The "it comes in flavors" argument is the weakest one of all. I don't know where this hogwash even came from. I can understand being worried about candy colored packaging and using cartoon characters to hawk cigarettes, but FLAVORS?? Last time I checked, flavors appealed to everyone, adult and child alike. Everything we eat has flavors. Companies flavor everything. It has exactly 0 to do with marketing to children.

So asinine. I mean, what are companies supposed to do? make their products taste like a dog fart so that they'll appeal to adults? Everyone knows that only children like pleasant flavors.

Amen, brother.

ok burr just said that according to the bill testing can't be done on anythign tobacco related unless it is fda approved. so in other words can't do trials on anythign unless it is approved by fda and the only way to get approved is if there are trials...wow that mean nothing new will come into effect accordign to them. and he is also saying more people are reading the bill now that it is being talked about so much.

this may be a good step he talked about snus, and e-cigs as well.

who is Burr addresing? i really dont see anyone there...

That's how the Senate and House work. Members are all back at their offices working. They or their staffs will be monitoring the speeches of members on the floor but they won't actually attend unless they intend to speak themselves.

They are probably hanging out in some tobacco friendly pub smoking watching the proceeding on tv.. lol

Seriously, he has made so many logical points to explain the reason for adding an substitute that it makes one wonder why no one would change their votes.

Should anyone be allowed to vote on this bill if they do not attend this address?

which totally is a load of crap that no one is listening but us and the ones arguing for it wont even take the time to listen to all the points of everyone. dont they get paid extra to be there? my tax dollars at work a meeting no one wants to go to...

Let's go over this again: the fact that there are only a few members on the Senate floor doesn't mean that "no one is listening." They have these new fangled things called TVs that show CSPAN. Senators and their staff use these high tech devices to watch moving pictures and sounds transmitted live from the Senate floor. They engage in this activity while they're in their offices doing actual work.

Seriously, though... it's important to understand how the Senate and House work before you go around slamming them because of how it looks on CSPAN. If every Senator was required to sit in the Senate chamber every minute the body was in session nothing would ever get done.

In Iceland, in 2001 when the display ban came into effect, smoking prevalence among adolescents rose by 3.1 per cent. During 2002, the first year after the display ban, adolescent smoking prevalence was the highest it had been for five years.

This bill is going to pass because Richard Burr is making too much sense. Congress can't deal with that.

T

Actually, Burr is hurting his case by arguing against the base bill altogether. He'd sway more votes if he characterized his amendment as a compromise/clarification rather than a substitute. He's casting it in a more partisan way than he has to. When he sticks to rational facts his case sounds more attractive, but he keeps slipping into language that's partisan and accusatory.

Someone doesn't have much of a sense of humor today.

Sorry if I offended you. I was exaggerating in the first paragraph. That's why I said "seriously, though" in the second. I thought that was obvious.

My point was simple and straight forward. The Senate is always empty looking because Senators have jobs that require them to be in their offices working. That doesn't mean that they're not listening to the floor debate. Saying that "no one is listening but us" isn't an opinion, it's a misstatement of facts.

sorry for the pissy mood this whole thing just irritates me. when you see no one there and he just said 6.5 hours worth of him talking about this alone. i just hope the right someone is listening and actually hears the truth in what he is saying. yes a tad long winded but he brings up good points.
