Somewhere out there
What I did is add up how much I spent on cigarettes for a year, that is my vaping allowance, so I am still under that amount. Now if I add up how much I have spent on analogs in my lifetime, well I really don't want to know that- YIKES! But I figure if I spend $10,000 on ecigs I am still way under what I spent on smokes all those years. So just enjoy! LOL bnrk

I too am in search of the perfect Kretek flavor!
I've heard good things about the Tasty Vapor Kretek... but haven't ordered it yet.
I heard that Clove Essence (can't remember vendor) is good, but more on par with Djarum lights and isn't strongly flavored but more complex than plain clove.

When I first started reading this I was confused how you were still smoking Blacks since they were banned... then I saw the "shipping" comment. On that subject I have a friend who buys them and has them shipped and they just don't taste the same as the ones available here before the ban. I know this because I have some pre-bad Djarum Supers still (though only a few packs). Right before the ban I had my local guy order me two cases and I vacuum sealed them and put them in a chest freezer. I shared some with friends at first, but now when people see me out with a real clove and try to bum one they are soundly rebuffed. LOL
I smoke them sparingly and once the last few packs are gone there will be no more analogs in my life, ever.
Also my friend who orders them recently got a formal letter about one of his orders from some federal agency telling him that his package had been confiscated. He was worrying that they would be knocking on his door, but they haven't. =(

Anyway... I'll be testing the Kretek flavors that I sample against the real deal so hopefully I will be able to report back at some point that I have found a good match.
And maybe if I do find one I can get my friend to swap over to vaping too!

***Edited to add- since you smoked the Black Menthols it's possible to get a regular Menthol juice and bump a Kretek juice with some to get that cool sensation like your former preference. At least, I know that people do this with other flavors... it would be worth a try if you want to simulate your old favorite. =)

Definitely cheaper for me too. I use pretty basic PVs most of the time (eGo/Riva 510s)...I designed and scratch built a vv box mod just to see if I could do it. Maybe $4.00 in materials but to be fair, I design electronic stuff for a living and had most everything laying around. I also used to be a machinist in my younger days and still have access to the equipment. Although the mod works great, It does look like I'm sucking on an Ipod with a short, black straw so I only use it around the house.

I also DIY all my e-liquids. When I used to use nicotine liquid, it was maybe in the $1.50 -2.00 per 30 mL range. Don't use nic liquid anymore so cost dropped like a stone for the last 4 month period. Haven't calculated it at all but it is ridiculously cheap even with FA and TPA flavorings. Total cost of vaping to date is probably around $350. Most of that expense came in the first three months.

I never felt the need to buy a lot of extra hardware but I do have adequate backups for everything. According to my tell-tale here, I've saved about $958 over smoking thus far. I expect to spend maybe an additional 30 dollars thru the end of the year for Cartos and restocking some flavoring etc.

Well I dont know I spent up till now 1,5 week of vaping

72€ for a genuine joye 510-t starter kit, 1 30ml joyetech jouce, 1 30ml mint from DK, MLB Virginia 10ml from HeavenGifts, 1 low resistance atomizer, 5 black tanks
16€ for 4-5 1 30ml mint from DK, 4 other 10 ml botlles from DK, 5 tanks with a flat tip

If i calculate what i spend a month on smoking it's at least 5,5 euro a day, so at least 165 euro, make it i would say aroudn 200 euro a month in total. I will save about half a month and that is only due to the initial setup cost

But planning in ordering a pcc and extra battery, some more atomizers. But still then i saved quite alot and it should keep me going for quite a while

So i save around 100-150 euro a month, add that up during a year, it's quite a nice amount. Also vaping tastes alot better, and it's healthier ... So this is really a no brainer for me

I think it depends on your buying habits. For me so far its been cheaper.
I had my ego from a previous attempt (didn't bother chasing flavors that time, a mistake I've corrected this go around)
I used to smoke a pack of newport 100 a day at ~$6.50 a pack. I just spent $65 dollars on juice and atties and I figure that will last a minimun of two month. I have a smoke free counter on my android tablet and it tells me since I smoked my last analog I've saved the price of the juice and shipping. Once it ticks around to the price of the whole order I'm going to get myself a mod. After that upkeep should only be ~20% of what I spent on cancer sticks

if you where an average to heavy smoker(the OP probably wasn't they smoked cloves) you where paying anywhere from 5-12 or more a day to smoke if you do math for a year worth of smoking you going to save money even if you bought a darwin, a provari a reo grand a reo mini a gg and a hand full of other mods you would still save money over a years time unless you only smoked a pack or 2 cigarettes a week.

I am at the point that I can begin saving a lot versus analogs.

I own a PV that I'm perfectly happy with. IPro with 5 sets of batteries. 4 eGo battteries that are now back ups, and 6 510mega's the wife uses when she is not using one of the eGo's. The only other mod that I may buy is a NotCigs EvvO when it comes out.

After trying about every atty/carto there is, I've settled on the Vision Deluxe 2.5ml carto. I estimate I'll use 2 per month for the both of us.

My DIY "lab" is fully equipped and stocked. There is 500ml of 100mg nic juice in the freezer. I mix at 20 mg so I can make 2.5 liters of juice with what I have on hand.

We were spending roughly $500 on Marlboro's.

I doubt that I'll spend more $100 a month going forward with both of us chain vaping.

This is a really informative post! I haven't started vaping yet. I can see how mixing your own can really save money. I am spending $8.50 a pack on cigarettes, so I am sure I will save money.
Sandy

Yes you will, it depends on how far into the vaping experience you want to go. You will save money if you just want a ego and some juice. When it becomes a hobby then......lol....it changes but your helping yourself from not smoking so its a good thing.

in previous attempts to completely quit analogues I did manage to save money. On this excursion I imagine I will be holding myself to the break even point by shear force, searching for the things that will keep me off for good. Since I was a three pack a day smoker of premium in state with rather high sin tax, it does give me quite a bit of leeway. But my shriveled black cheap heart does cringe a bit. I know though, once I find some stand bys it should get better. Well after I get a variable volt anyways.

Good luck to you OP, we just have to hang in there.

I've been using the same stock Riva510 for nearly a year now. (Ok, I basically purchased the starter kit and 2 extra batteries for a total of 4 batteries). Total cost from E-Liquid and Electronic Cigarette Shop - Category Listings was $40. I have not replaced any of those Riva batteries, although at a years worth of use, that purchase will be coming soon. In addition, I prefer the cartridge + atomizer set up. My carts for the year cost about $10. I purchase atomizers in bulk from Liberty Flights and have spent about $100 this year. My total hardware expenditure for one year has been about $150 for the whole year, give or take a few bucks. I vape about 1.5 ml per day, which through a cart is a pretty decent amount IMO.

What has cost me a pretty penny has been the search for the perfect e-liquid. I set my budget for that at $50 per month, but the last couple of months I've just stuck to my stock of Boba's Bounty from Alien Visions E-Juice.

Over all, I have saved thousands this year, and I didn't have to do a single mod or mix any of my own liquids to do it. I know some people really dig the hobby aspect of it all, but I just wanted to stop smoking.

I used the money I saved to fund some fun things I'd wanted to do for awhile. All in all, it's worked out fine. I wouldn't say vaping hasn't had its hiccups, because it has, but if you've got your mind set, this is a great way to get off the cancer sticks.

Good luck with your journey. :)

So I've gone off the djarums and onto ecigs (eGo-T) full time. I think I've spent three times as much! And I go through a lot more liquid, a lot more smoking now that I do it in the house constantly. Keeps me from eating though, and I suppose that's good.

Seriously though, how/when does this get cheaper?

You bought a lot of hardware to get started. Most of that is going to last awhile. Your join date shows that you joined ECF this month. Do you expect to buy a new kit every month? Of course not.

How fast you recoup the initial costs will vary. It depends a lot on how much you were paying for cigs, and how much you smoked. For instance, I was smoking 3 packs a day. That makes it a lot easier for me to justify, and recover, my up front costs compared to someone who smokes a 1/2 pack a day.

In theory, I could buy a very nice mode every month, plus juice and misc supplies, and still be spending less than I was spending on cigs.

Also, if you look long term, the health benefits have to be factored in. How much is it worth to not miss work from being sick? How much will you save in long term health care if you aren't smoking?

The best part is that almost everyone agrees that vaping tastes better than smoking. The hard part is giving up those last cigs. Lots of people on this board still smoke a few a day and take solace in the fact that they have given up the other 30 or more that they used to smoke.

If ecigs can take away most of your tobacco habit, it can eventually tear you loose from the last few a day that you are hanging on to. Some people take a year or more to give up the after meal cigs and the couple with coffee, but they finally do it. Others drop cigs like hot potatoes and never look back.
