I found that twisting the single wire until it breaks is okay as you can see it folding. Sometimes from the bottom, in the middle, or at the top going down. However, twisting all three together is the tricky part.

I ordered some more wire and Peter did an excellent job of explaining the three wire twist, "stop when it starts to pull in". You and I are probably over twisting the three wires as it's kinda hard to see even at slow speed.

We'll get it right soon, even the ugly looking ones work better than any others coils.

So I guess "going till it breaks"...is me doing it wrong :(

I have plenty of wire though! I'll keep trying :D

breaking on the single wire twists? I find that if I start with individual wire no longer than 2 ft., it usually doesn't break. I pretty much just let it rip with the drill speed; but as the single strand gets to where it's almost done (3-5" left to close up), I slow down quite a bit. Mundy mentioned that it breaks if it reaches both ends and you don't stop the drill right as the last loop closes.

on the 3 strand part, I'm applying quite a bit of tension with my forceps hand. Keeping it all pretty taut. Actually pulling on it. How hard? IDK, maybe as much as it takes to hold a gallon of milk a few inches above the countertop.

Well, you see...I had one strand doubled n half - one end wrapped around my gizmo thingy then held by channel locks - the other end wrapped around an allen wrench shoved in the drill. Standing back a ways I commenced to mashing the drill button while leaning back to give tension until.....

I have since learned the error of my ways and let hubby do it.

Oh, are you doing the same thing I did when I first tried? (went through almost a whole spool before I managed to get a PM thru to Mundy) Don't fold or double the initial 3 strands. They are just simple, single strands, straight, just twisting it.

Anyone want to make me some... Wish someone would just sell it. I bought something recently that a site called clapton wire and thought I was getting something special. I just paid a bunch of money for plain old cut wires,.....

I'll send you some when I get some more wire, it is currently old out. The last one turned out pretty good so I think I just about have it right. Not over twisting the three together and keeping equal tension takes some practice.

It might be a while though, still have to wait on the wire.

Not that this makes much difference and more of a FYI. Mundy mentioned in an earlier post that the seller shuts down while on vacation and since seller is not showing any other items/wire for sale seems likely he is away.

New wrap. 3 twist about .5... Still had some knots in the wire but had a good 6" out of the 2' I twisted so getting better!

The time involved to hand make it would make it too expensive for most to want to pay for it. After I get my 3D printer and maybe have some extra time (ha!) I could look into making a machine to make it. After all, it's nothing more than 3 yarn rope with the twists carefully calculated. Something like this planetary ropewalk machine but the gearing would have to be just right to make the folds in the individual strands correct.

Lunch is over so back to the grindstone.

Yep the twisting went better this time. Used Alex's method with a twist < see what I did there > and clamped the channel locks on one end and drill on the other and stood in a chair and let it dangle and twist naturally with the tension...worked really well. Think I just went a little fast at time. Consistency is the key methinks!

I tried that method but couldn't see what the wire was doing on the first 50 ft. This time I cut 40" held one end with pliers and the other in the drill on a table. Then I could see it folding all the way to the end and usually snapped when it got the the drill end which was fine. However, when I was twisting all three I didn't stop when it started to pull in so I was knotting up. I also read that using three 12" pieces works the best. Try holding the drill and pliers with your arms in front of you then go slow with the drill.

That is very kind of you to offer. I need to get over some of my fears with vaping, and this is one of them...

I'm sure you can make one, it just takes some practice. I'll send you a piece when I get the wire as an example if I get it right this time. Even my ugly ones vape better than the 30g twisted I been using. You'll need to make sure the post holes are large enough in the atty you are going to use.

if you're doing your 3-strand reverse twist with a drill (very low speed), and tensioning the other end by hand (I hold with hemostats), you can feel the strand getting longer for a while, and then, just as it starts to pull in (to want to shorten), stop. At this point you can give just the short section you want to use for a coil a few twists with your fingers. This is just my own method, don't know if it reflects the true Platonic Geometry (but it works).

strangely, this reminds me of the sex manual my mom made me read back in the early 60's...

yep...
