I tried the Blue Foam but couldn't get past the taste. Yesterday I went to PetSmart and found some open-weave Fluval. I think the problem I was having with the Blue Foam was the density and the Fluval is much more of an open weave. I used the Straw mod by Kristen and the Silly Monkey Cartmod by MicBang (his video is easy to follow).

The first one I made had some leakage after using it awhile so I increased the size of the plug. Now it seems to be working great. I don't get the same chemical taste as I did with BF and so far no leakage.

This is my second day and so far it's my favorite cart mod. My straw was too big to fit in my 510 cart so I just cut it down the side and it adjusts to the size perfectly.

Here's what I bought for under $6. Fluval Filters, 2-pack, 204/205, 304/305. Art. #A-222

I am now using the fluval as the plug with the straw in the cart.

I always thought that the scotch brite pad with straw cart mod worked pretty well but I could never get past the taste of the pad.

Using fluval solves the taste problem. The straw provides the support required for the plug.

For now my goto cart mod is the straw mod by Kristin using fluval as the plug.

For folks that do not already have or have limited access to Fluval and the Mairneland U. I have some that I'd be happy to share. I can put a good size piece of each in an envelope for those that would like to try this method. I'll never use it all. Just PM me an address and I'll send out (free).

GoodDog, No inquiries!. I was just trying to help. In my town neither of these are available, need to drive about 100 miles to a pet store. I thought, well, I have too much, maybe someone could use some. Glad to mail to you, no charge, just don't need this much. I'm happy with the 808 carts.

I have more than I'll ever need of the Fluval and the Blue Foam. Just couldn't handle the taste of the BF. For years I lived far from major stores (wish I still did!) so your thoughtfulness was infectious. ;)

I really, really like the Fluval on top of a drinking straw (at bridge level with holes poked in it.) Is that how you do it?

Why do we need to poke holes into the straw?

I find that this mod works just fine without the holes. I have also determined that if you fill your cart and let it rest inserted into the atty for a good 30 minutes or more without using it ... watch the heck out! Major and consistent flavour, throat hit, vp, etc, etc. With this cart mod I don't see any reason for a pv battery mod however the eGo is on my wish list for longer battery life between recharges.

Call me a sensitive orchid type person if you must, but I find that rinsing the Fluval FIRST is a Must. I have tried generic tea bags and the Lipton Pyramid Teabag and just could not get it right. Burnt taste and wasted liquid. To me, Fluval water polishing pads rock, even whilst dripping. Just read the box. It says to rinse thoroughy before use! Rock on Fluval. Rock on fellow vapors.

GoodDog, I only had one requst, funny. I sent it out. If anyone else needs some I still have extra. I'm happy with the cartz so I'm not doing the BFM.

Oh I didn't see this thread - Iwas looking on the cart mod forums and posted there
I just started using fluval too - tho one cart I think i packed it in too tight lol. But so far its working better than polyfill, better wicking/better juice holding. At first I thought the holes are too large (I have fluval foam) but once squished into the carts it is dense enough so that seems to be ok.
Wased mine in soap n water then rinsed for ages n air dried it - not getting any weird tastes off it so I presume that worked.
Cut mine slightly bigger than cart (I have 510) and then packed in using toothpick. Maybe next time I will use a bit less foam, as shoving hte toothpick down the side to help fill was hard work.
I did try PTB mod and straws but none worked well for me - even the ZFM cos I can't cut right for..well..my cutting skills suck so that didn't work either.

I don't know if this will help, but I tried cutting a deep V in the top of the Blue Foam. That way when I poke it in all I have to do is poke down the center of the V and it closes as it goes down the cart. It's much easier to get it to the bottom of the cart this way. Haven't tried it with the Fluval yet.

Will the Fluval work with a m702 (m40x) cartridge as well? I am new to this so bear with me. Thanks

I have m40x carts, these type of filling materials work in them too. Although in this thread there are at least two different types of Fluval products being discussed and somewhat confused with one another.

1) Fluval Foam Filter Pads, a white foam, similar to the marine land blue foam, although reportedly doesn't have a nasty chemical taste to it.
Aquatic products

2) Fluval Water Polishing Pads - a white polyester material, similar to polyfil
Aquatic products

Fluval is a brand name. There are a variety of products under that banner.

I haven't tried any of the Fluval products, but I have tried the marine land blue foam (rite size U stuff). It works in the m40x carts, but it did have a nasty taste to it. I was finally able to get rid of the taste by boiling the foam for several minutes. Somewhere in this thread, somebody mentioned that the Fluval FOAM product didn't have the nasty taste.

Here's a video demonstrating how to stuff a cart with the Polishing Pad product.

thanks so much for that! i also tried the scotchbrite, but HATED the taste, must be my new tastebuds being extra sensitive, because a lot of people use it, and either i did something wrong, or they dont mind the taste. I couldnt stand it for more that 2 puffs, but the wicking was definately there. thanks for posting a picture of exactly what you bought, because there are so many different products out there with "foam" or "pad" in the title, i was getting really cornfused. I am going to attempt one final cart mod, with this fluval stuff. thanks for the post w/the pic. cheers!
