I don't really know how much a pack of premium cigarettes cost down here. I haven't checked since I quit smoking, going on six months ago. But, at that time they were around $7.00 a pack.

What will government do for their revenue after a really significant number of smokers are priced out? They will have killed (or severely crippled) the goose at that point. I suppose they'll then go after new sin taxes. What will they pick for their next target?

Toilet paper. They will tax it by the square.

Or, knowing the nanny state mentality that seems to be all the rage these days, they will mandate which way to wipe. Do it wrong, and you're fined $500. But that's ok, they money will go into a general fund to help educate people about the proper usage of toilet paper and the evils of incorrect wiping.

Will they call it the Sheryl Crow tax?

(Except that the money never got into the fund to educate people. It was "borrowed" to wipe up after the state's excess spending.)

Thats easy. All citizens will report to a medical facility for installation of a gauge that measures air intake. You will be taxed per liter of air you breathe. All the real cheap people will be turnig blue from trying to hold their breath .

First they came for the alcoholics
I did not speak up for I was not an alcoholic.

Then they came for the gun owners.
I did not speak up because I owned no guns.

Then they came for the pot heads.
I did not speak up for I didn't imbibe the herb.

Then they came for the fatties.
I did not speak up for I was healthy and lithe.

Then they came for the smokers.
and there was no one left to speak up.

GASPING - a play by Ben Elton (1990)

Synopsis:
A satire on big business, the media and product exploitation. Designer air proves to be the marketing phenomenon of the decade, but as demand outstrips supply, Lockheart Industries plunders the Third World for resources. The world is starting to gasp, and only the biggest suckers survive.

;)
(I went to see it in the West End, it was awesome)

The control freaks/zealots/"perfect ones" have already made their intentions known - they are going after obesity and the campaign has been on for some time now and continues. They have the medias' ear and they are gaining momentum. Look for excessive taxes on "high caloric" items -soda, sweets/candy/pastries, etc. they will get psuedo-scientists to determine "safe limits" of certain foods and beverages and eventually people will be "monitored" at the check-out line and taxed accordingly. They are already going after fast food companies and have stripped schools of "high caloric" items. For anyone who has an interest in collecting things, buy yourself a candy machine because in the not too distant fututre it will be an illegal drug delivery device-and a collectors item. There is NO END to control behavior left unchecked; it is pathological and destructive, especially when fueled by fear, self-righteous indignation and Money.

New York is still working on the "Soda Tax" and the Fast Food Tax. Same logic. Raise taxes so they can't afford to buy it anymore.

Interesting piece on Showtimes "Penn&Teller Bulls it" about it this week.
