Blackberries produce fruit on second year wood. After that the old vine is nothing but a drain on water and nutrients. All the vines that grow after harvest are next years producing vines. Trim everything that had fruit on it off leave all the new stuff.

Thanks. I guess I should do this as soon as they stop producing so I can remember which is which. This time I just cut all the living main stalks off at about 3 feet and the lower branches off at about 1 foot from the main stalk. I should know next time, but I'll probably ask you again next year.

That's cool. I wait till all the leave have fallen to prune. You can tell the ones that had fruit on them by the heads of the branch where the berries were. Its real easy just a royal PIA Also about every third year I let close runners live and cut out old main stalks to keep the vines fresh.

Reminds me of the missionary in Africa that was called into the chiefs hut. The chief motioned him over to a window overlooking the play yard amont all the kids was one that looked a whole lot like the missionary. The chief asked him to explain himself. He thought for a moment and walked the chief over to a window on the other side of the hut over looking the tribes sheep. Among all the white sheep were two or three black ones. The missionary asked if the chief could explain it. The chief thought for a few minutes and said "I won't tell if you don't"
