Girl.... get a FOID card, take some classes and get some protection. You will feel ALOT better.I keep my doors locked for sure, and I have a dog, but she's so old and little, she wouldn't be able to do anything but bite a toe...poor thing is just about deaf too.I think because we now have the second car and one is always here, I'm fairly safe....whoever did this knew the house was empty, I don't think they want any confrontation. Still, I'm scared.

Go to Lowes and get some magnetic reed switches to mount on your windows; and then got to the local sign shop and get some decals made up to look like alarm co. stickers. Cops say this will keep out most thieves. You can even get one of those little audible alarm boxes for fairly cheap. Mount these on the front and back door, and if the thieves call your bluff on the stickers the alarm will send them running.

they actually have those at the dollar store lol (the alarms, I mean!) Great for kids sneaking into the pantry for a snack

I've been spoiled living in a very small community for the last 13 yrs so we don't have much crime in the neighborhood. Our town is one of those where if you're talking to someone about the lady at the bank... that person is probably related to her so you don't want to say the wrong thing.
my brother in law calls at 2 today to invite himself to spend the weekend.. and he's bringing his girlfriend (whom I loathe) and my two year old nephew and getting here at like 2am (nah, don't worry, you will wake up the girls, sure, it's fine!).. nothing like last second! they will be gone just in time to entertain my mother 
so I will be here off and on.. thinking I need a face mask mod with a juice tank full of high nic! lol and these guys are smokers, too.. take your nasty habit out in the heat! it's so nice to not have to do that anymore!

Dang B! I'm sorry to hear that....scary stuff, some good advice given already. I know with kids and all guns are of concern to parents.....I use extra care, but I have one if needed, with the alarm and dogs......let's just say I have no problem sleeping at night. Just glad to hear she's ok as well as poochie. boB
