We know of all the major and minor constituents in the ingredients of the e-cig cartridge and vapor. TruthAboutEcigs.com contains summations and links to differing studies of tests done on the electronic cigarette. In not one of these tests were carcinogens or toxins found at any levels harmful to humans

once rational people read just the science facts of the electronic cigarette and the actual success it is having in getting people off of tobacco cigarettes they will understand how fabulous indeed this new technology is to the health and well-being of the current users of the e-cig and the potential it has for the millions of Americans who cannot quit tobacco cigarettes.

The medical director of the Smoking Cessation Clinic at the Montreal Chest Institute and other doctor's recently called it a moral duty for Canada to provide e-cigarettes to smokers as a form of harm reduction.

Harm reduction in smoking can be achieved by providing smokers with safer sources of nicotine that are acceptable, and effective cigarette substitutes.

There is a moral and ethical duty to provide these products to addicted smokers.

Electronic cigarettes are such a substitute.

First, they cannot even remotely be as toxic as regular cigarettes because there is simply no combustion of tobacco which produces the smoke containing, for example, the carbon monoxide and the bronchopulmonary irritants that are among the 7,000 chemical substances responsible for causing cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive lung diseases and at least 10 different cancers.

Secondly, sales data show that these products are widely accepted by smokers. In fact, there has never been a product that has generated so much enthusiasm on their part. Such interest is not surprising since electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine much quicker than existing nicotine-replacement therapies and provide a similar behavioural experience as smoking.

E-liquid contains only a few ingredients. PG based liquids contain mostly propylene glycol, which produces the vapor emitted by the electronic cigarette and it is the carrier of the nicotine, another ingredient in E-liquid (if you choose a liquid with nicotine). Propylene glycol is considered generally safe for human consumption by the FDA, and is an ingredient in many food items that we eat. It is also found in shampoos, soaps, and medicines. (There is an interesting article about propylene glycol listed below.) E-liquid also contains water and artificial flavorings. In rare cases, allergies to PG have been reported, so E-liquids are also sold that do not contain it. They use vegetable glycerin, or VG, which is a plant based substance. VG is used in many products that moisturize and clean the skin and is made from coconut or palm oil. In rare instances, people report allergies to PG and may use VG based E-liquid as an alternative.

E-liquid also contains some natural extracts from tobacco in small amounts and natural flavorings.

A 2010 single blind randomized repeated measures cross-over trial of 40 smokers gave people (1) tobocco e-cigs, (2) placebo e-cigs, (3) nicotine inhalers, or (4) cigarettes on each of four days, three days apart, after a night of abstinence. They measured desire to smoke. The tobacco e-cigs reduced desire to smoke over the placebo, and were more well tolerated than the inhalers.
