So the mail ran today, surprisingly. I got my pencils and am playing with them now. It's really fun. I'll see if I can take a picture of my vase I sketched. Its not that bad I think, but we'll see if i can 1 up myself later on down the road.

Are you going to show us?

Edit: Oops! You did show us. I jumped the gun. Show us your next project, too.

That's what I was thinking, 0mg. Florida weather reports, while bad for Floridians, sound like springtime to me.....I'm thinking of giving up the catering. I've toyed with the idea before, but I just keep doing it. I'm afraid if I quit, then I'll regret it. So I procrastinate. I think the difficult parking is the one thing that makes me really dislike the work. Also, it's physically very hard, and it's demanding, yet the pay is just a tad above minimum wage.
I just finished putting more plastic and tape over my windows. -15 now.

I accepted a sub assignment during break. Sort of hesitate to, because when I am deep into writing, anything else is just not worth thinking about. LOL. Not a good frame of mind to bring into substitute teaching. But I really do need more contact with people, and the money is good. No school again tomorrow, but I think I will report myself available, and keep notes on where I am with writing and what needs to be done, so I can pick it back up more quickly.

Thirsty-- I think I will make myself some tea-- herbal, LOL.

Today, I went to the dentist -- just routine cleaning. After that, I went over to the restaurant to tutor the kids. Their mom wanted to change it to tomorrow, but I have to work then. So the plan was to take the boy to the library. The little girl was at the dentist, too. But just as we were leaving the restaurant to walk over to the library, their father brought the girl back to the restaurant. She had cavities in 9 teeth! Her mom wants me to do something to get her to brush her teeth, so I promised the kids more reading on personal hygiene, like the cover-your-mouth lesson. I need to look up something simple on the Internet and make it simple enough that the girl can read it.

Meanwhile, the kids chose books to read from the library. I started with the boy, and he chose a book on astronauts and what they do up in a space shuttle. It was a perfect choice. Just hard enough that he didn't know some of the words, but easy enough that he could read it with help with those words. Lots of photos of astronauts doing their jobs. I also gave him some spelling words, and there were a few he had trouble with before that he still is getting wrong, so those and some of the words from the book were his homework.

Meanwhile, the girl had chosen some board books. I told her to read silently while I worked with her brother, and then to list any words she didn't know in the books. She dutifully did this, and we went over them after I finished with the boy. Then she read one called "Baby Animals," and she did pretty well. I gave her homework of the words she didn't know in that book, minus names of complicated animals like orangutan. Yes, I told her the names when she was reading and had her repeat them, but I feel it's more important for her to know a word like "fur" than "aardvark."

Then we walked back to the restaurant. It was fun to be in the library for a change, and I think the kids liked it, too.
Wednesday, I'll ask their mom if they can choose which place they want their lessons. The library even had a private small room with a table and chairs that we could use so we didn't disturb others with our talking. I hadn't been in the big library in Ithaca before -- I always go to my local one -- and it sure is a fancy place.

Now, off to search for dental hygiene into for a small child to read!

Well, I have been residing under the evil will of Winter Storm Ion. Don't know exactly how much snow we got but it measured 12" before I went to bed. And, the wind was blowing it off the deck, so that may not have been accurate. It's incredibly cold now, so the snow, which was very heavy and wet, turned into concrete.

Kinda fun to watch. The birds were going crazy stocking up on food to weather the storm. The trees were completely encrusted until the winds started causing vertical avalanches that started at the tops of the trees and knocked down tons of snow on their descent. The pics don't do it justice because you can't judge the depth of the snow on the trees. It was impressive.

Waiting in the chow line

Doesn't look like it, but this is the top of a big tree with a foot of snow on the larger limbs.

Wow, Rave. Just...wow!

It is still snowing here, not as heavy now though. Our forecast shows it could snow for the next 4 days, 20-30% chance. That's hopefully all for now, we don't have anywhere to put it! The lake effect is coming all the way across Michigan, but it usually comes in 'streamers', maybe it will miss us. Looking at the weather map, it looks like the lake effect will hit your neighborhood too, Rave.

Do you have a generator? Losing power in these temps, it's just dangerous.

Oh man - that sounds brutal!!

Nope - no generator. Just a wood-burning fireplace and a warm spirit.

CRS is can't remember syndrome-- very popular ailment in the old folks' threads. :2cool:

    Like that one . . . :D

AND - Even better the - Can't Remember :censored: . . .;)

Uncle, I just remembered-- I am expecting an order from slowtech, and another source for my writing project from Amazon, so I may just have wait a while. What perks would I get if I were to claim refugee status?

Don't know what "Perks" that "You" might be interested in - but there are a lot of Northern "Refugees" already here that might be able to help you find out what they are too . . . I only know the ones for those on Disability and some "Senior" ones . . . However, If I were "You" I would wait a little while longer before coming down . . . SEE BELOW . . .

    Just Sayin' . . ;)

Nice for a first doodle! :)

    SO Ditto ^ ^ ^ ^

Hmmm - If such is the case, then I haven't yet earned the right to use the phrase. ;)

Well - I know "You" have earn the right to use what I normally say . . . :)

It was a "Moment Of Age" - I'm Not Old Enough to Have ANY "Senior Moments" Yet . . .

    AND - Although, AARP say I was a Senior at 50 - I haven't reached 60 yet . . . I gotta a few months left to "LIVE" My 60th year . . . Oh - But I will always take a Senior Discount when available . . . Just Sayin' . . .;)

Okay NOW - I find this very interesting, I have in the wall air conditioning units that I usually have set on 60 or 65 degrees all day . . Today they have been set at 60 degrees w/ the Fan continuingly running to keep the air flowing and clean (also all the other fans {6} are on too) . . .

Well - I just noticed a little while ago that they both kicked in and are now putting out - HEAT ! ! !

    So - I guess the . . . COLD! ! ! . . . has finally hit South Florida . . . ;-)

That's "cold" huh? It's -12 here. Probably MUCH colder for 0mg and Q. I feel for ya, Uncle!!

The young folks here just cleaned 12" or more off of my Jeepers to take out the garbage. YAY! I don't have to clean it off!!! Celebrating%20Throwing%20Stars.gif I wouldn't worry about it at all, but I know that FedEx and UPS won't have the courage to come into the woods under the current conditions, and I'm expecting packages. I'll have to drive out to retrieve them. The kids say that Jeepers can handle the driveway if I gun it.

One thing that worries me a bit: On Friday through Monday it will reach the low 40's with an abundance of rain on all four days. This will fall on my county road (which hasn't been plowed yet according to the kids) making it an ice rink - AND - the creek will flood big time! Interesting times ahead!

It is -13 here. However, I fooled around with my heater last night, and set it on"eco" mode. That didn't keep up with the cold (60deg), so now, on "hi" it is going to take a long time to catch up, since it was running constantly yesterday. I think I will add some steam heat. That will catch it up. :glug::vapor:

    Sitting down, facing forward.
It was 60.8 when I got up yesterday at 6AM. By noon we had sleet and snow at 1PM. It dropped all afternoon and was down to 28 at about 9PM. This morning it was a "crisp" 4 at 5:30 and now we're up to a balmy 10. The wind has been howling all night and again this morning. We lost power at about midnight last night for about a half hour then again this morning at about 5:30, but that only lasted about ten minutes. I've got 20 gallons of spare gas and a full tank in the generator, just in case, and three spare 20lb propane tanks for the "auxiliary" heater. It's about 70 in her now so the "auxiliary" is still doing the job without any oil being used.

Good to know that you're well prepared, Awsum. But then, I wouldn't expect any less from you. That dramatic temperature drop with this storm is a bear, isn't it?! :glare:

Temp is up to 68, but it is about to rain in here. My book is waiting at the PO, I should have gone back.

    Outside, it is -7.

Northern Nevada, astride the "49er trail
Good morning peeps - Looks like you guys back East are getting hammered by the weather. That is one cold cold front.

Your pics of the birds and the trees with snow on them were incredible, Raven.

Love those winter photos from you as well, SandySu.

19 overnight here and now up to 36 degrees although I don't think it will get too much warmer today. Threatening us with snow and or rain. I wish - probably won't happen.

Since the weather is calm and I didn't have to put on too many layers of clothing, I got the horses out one at a time and into the round pen. They needed to run off some steam. Little Wiseguy was bucking and kicking. so cute. Nevada ran and ran around the pen and then decided to calm down a little. I have been able to lead him using the stud chain and I think it is good for him to get out of his pen to get some running time. And for us to try to work together. They both got some carrots while standing next to each other by Nevada's pen.

Both of them eventually got worked and we are learning to go different speeds. Wiseguy is doing so good. Nevada is definitely improving.

I think I have a lead on a trainer, which I would love to get some driving lessons. I have to make a phone call later today.

We're still in the 40's during the day and 30's at night and it's rainy like crazy. I can't complain too much with all of you suffering the extreme cold and snow.

Well, my drawing of the animal is a complete disaster. I knew it had problems so I ran it by Rave and she confirmed that there were too many problems to redo it so I got an idea how to save it and am running the idea past Rave. The animal was a wolf. I should have known better. I'm going to finish the drawing because there are other things in it that I haven't tried yet but I'll have to do something different about the wolf. If it turns out half way decent I'll post it, otherwise I won't embarrass myself and just chalk it up to a learning experience.

It's so cool to see a horse running a bucking. It means he feels good and is having a good time. :)

I went to work yesterday morning in a short sleeve shirt. Worked half day and came home in 3 shirts and a hoodie. Went out this morning in all the above and a lined flannel coat looking like I weighed 10 more pounds. Strange thing is by the weekend we'll be back in the 80s like it never happened and wuzz nothing more than a bad dream.
