Just got my first mod with replaceable batteries (Voopoo drag.) I bought myself 4 Samsung 25 r batteries. They do not get warm when charging, I charged them on the lowest setting on an external charger. After firing the mod for a little while I popped the back off to see if the batteries were getting warm, since the tank was (smok tfv8) they weren't warm, but had a strange smell. It wasn't anything powerful, since I could only smell them with the cover off. It's kind of metallic, pretty sure I've smelled this on other batteries as well. Should I be concerned? For now I have removed the batteries and put them all in containers. If there was a vape shop near me I would take the batteries to them and ask for help, but unfortunately I live in a small town and this isn't an option - they took almost a week just to get here. For reference, I am using a 0.15 ohm coil and vaping at 80 watts. The batteries seem fine other than this smell, they aren't damage, don't get hot, and seem to charge, hold their charge, and do everything they need to. It would really suck to have to order new batteries, so hopefully this is normal and nothing of concern.. sorry for the long post, thanks for the help.

Have you tried a different set of batteries to confirm it’s not the mod that is giving off the odor?

You’re saying he vented his batteries?
No not vent in that sense, but I know the smell he described. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was until one day I got fed up and went thru the entire room top to bottom with my nose..lol I found it was coming from a couple of the batteries that I had taken off charge. I threw them in a sealed container opened the window for a hour or so to air the room and took the container out to my truck opened it up inside my truck and whammo right in the face was that smell.
If its the same metallic dryish kinda acid smell I had goin on man its not fun. !

The weird thing is they don't smell off the charger or while being charged, just in the mod.. Maybe it is the mod? The batteries themselves though do smell for a whole after I take them out but maybe just because they were in that environment. The mod does smell after taking the batteries out, but I just assumed the reverse was true and the batteries were making the mod smell. Are these batteries safe to use?

Yes, I have two sets of 25r's and both sets do this.

Sounding more and more like it’s the mod.
Can you use the batteries in a different mod? A friend’s? At a shop?

If they don’t smell at the same power level in another mod then we know it’s your mod and not the batteries causing the odor.

Unfortunately I don't live close to any shops, nor do I have a friend who vapes or another mod.. If its just the mod making the smell (As I'm starting to believe as well.) is it alright to use the batteries? I mean as long as they dont get hot it should be fine right?

Edit: I just smelled the inside of the mods battery compartment, there hasn't been a battery in there in quite some time and it does still have the smell - I guess it must be the mod afterall, sorry to waste your time @Mooch but thank you for all the help. I'm assuming since it is the mod, it should be fine?

Ok. This is going to sound weird, but I would take a dry paper towel and twist it into the chambers on the mod where the battery goes to try and clean it out. Wondering if there is some kind of 'something' left over from manufacturing the mod. It just might be what the plastic that its made of, dunno, but I would make sure that there isn't anything in there that should not be.
Then I would try the batteries again. Keep an eye on it for a while. Maybe you just need to break it in. LOL

    :)

I'll try this. The door also has the same smell, I'm guessing it might just be the metal? Smells weird as hell though. For reference, it's made out of zinc alloy.

Could be machine oil? I just have never heard of this before in a mod, but I guess anything is possible.

I'm starting to think it's just the metal and not the batteries, but even still it's quite strange.. I never figured metal would just have such a noticeable odor like this? I wish we could get someone else in here with a voopoo drag to see if theirs is the same hahaha

Well, ECF is a big place, there probably a thread about that mod somewhere. I will see if I can find something.

I am find mostly good things and no complaints. Doesn't mean there aren't any, could be my searching sucks. lol

    Sry

No need to apologize I really appreciate if haha. It's not really a complaint nor a big deal, just freaking out a newbie. I did a lot of research on 18650's before buying them to make sure I was going to handle them properly, saw a lot about being wary of smells so I must have just been over thinking it

At least you took the responsible route. Believe me, before I put any battery(mod, eGo, 510) that close to my face, I researched the heck out of it. And that was over 7 years ago and there wasn't much info out there then. So I completely understand.

I'm still not 100% confident in it but I'll do a little more research and just keep a super close eye on it
