Very good blog, and nicely referenced. Thanks for sharing.
Only thing I disagreed with was that nicotine is very addictive. Its much less addictive than smoking. That nicotine is the main/only addictive chemical in
tobacco smoking has been disproven in science and is a misnomer.
What seems to contribute most with smoking addiction, is the _combination_ of harmala alkaloids (combustion products, for example harman) with nicotine, according to animal addictive studies. Nicotine alone by comparison, elicts very little addictive compulsion in animal studies.
So the whole "trading one addiction for another" should be responded to with "yes, but trading a much stronger addiction, for a much weaker one, according to science and experience".
I would compare nicotine only with caffiene, and vapers with heavy coffee drinkers, whereas I would compare statistically, and in terms of strength of addiction, smokers with coke addicts (not the drink).
I don't think moral objectors to addiction have a leg to stand on here, even if we ignored the lack of high rates of disease and death involved.
It's just sad the folk wisdom has equated nicotine, with smoking addiction, when in reality its a minor component of the overall chemistry of smoking addiction. And thats something we need to address, I feel, this popular misconception.
Its also important we agknowledge, I feel, conversely, as this person has, that nicotine does still have some minor harms, for the sake of balance, honesty and disclosure.
