The more I read across the forum here - the more fascinating it is that people have their unique ways & preferences for doing things - and it's amazing how these little changes seem to make a difference for their vaping experience, too. My head is spinning a little bit!

SLvapor - is this what you're talking about "steam engine coil maker"?

Steam Engine | free vaping calculators

What does ID stand for? Is that the size of the mandril?

Internal diameter. Yes. :)

Should I get a little DIY kit from Fasttech as well?

Not sure what it is... Sorry.

I use this coiler (I have the 2mm and the 2.5mm ones).

Tobeco Kuro Coil Jig

Wow! Never used this one.

I buy from Temco:

Kanthal Wire 29 Gauge RW0169 - 50 FT 0.25oz Series A-1 Resistance AWG

I am a mouth to lung type of vaper and use a fairly restrictive airflow. Over the last couple of years, I have tried a bunch of coil / power combinations. I vape my own DIY juice which is 60% VG / 40% PG and 15mg Nic.

This is what I have pretty much settled on for attys such as the Kayfun and Lemo 2 (with single coil builds):

8 wraps of standard Kanthal A1 - 27 gauge wire around a 7/64" (2.8mm) drill bit makes for a 1.3 ohm coil (contact / non-spaced).

I feed this 1.3 ohm single coil 13.0 watts of power ... which provides a very comfortable Heat Flux of 125 mW/mm² on the coil.

Although one of my mods has Temp Control, I am not interested in using it at all.

Same here - mouth to lung, tight airflow - definitely. I think I'm more of a PG person than VG, so I'll be looking into the DIY juice thing once I get some kind of learning curve going.

I too like around 13-15 watts - not interested in sub ohm or TC right now at least. Kayfuns/clones seem the way to go for ease/simplicity.

So - anywhere from 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 gauge kanthal and anywhere from 2.25 to 2.8mm ID - just depends on how it goes...that seems to be what I'm hearing.

Now for wicking - I guess I'll do the org japanese cotton first and learn the nuances of it all as I go.

Y'all are really wonderful & helpful. Thank you. :thumb:

Before TP, I was very happy with 1.4-1.6Ω micro coils at 11-12w. Since getting DNA40's and now a bunch of DNA200's, I only use TP. I've settled on .10Ω spaced coils at 25w, 450°F. If you're doing TP/TC, spaced coils are more reliable. My current settings are about equal to my kanthal settings as far as vape quality but no nasty burnt hits when I space out and forget to fill the tank. Wicks seem to last a bit longer too with less gunking.

I just built 2 more DNA200's tonight.

Wow, ok - you built those mods with the DNA 200 chip?

Impressive!

Noted your comments on TC/TP. Are you mouth to lunger?

The enclosures were from a co-op here. I had a couple of DNA200 boards from a previous co-op. Just a bit of soldering and screwing to get them together :D.

Yes, I'm a MTL vaper but I do have some drippers and a Lemo 2 that I lung hit sometimes.

Very nice work - they're regulated mods, right - since they have the mobos/chips?

Interesting - what do you like about them? - like, what is the difference in the vaping experience between spaced & touching coil styles? And then there's the whole horizontal/vertical thing, too, huh?

I can go much longer between wick changes and coil cleaning w/ spaced coils. For me it's not so much a difference in the vape as it is how long they stay useable.

A 50/50 mix of VG/PG with only 5% Cherry flavoring should not gunk up everything fast.

But supplying a 1.6 ohm / Kanthal 28 gauge single coil with only 7.5 watts may be the cause of your gunked-up coil ... I am not a high wattage vaper myself, but 7.5 watts is just too cold of vape and may be contributing to your problem.

Your wife would be happier with about 10.5 watts to the coil, and your coil and wick won't gunk up as fast.

I promise you that 10.5 watts will NOT be a hot vape at all. Not at all.

I just set up my sister with my old Cloupor Mini and a KFL+ with a 1.6Ω kanthal micro coil and set the mod at 11w.

I still love my Cloupor Mini...
I got into TP so I stopped using it after about a month. It was almost brand new.

My sister knew I was a vaper and she smokes occasionally (a pack a week?) but she found it harder to quit than she thought so she asked me about vaping. I've moved to TP mods only (DNA40 and DNA200) with KF4's so I gave her my unused mod and atomizer and she's really happy with it. She wanted it to be as simple as possible. She's a smart girl so I'm sure she'll figure it all out with a little help from me. I gave her a zip loc baggie filled with rayon (lifetime supply  ), some 28g kanthal and a 30ml bottle of juice. Now that I know she likes it and wants to continue, I'm giving her some more stuff (a Tobeco KF4) and sent links to videos on youtube.

    Somewhere between here and there
I like the cloupor mini plus too. I won one here on ecf and bought a second one. I've been running them in temp control mode with nickel coils and they seem to work well. They are the only temp control mods I have so don't have anything to compare them to.
