any updates? I'm following with interest.

Just got the new fan in from shapeways, will be working on proto2 tomorrow :)

Holy ..... This is almost exactly an idea I had recently. Even up to using the vibration motor as the motor.
Crazy.

LOL, well I have sat on this design for 3 years until I could find a place to make a 15mm balanced fan, check out Shapeways - Make & Share Your Products with 3D Printing
I highly recommend them for all your small hard to make/find parts.
