Thanks all who have contributed to this thread. I made some cold macerations of cameroon and black toasted cavendish. They are delicious. A little bit gunky but taste is great. I don't believe I'll be buying ejuice any time soon. Thanks again all!

Yes, macerated tobacco extracts contain organic cellular material that will gunk coils. Obviously, filtering makes a difference in how fast and how much, but crusted coils and gunked wicks are part of the game with macerated NETs. Most of us here feel that the taste and satisfaction of macerated NETs provide ample compensation for that shortcoming.

Buying retail juices is mostly long gone for me. The only retail NETs I've purchased since beginning simple-soak macerated tobacco home extractions more than a year and a half ago are previous retail favorites that I like having around---GoodeJuice Vita Bella and GJ4, and QuickNic ouR whY qu4tro---plus the occasional non-tobacco dessert juice that pleases me, but only if I can't duplicate it myself with DIY, and even then I wait until a good sale rolls around.

Between home-extracted NETs and general DIY, my juice-buying days are very few and far between.

I just go with gravity filtering through a 3 micron filter paper. All you have to do is pour and walk away for a couple of hours. 400ml would probably take nearly two days and a couple of filters.

Learned something new about 2 micron filtration. I keep my tobacco macerations (and perform most of my extraction activities), in a sun room that is not as temperature controlled as the rest of the house. For the past few days the nighttime temperatures in my neck of the woods have dropped below freezing and the daylight hours have been brisk as well. I began filtering 5 new tobacco macerations last Wednesday and all went well until I setup for the final 2 micron step. Around 8pm Wednesday night I loaded 100ml of "Voodoo Queen" into my 2 micron filtering assembly and when I checked it at 9am on Thursday morning very little had filtered through. When I checked it again at 6pm it appeared nothing else had passed through at all. Realizing the ambient temperature was quite cool I decided to apply vacuum to expedite the process. Even after 30 minutes of vacuum, very little additional solvent passed through the filter. Thinking that perhaps the filter was loaded/clogged I installed a new one and again applied vacuum. Progress was slow even after 15-20 minutes of constant vacuum very little solvent had processed through so I decided to move my filtering operation to a heated part of the house and let everything warm up. 30 minutes later, with the solvent and filtering equipment at around 75F, I could see a slow drip coming from the filter assembly. When I applied vacuum the remaining 70-80 ml of solvent filtered through the 2 micron paper in about 7 minutes. Lesson learned.

Im taking notes str8 , do you just have a hand pump vacuum setup or a whole rig?

I don't like hand pumps, requires too much constant attention/fiddling to maintain a constant uniform vacuum. While I do have a big HVAC unit it's far too loud to use indoors so I bought this to play with; http://www.amazon.com/Karlsson-Robo...F8&qid=1414907130&sr=8-6&keywords=vacuum+pump No bigger than a pack of cigarettes it pulls around 18"-20" of mercury and does so surprisingly fast given its size. Now that I know it suits my needs I'll fabricate a housing/enclosure for it.

I second that question. What else did you need to buy to get it hooked up and purring?

Has anyone attempted an avtual "cold maceration" , leaving the mash in the freezer the entire time? Maybe weekly thawing?

Ummm, freezer? Why would one do that?

I think that freezer idea was discussed here, first post:
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...extract-full-strong-buzz-moderate-flavor.html

100% PGA as solvent and 6 hours in the freezer for maximum alkaloid content and minimum non-alkaloid content (minimum gunk and flavor?) It would be an interesting experiment. Heavy reading thread, I got to page 9 and bailed out, I know I've read it before, not sure how much of it though. This afternoon I bought another bottle of PGA for $60 because my wife finished off the last one  could have bought 2 isticks or another DNA40 board, when will I learn to stop  I will try the freezer method for a week to see how clean and flavorless we can do a -5 degrees C cold maceration, just for experimentation purposes. Its quite possible I will be surprised, not sure which way its going to go though  5 gm of tobacco should be sufficient, I think I still have about that much Full Virginia Flake left, my fave.

On another note, johni sent me some 2.5 micron filters a few months ago, I finally got around to completing a rough unscientific test. The result is that yes the coils last longer and I cannot detect any flavor loss. As far as I can tell, around 25 to 50% longer coil life than using cotton. Also the 2.5 micron filters are an easy one step process, and with the cotton, I would wash it for fear of getting a cotton taste, and then lose a small amount of extraction forcing the water out of the cotton, and the cotton clogs up pretty quick and gets harder and harder to force through the syringe. So, a thumbs up for the gravity-fed 2.5 micron paper filters :) and thanks johni, much appreciated.

Can you use a 12V converter or do you need a transformer? !/4" tubing?

I used a 2 amp 12vdc Wall Adapter Power Supply I had on hand and wired an automotive toggle switch in-line for an on-off switch. Technically the power supply is a "converter" as it converts 120v ac to 12v dc. Ultimately, I will search my shop and storage for a 2 amp 24vdc power supply and couple it with this; http://www.amazon.com/RioRand-trade...UTF8&qid=1414944598&sr=1-19&keywords=rheostat to control the level of vacuum. The hose barbs on the pump fit 1/4" tubing and I used this; http://www.amazon.com/Watts-SVGE10-..._indust_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1P1NBR7EWC0Y3X092PTM seems to work fine and it was cheap. The pump is noisier than I would like but once I mount it in an insulated enclosure/housing it should quiet it down to a hum.
