I agree with above posts a boom that shook the walls would of blew the battery to pieces. So I am skeptical. If you use the cheapest thing you can find then expect no negative consequences ? Lipo bags and charging tins don't seem so dumb now hu? I will go on record saying anyone who dose not assume their batteries can vent during charging and dose not take steps to prevent any damage is just plane foolish.

Ive repaired a few of my own ego chargers. there is definitely a voltage regulation circuit on the pcb (printed circuit board) mounted in the connection end. I'm sure some companys make a dongle that can handle 4 volts, it just looks like the one in the article isn't one of them.

That "thing" she connected the battery to is just a 5 volt USB connector. There are a few - thankfully few - cigalike blister packs that actually charge the battery at 5 volts, presumably because it's cheaper to put a voltage dropping resistor in the battery case than to manufacture a proper charger. Responsible on-line vendors quit selling them, or go out of their way to state that "charger" is not to be used with any other battery than the one it came with.

If anyone missed it the full size image is here =>

I called channel 2 news in Atlanta and pointed out this to them The lady I talked to seemed interested. She said they would look in to it.

Sadly it did as designed and in a panic the woman made things worse.

A short occurred. Battery, charger or PC port first, who knows? But the plug blew out to vent the pressure away and the metal started absorbing the heat.

Grabbing anything Hot always leads to dropping it. dropping it usually leads to additional damage.

Not trying to play down a scary moment, but come on. My Microwave Blew up. Super bright Flash of electricity across the room. Loud BANG! Power went out in the kitchen.
I didn't call the media, I fixed the microwave!:)
didn't even have to be a short...left in a hot car...the battery was already HOT due to ambient temperature...then try shoving electrical current into said battery!

Lithium-ion Safety Concerns – Battery University

That is the beauty and the dangers of "new technology" it is what allowed the vaping community to even exist...batteries of such high energy density are very new which allow vaping rigs to be handheld rather than bulky (hmm...same thing happened to cell phones...big ole bag phones to ones now that fit in a pocket...)

Li Ion batteries are sealed and PRESSURIZED...what do you think would happen to say a sealed hairspray bottle that is heated..could it rupture catastrophically, or a propane tank, or a pressure cooker, or something as mundane as a ball point pen? People need to be educated on the proper handling of something...funny how when people treat a product correctly on only very rare occasions does "bad things happen"

This report is an "anomaly" vs the norm...it should be treated as such..but with our "sensationalize for ratings" media now adays...do we expect anything less?

Ego sized battery.
Details are sketchy at best. I heard this one while driving in to work today; it was reported the explosion "shook the windows".

Hmm. Heard it on morning radio. WSB link. Do you miss Boortz?

From what I heard talking to someone who claimed to know the lady interviewed (edit - the vape shop owner), it was bought at a gas station in a blister pack. I have no problem with cheap quality stuff but people need to know to be careful with junk.

A little, though I didn't listen to him all that much. I tune in for news and traffic in the morning, and occasionally the Erickson show in the evening.

Traffic and weather is why I listened to the station at first but got used to Neal. Boortz is conservative but isn't afraid to admit some conservatives are just idiots. I bet with his hatred of smoking he would have had a field day with this during the half hour local portion of his show, unfortunately.

Erickson and the other local guys on WSB are pretty good. I consider Jamie Dupree local even if he actually isn't.

BTW - The vape shop owner interviewed is the owner of the one I mentioned to you in another thread in Suwanee. She didn't sell this woman the device that went bad so this shouldn't be a reflection on the new shop, which I intend to visit eventually. If it wasn't for this situation I would still know nothing about that shop. Apparently that was the only store open yesterday so WSB went to her instead of Vape Rite which is who they called first.
