Love my Ares rta and just started trying rayon wicking in all my attys. The Ares MTL was not wicking well, too slow, I had set it up the same way as I did with cotin threads. I rewicked with rayon and made sure the juice channel was not packed, thinned out the tails carefully, and trimmed to underside of the deck, so far it's wicking well.
I wonder whether rayon can choke the juice flow easier then cotton if packed too tight?

With Rayon I have to twist the wick to get it through the coil. It does shrink and compact when wet with juice, so it needs to be really snug in the coil when it's first installed. Once it's heated and juiced up it begins to compact and shrink a little. You have to vape for a few minutes to break in a new wick and get it to the sweet spot.

Cotton expands when it's wet, just the opposite of rayon. Rayon fibers compact.

Yes you can very easily choke off juice flow with Rayon if it's packed in the wells too tight. I thin, fluff and trim the tails so they just sit in the juice wells, fill out the space in the well but don't pack it in.

Keep in mind that Rayon is NOT cotton, it doesn't work the same and you don't wick with it the same way you would cotton. This is where most first time users of Rayon fail as they try and wick it like cotton.

Squeaky tight in the coil and 50% or more of the tails thinned out. It's different for every atty as to the amount of of tail thinning and that is a trial and error thing, but tightness in the coil is a must.

Too loose in the coil can give dry hit results as well, it's not from lack of juice but the Rayon is actually pulling away from contact with the coil wraps. I use a thumbnail against the coil edge and pull the wick through, this is coil deformation tight and works perfectly in all my RTAs.
