There’s been a very rapid evolution of vaping since I joined in 2013! I went from refilling tanks, to dripping for a few years, then back to tanks. It’s been increasingly difficult to get replacement hardware, so I’m going back to building coils and dripping. Does anyone still do this? I don’t want to depend on disposable vapes.

The top row in the photo are obsolete tanks I have, because the replacement coils aren’t made anymore. ‍♀️ The bottom row are my 3 old Paradigm Magma rebuildable drippers, simple 2 post/single coil builds. One is a clone, the other 2 are authentic. I did a build tonight for the first time in years, and I had forgotten how much flavor I was losing with a tank.

Plenty of folks build coils & plenty drip. Personally, i use pre-built RTA/RDA coils because i'm clumsy & not too bright. i use drippers sometimes, mostly to test new e-liquid mixes, sometimes just for the Hell of it because i like variety in my vaping experiences. Some people drip all the time.

You know that you can build your coils and use them w/o dripping, right? In an RTA or RDTA rather than in an RDA?

There are many members who've stashed a huge amount of vape gear, during the last 10 years especially. I wouldn't doubt it that there are some of us who probably have coils that would work in your tanks above. There are even quite a few coils manufactured since 2013... that are compatible with several totally different tanks. I can't tell exactly what tanks yours are though!

If you want to post which tanks they are here, I'd be happy to check my "stash" and/or do some in-depth Google searching to check for coils that'll work in them. I usually have pretty good luck finding hard-to-find vape gear and supplies.

I'm a RTA'er and I've never tried drippin' in the past decade. I fear the day that I'm not able to wrap and wick my own coil. I've thought on more than one occasion to add a pod to my vaping arsonal, but the event of pre-built coils becoming not available anymore is a sort of scary thing to me. I'm getting close to 60, and I hope to be around for another 20 or 30 years, and I defineatly hope to still be wrappin and wickin.

Dripping in many instances got replaced by squonking. Its a lot like dripping with an RDA that holds 9 ml. The advantage of squonking is being able to use an RDA which holds more, produces more vapor, and easier to wick than an RTA. People that have non-squonking mods can do it with temp control or experience though. Some still do im sure. Squonk mods are large.

I started vaping in the stone age - 2010. I've tried just about everything since then. I bought wire, cotton, a wrapping jig and you name it. I've lost track of how many mods, tanks, etc. I have.

I got tired of all the gear hassle. I got past the hobby phase of things. I've settled on a couple of Geekvape devices and tanks. I make my own juice. I buy manufactured coils that last a week or more. I have no interest in dripping again.

I'm in my 70s, started learning to wrap with help from my daughter and a Daedalus jig. She got me into the hobby by comparing making a coil to making a friendship bracelet for your lungs. I can't do anything super intricate but a simple fused Clapton is pretty much "set and forget" and I can get great taste off of them so I never really bother with staggers or staples anymore.

I’ve been here long enough to remember the squonk revolution. :)

Can you recommend a good RTA & RDTA?
i've very limited experience w/ RDTAs, none of it good. Others will be able to advise you better than i about good ones but i have heard that StemCrave's Aromamizer Supreme v.3 is excellent.

As for RTAs, OXVA's original Arbiter is tops for DL. The diameter of it's base is 26.5mm so you'll need a mod that can handle that. Another excellent, large diameter RTA is the Blaze Pro Max from ThunderCloud. It's 28mm at the base & flares to 30mm.

Smaller & single coil is HellVape's Dead Rabbit Solo. 24mm. Easy to build. Just have to get the coil position right for good flavor.

if you're an MTL vaper, the only one i use myself that's still available (i think) is the Arbiter Solo. It's a little tricky to get a good MTL vape from it, in my experience, but it can give a nice, loose MTL, which is what i like, when you get it right. The other MTL RTAs i use are long discontinued. There's a v2 Wasp Nano; i haven't used it but did have good experience w/ the original.

Other popular, well-reviewed, & available RTAs with which i've no personal experience are the Kylin 3 from VandyVape (dual coil, 25mm) & the Dead Rabbit MTL 2 (22.5mm). Also, Reload Vapor has a reputation for top-quality RTAs. Definitely worth checking out (a couple of their models are on my wish list).

You should be able to find reviews online for all of these. Others have their persoanl favorites that they can recommend.

Anything with a bf pin if you ise a squonker. It doesnt matter if you don't. For BF Dead rabbit single coil is quicker to wick. Double coil produces more vapor. For non BF I like the deep lush. Both are real cheap at wetvapes.com. They're dumping their remaining rebuildable stuff for 90% off.

A few years into my vape journey, I caught the bug regarding building and making coils. For a few years, I used to buy those tanks that, along with coils, often came with a rebuildable deck. You're right about losing some of those coils becoming no longer available (sad). I did have one tank for dripping, but I haven't used it in years.

This is the problem with coil cartridges. If they stop making the cartridges youre screwed. This is why i like wrapping coils. They CAN’T stop making wire and cotton balls available. You will always be able to use it.

So true. My state has banned mail delivery of all eliquid. Any hardware associated with vaping is required to have an adult signature, which is another charge/fee, if you can find internet vendors willing to go through the hassle.
you can still get gear, like you said it is getting harder.
