Silencers have some strange laws in different states, so make sure you know what your local laws are. In some states it is legal to own one, but illegal to use one. :confused:

As for battery life on an illuminated reticle scope, I haven't shopped a lot for them, but have noticed around a 4 hour battery life. I'd say that is a good amount of time when considering how long you would actually use it for. It could come in handy in the darkness a time or two. I know some even use the CR123 batteries that my GLV uses . . . although Mutt has almost gotten me convinced to go with the Darwin, so that removes the shared battery factor.

I think the majority of the 'legal to own, illegal to use' is more or less for a higher prosecution charge if used in the commission of a crime. You really have to be flaunting your gear to attract legal notice. Your property CAN be confiscated and charges brought against you if it has evidence of being used. You can transport silencers across state lines without filing a Form 5320.20 provided silencers are legal in the destination state but it might be a good idea to CYA if you'll be returning to a 'legal to own, illegal to use' state. You then have proof that you used it in a state 'legal to use' and have the ATF approval documents to back it up. :D Occasionally, paperwork can work to your advantage...

I'm with you on that one. I believe a great majority of laws are for that purpose. Most cities have a law against using a bb/pellet gun inside the city limits, but I doubt there would be an issue for some guy plinking cans in his back yard. Now, some kid shooting at family pets or breaking neighbors' windows would be a different story that would enact the law.

Anybody have opinions on the night-vision aspect?

Well, I think this is where the vari-volt mods could really prove their worth. Say you have a pile of batteries but they're all the wrong voltage for your night scope, dial in your vari-volt to the correct voltage and you're back in biz! As far as their effectiveness in a post-apoc world against zombies... I think they're more of a detection/verification device. Weapon mounted ones are expensive and you'd need a Gen II or better unless you want to accidentally fry it with normal daylight exposure.

Night scopes are cool but a very specialized tool, handy if you need it, but not really necessary.

Zombie Survival Guide for April 11, 2011
Topic Public Spaces; Warehouses

Given their lack of windows, easily secured entrances & spacious layouts, warehouses can be an ideal refuge for an extended period of time. They may have bathroom facilities & sources of water.
If there are heavy crates stored there, they can be used to reinforce doorways and create private rooms, or a fort type line of defense within the main area.
There is also a slim possibility that whatever goods are stored there could be helpful to your survival, therefore rank warehouses among your most attractive hideout options.

Is Costco a warehouse? If so, that could solve several problems all in one place...Once we got past all the crazy looters!

Hey lynlee, pretty nice place here huh? :thumb:

No matter how secure a warehouse might be, I don't think I could do it. I don't like that feeling when I get out too far on a surf board and know that it's just me surrounded by all sorts of critters. I could imagine the feeling with a thousand zombies banging and probing around a warehouse. I just couldn't relax unless there were no doors or openings except the roof. Even the best security measures can fail, and I probably would not be able to get past that feeling.

Exactly...Not only would you have to worry with the undead, you would have to worry about the living trying to get in as well. The risk just isnt worth it.

I am still not convinced to travel with a group yet.

While I do see the benefits of having others to help watch for and defend against danger, I also see having a group of people, as more baggage to deal with. More people equal more feelings that will get hurt, more mouths to feed, more "chiefs" and fewer "indians". More chances for someone to make fatal mistakes.

I am not saying I know all the answers, but at the moment, I feel pretty confident in my ability to survive. Adding people to the equation is something I need to address in the future, but for now, I will be a loner.

Zombie Survival Guide for April 12th

Topic Zombie Attributes; Social Dynamics
Zombies have no social organization, no hierarchy, no chain of command, do drive toward collectivization. They are simply a mass of individuals drawn by instinct. They appear to be unaware of each other, and have never been observed to react to the sight of one another.

Zombie Survival Guide April 13, 2011. Topic; Recorded Attacks;

Here is a summary of a letter written by a French businessman Jean Beart Lacoutour;

In a game called "Devil Dance," a living human is placed in a cage with a zombie. The human has only an 8 cm blade. Bets are taken for these games. Stables apparently were kept of these fetid gladiators, most of which are turned victims of a failed match.
At some point Lacoutour's body arrived back in France with a bullet in the head & badly decomposed.

What a cute lil' story for a Humpday morning!:p

Zombie Survival Guide for April 14th

Topic is; attributes of Voodoo type zombies;
They know fire. They are not usually afraid of it but will recoil once they find out it causes pain. They may stop to examine it, but don't seem to remember what it is.

Since today's guide topic is a bit dry, I thought I'd give you these tips from the Worst Case Scenario book on How to foil a UFO abduction. Stay safe my friends!
1) Don't panic, as the EBE (extraterrestrial biological entity) may be able to sense fear.
2) Control your thoughts. Try not to think of violence, .... probes or abduction as these mental images may encourage them to take you.
3) Resist verbally. TELL the EBE to leave you alone.
4) Resist mentally. Picture yourself in a safe place.
5) Resist physically. Go for the eyes.
