I'm not ricks but for a beginner, keep it simple. Kanthal 28g, 8 wraps (coils) and cotton balls (organic from a drug store).

There's a bunch of how-to videos on youtube for the kayfun 3.1, KFL+, KFv4, etc that are all pretty much similar to a KM3 build. Most of the techniques apply since the build deck is similar across all of them. Just search for "kayfun build".

This is a good site to figure out what your coil should be reading when it's on your atomizer and mod:

Thank you for your response, KTMRider. Greatly appreciated - I'm trying to glean as much info as I can - so far it seems most people are advising me to keep it simple, like you, so that is what I'm going to do. There seems to be so many variables which makes it confusing. For the most part, I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing and that it is safe.

Once you have a build or two under your belt, it gets much easier.

As far as being safe, the only thing you have to watch out for is burning the wick while vaping and you'll definitely know. All you need to do is re-wick with the same coil and you're good to go. I've re-wicked the same coil over 10 times so building a new coil isn't necessary most of the time. It only takes me about 5-10 mins to rewick my atomizers. I use ni200 so I can't dry burn but I scrape off the build up (gunk) with my tweezers and run it under really hot water to clean it before putting a new wick on it.

What PG/VG liquid do you use? For me, I use 30g kanthal wire and wrap a 2.5mm coil evenly spaced. I think most people like their coils tight but I find I get more flavor with spread out coils. Try both ways to decide for yourself.

Don't be afraid to ask questions here. We are all friendly and don't judge.

Is nickel harder to wrap than Kanthal?

Thank you Ricks - I use 50/50 at 18 mgs - I just bought some bottles of 12 mg as I'm trying to get down to 6 mg. I'm a MTL vaper and have various batteries including Provari mini, iStick/eLeaf 40w, CoolFire IV, eGo One and just ordered a Pico. I'm obviously a little out of control right now!! The tanks I use are Triton mini and Nautilus mini - I'm so looking forward to receiving my KM3.

Is there a big difference between regular cotton and Ko Gen do?

I am trying to buy Kanthal wire - these are the options:

Wire Specs:

  • 20AWG (15ft Spool)
  • 22AWG (15ft Spool)
  • 24AWG (30ft Spool)
  • 26 AWG - 0.275 Ohms/in and 0.4mm Diameter (30ft Spool)
  • 28 AWG- 0.448 Ohms/in, 0.3mm Diameter (30ft Spool)
  • 30 AWG- 0.588 Ohms/in, 0.25mm Diameter (30ft Spool)
  • 32 AWG- 1.143 Ohms/in, 0.2mm Diameter (30ft Spool)
  • 34 AWG- 1.905 Ohms/in, 0.16mm Diameter (30ft Spool)

I thought I would get 28g but it says ".448 ohms". I'm confused - does the wire dictate ohms or does how many coil turns dictate ohms? Being that I have a lot of 18 mg and 12 mg juice, I think I need to be at over 1.0 ohms. Can someone help/explain? Thank you!!

Yes. It's much softer and is therefore much easier to pull it out of shape. If you want to try to coil for temperature control, stainless steel is IMO easier to deal with.

However, I concur with KTMrider - it's probably best to start with Kanthal.

[Addendum: Only if your mod supports TC in SS mode, though.]

Get the 28 gauge, be able to do higher ohm coils with it, 30 is to thin IMO, makes it harder to work with.

I'm using 26 gauge, but doing 8/9 wraps to get 1.2-1.3 ohm coil.

Ohms is a function of the length and thickness of the Kanthal wire used. See this calculator for more information:

Just my personal experience re going down in nicotine concentration. I went from 12 to 6 mg a few months ago.

I found it difficult trying to switch between concentrations. It was easier for me to just use up all of my 12 mg liquid first, then use only 6 mg thereafter. I was sucking on my mod a lot more for awhile (no jokes plz), but it got better over time.

    YMMV, of course.

If the drop is too difficult to handle, you could go to 15 mg for awhile by mixing 18 mg and 12 mg liquids in a 50/50 volume ratio.

How am I supposed to know how many wraps with 28g kanthal? That's the confusing part. Sorry for all the questions

    It depends. :)

Use this calculator when/if in doubt. It will help you understand the basic concepts of coil building.

    Coil wrapping

Anyway, for starters, I recommend 28 or (my personal favorite) 29g Kanthal A1 for Kayfuns. I like 2.5mm coils, but 2.25mm coils are nice too. I prefer higher res coils in my Kayfuns--1.4-1.6Ω or so.

Also, I highly recommend you watch some coil building and wicking tutorials--it really helps. Phil Busardo has some great videos on YouTube. I use Kuro coiler, but you can make a simple coil on a drill bit or a screwdriver, too. Qorax has probably the best Kayfum mini V3 instructional video--actually, he has several... :)

    Good luck and welcome!
