My girlfriend moved in appx. 1 year ago. She brought with her a 5 year old Persian Cat. I have four dogs that 2 stay in crates, while the other two stay outside in a fenced in backyard.

I crate the inside dogs because I do not want my home to be damaged(carpet, furniture etc). They stay in the kitchen when not being crated and are trained not to come into the other living areas.

I agreed to allow her cat to have free roam of the rest of the home, which It is the first pet to ever have this courtesy.

The cat has pee'd or pooped at least ten times in the home(NOT in littter box)

It is not a biological issue, it is a behavioral issue that keeps getting worse.

My question to you fellow vapes and vapettes;) is THIS- Get rid of the cat or allow him to continuously soil the rugs?? :(

Please be honest and consider the circumstances/rules that were set to my dogs before the cat arrived.

Thanks in advance!!

I had that problem with mine for a while, we had 2 cats, 1 litter box.. I got 2 litter boxes and they were happy. Maybe the cat is unhappy with the placement of the box? with the size of it? IDK I would be P.O.ed because that ish STINKS!! it like does NOT go away! GL.. I have a hard time getting rid of pets, so IDK what I would do if I couldn't have got my 2 to stop...

Well I Googled your cat problem and there's a lot of info out there. I just chose this one article because it has a few suggestions Cats ...... Or Pooping Outside The Litter Box - 4 Steps To Stopping The Behavior but I think it depends on how much you want to work with the cat. OR suggest that your girlfriend work on training the cat with whatever method you want to try since you've already extended this courtesy to her and her cat. Also if you don't already do so, consider crating the cat in a crate big enough to accommodate a litter box when unsupervised?

I wonder if the cat simply has a problem with the litter box? Maybe it's picky about the litter? Or doesn't like the box itself? I am not aware of pooping like spraying or marking territory. With my own cats they get picky if the box isn't immaculate. They did the same when we bought a covered box. Any change just seemed to tick them off and they seemed to make an effort to let us know.

I can certainly identify with your frustration and hope you are able to find peace soon.

Ive had similar problems with some cats, male or female, fixed or not. If the cat is attached to your girlfriend then it is a territorial thing and is acting out against your intrusion on what it(the cat) feels belongs to it. The territorial behavior could be directed towards the dogs as well.
All that said I think your best option would be to consult a vet and try their advise first.

P.S. Clean the affected area then try mixing vinegar and water 50/50 in a spray bottle and spray the soiled/smelly areas and blot with a cloth after letting the solution sit a few min. should help neutralize the cat urine smell.

Give up on animals and buy fish.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Sounds like the carpet & etc. is more valuable than animal companionship.
I have an elkhound on the couch, an american eskimo chewing up rawhide on the floor next to me, a cat on the roll top desk and another on the bed. So I'm kind of coming from a different perspective here.

Still, cat piss is nasty stuff. That stench is destinctive.

the question should be did the cat pee anyware before it came to your house? if so then you've got a problem if not there an other issue to matter.
Is it a male cat ? and did he got his balls done?
Hi Carol!

He is a neutered persian and yes he had the same issues at her parents house that kept the cat while she was in college!!

The cat had the same issues at her parents house, there was a Chihuahua there. Apparently Persian cats are known for tis type behavioral issue:(

May I ask you 2 questions?

1. Do you dislike cats? and
2. Why do you keep dogs at all if you keep them 'crated' or locked outside?
1. I do not hate cats, only cats that piss on my bed and where my feet touch!

2. This is not a crate vs non crate issue, so, please leave this out. My personal choice and actually I am a professional dog trainer.
