Yeah, a Kuro Coil or Coil Master jig is a very nice tool. Not necessary, but it IS nice.

I used drill bits for a long time but recently got a Coil Master. Now I kind of wish I had gotten one sooner. (That's what I get for not listening to Katya...)

Congratulations!

Welcome @lauragal ... I would get both 28 and 30 to see what works best for you.

over 2 years ago, I made my first kayfun coil ... 7 wraps of 30ga on the little blue screwdriver.

I still make the exact same coils for my ProVari/Kayfuns.

It depends. :)

Use this calculator when/if in doubt. It will help you understand the basic concepts of coil building.

Coil wrapping

Anyway, for starters, I recommend 28 or (my personal favorite) 29g Kanthal A1 for Kayfuns. I like 2.5mm coils, but 2.25mm coils are nice too. I prefer higher res coils in my Kayfuns--1.4-1.6Ω or so.

Also, I highly recommend you watch some coil building and wicking tutorials--it really helps. Phil Busardo has some great videos on YouTube. I use Kuro coiler, but you can make a simple coil on a drill bit or a screwdriver, too. Qorax has probably the best Kayfum mini V3 instructional video--actually, he has several... :)

Good luck and welcome!
Yes, I've been watching youtube videos regarding coil building. I just bought 28g Kanthal - I have no idea if it's 2.5mm - it didn't give that in the description. I also bought a coiler kit so I'll have the tools I need. The coil wrapping link if a little confusing for me because I'm not sure of all the variables to put in all the boxes. When I tried what I thought was correct, it said I would need 15 coil wraps.....??

Just my personal experience re going down in nicotine concentration. I went from 12 to 6 mg a few months ago.

I found it difficult trying to switch between concentrations. It was easier for me to just use up all of my 12 mg liquid first, then use only 6 mg thereafter. I was sucking on my mod a lot more for awhile (no jokes plz), but it got better over time.

YMMV, of course.

If the drop is too difficult to handle, you could go to 15 mg for awhile by mixing 18 mg and 12 mg liquids in a 50/50 volume ratio.

I've been vaping exclusively for 4 years now - started at 12 mg then went up to 18 - been on that for several years. I know going down to 12 is going to be difficult, but that's partly why I bought the Kayfun - hoping I can build coils and still get good TH with 12 mgs. We'll see....

Very much so. And he's kwite kareless about it--not much trimmin or kuttin. He just folds, lifts and tucks in. Works fine for him. Or so he says.

Honestly, I experimented with rayon a while ago and just used it as I would cotton, just packed it tighter, as it collapses when wet, while cotton expands. That's all I know on the subject.

The Kats come out at night. :) Howdy, doll!

Howdy, you, Katya yah! I wonder if Quorax could do anything for excess midriff body parts... fold lift tuck. ;)

Yes @Katdarling that is the purple one, got her the pink too, but she likes the purple better, as the pink is really light in color.

I nearly ordered the black, but did look really dark, so went for smoked instead.

@Nailz .. How's the color on the glass?
2 that I got were terrible, especially the dark black.

Nailz, I think the purp will do me just fine, too. Yes, the pink is a bit light but could work. (I didn't order it.)

I think we all agree that the "dark" black is just completely or nearly opaque and not liquid visibility friendly. I LOVE the look, but was equally frustrated at not seeing the liquid level.

LMAO at in ( )

Me too!

Bingo !! Problem solved. No more dry hits. It was either a faulty o-ring, or the tails were too thin. Still puzzled though, why would a thin tail prevent juice from entering the chamber .... And you are right, cotton does taste better.

Thanks everyone for helping.

Perhaps your tails were so thin that they were not conducting the liquid to the rest of the wick?

Just enjoy it a bit first..:)

This. TOTALLY!

What PG/VG liquid do you use? For me, I use 30g kanthal wire and wrap a 2.5mm coil evenly spaced. I think most people like their coils tight but I find I get more flavor with spread out coils. Try both ways to decide for yourself.

Don't be afraid to ask questions here. We are all friendly and don't judge.

Okie dokie, I have a question then. With your described wick, how many wraps for what ohmage?

Which is precisely what I'm doing now, and I don't feel any diff between my former 18s and my current 15s. The gradual step down seems to work kwite well for most people.

Heh. I'm probably the only vaper with only one little blue screwdriver.

I do believe I may be the only vaperette without even ONE little blue screwdriver. Oh woe is me.

Welcome, lauragal. I'm a rookie at all this stuff too! But I've learned OODLES from this (and other) thread(s), and by watching a whole lot of vids.

The "2.5mm" refers to the size of the inner diameter of the coil that you make. I'm guessing with your coil making kit, you have options for various sizes, no?

I wouldn't get toooooooooooo stuck on the numbers at first. KISS, dahling. Make a simple coil and see how it goes. There's more help here than one can imagine as you get more into this. :)

We hold hands, too.

Thank you Katdarling - I'm confident that I will make this work! Thank you for clarifying the 2.5mm question - got it! Yes, the kit comes with several diameters - just ordered it tonight - should have it in a few days.

You're halfway there. :)

Like my friend Kat explained above, coil diameter (AKA coil I.D.) is the internal diameter of your coil. IOW, if you wrap your coil around a 2mm screwdriver or drill bit, the ID of your coils is 2mm.

The resistance of your wire (NOT the coil) depends on the thickness of the wire; the lower the gauge (and the thicker the wire), the lower the resistance per inch or per cm of that wire. Low resistance (thicker wires) require more power (heat, wattage) to come to the vaporizing temperature. That's why high wattage vapers use thick wires, low resistance builds and a lot of wattage. Those builds also require a lot of airflow and other things to function properly. Let's forget them for now.

Your Kayfun is made for higher resistance (thinner wire) coils. Start with 29 and/or 28 g coils and shoot for 1.4-1.6Ω. Then you have to decide whether you want to build open or contact coils. ;)

Do not torch your wire--just wash it with soap and water and dry. Or use alcohol to clean the impurities left over after the manufacturing process. The advice (still often given) to torch the wire before building is old and wrong. Disregard.

It's really hard to explain the whole process and all the possibilities, and the physics in one post, which is why I recommend watching videos and reading tutorials. Yes, there is a learning curve involved, but you'll get it. It probably won't happen on your first build, but it will happen.

Is there a big difference between regular cotton and Ko Gen do?

Ease of use, I think. Japanese Organic Cotton (JOC) pads, not just KGD, but also Shiseido, Labo, etc., come in neat little squares that are easy to measure and cut evenly and all the fibers are running in the same direction, which makes wicking more efficient. But most of us started with regular (organic) cotton balls from a drugstore, after we experimented with silica rope, hemp, Eco wool, and Nextel--if memory serves.

Some people swear by rayon (cellucotton). Start with JOC--it's very user friendly. Hard to mess up.

Is nickel harder to wrap than Kanthal?
Nickel is soft so it's harder to build with. When I started, I bought 30g and 28g. I think I only used a few feet of the 30g 100' spool.

Howdy, you, Katya yah! I wonder if Quorax could do anything for excess midriff body parts... fold lift tuck. ;)

I've been using rayon for over a year now. It does have a strange taste for the first few puffs some times but not bad enough for me to not use it.

I keep trying--there's something about that flavor. I swear that I can taste it. Maybe I should try harder?
