Dr. Richard Carmona, former U.S. Surgeon General under President Bush from 2002 to 2006, has joined njoy to advance smoking harm reduction. Dr. Carmona is a vocal opponent to smoking and second hand smoke and has worked hard to clear the air to improve the health of Americans.

He views electronic cigarettes as a viable harm reduction strategy but plans to work internally at njoy as their biggest critic to move the technology forward.

The funny thing about water vapor is that it…. vaporizes. Which means that it dissipates into thin air quite rapidly. Yes there are barely readable amounts of random elements that do get released when you exhale but unlike cigarette smoke that lingers around long enough for other people to catch it, water vapor dissipates extremely fast. Independent studies have been conducted which shows that the amount of trace nicotine that’s exhaled from an e-cigarette is completely non-existent.

MYTH : E-cigarette products with nicotine are illegal in Canada.

FACT : There is no law stating that e-cigarette products with or without nicotine are illegal in Canada. These products are legal, regulated, consumer alternatives to smoking – and are legally sold, bought, owned and used as such in Canada.

Glycolized air is not toxic in rats and monkeys even when at the atmospheric saturation point is reached.

With a view to determining the safety of employing the vapors of propylene glycol and triethylene glycol in atmospheres inhabited by human beings, monkeys and rats were exposed continuously to high concentrations of these vapors for periods of 12 to 18 months. Equal numbers of control animals were maintained under physically similar conditions. Long term tests of the effects on ingesting triethylene glycol were also carried out. The doses administered represented 50 to 700 times the amount of glycol the animal could absorb by breathing air saturated with the glycol. . .

The results of these experiments in conjunction with the absence of any observed ill effects in patients exposed to both triethylene glycol and propylene glycol vapors for months at a time, provide assurance that air containing these vapors in amounts up to the saturation point is completely harmless.

TESTS FOR THE CHRONIC TOXICITY OF PROPYLEXE GLYCOL AND TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL ON MONKEYS AND RATS BY VAPOR INHALATION AND ORAL ADMINISTRATION

Although many e-cigarettes are designed to look like regular cigarettes, both Tindle and Strauss said they don't exactly replicate the smoking experience, particularly when it comes to the nicotine delivery. Most of the nicotine in e-cigarettes gets into the bloodstream through the soft tissue of your cheeks (buccal mucosa) instead of through your lungs, like it does with a tobacco cigarette.

MYTH : Flavours in e-cigarettes are unnecessary.

FACT : Flavours play a key role in discouraging e-cigarette users from returning to smoking – because users quickly realize that, comparatively, cigarette smoke tastes disgusting. Hence the wide variety of appealing flavours available in e-cigarettes is a very good thing. Without flavours, switching from smoking to using e-cigarettes would be much less appealing – and many current users fear they would return to smoking if flavours were prohibited.

Flavours in e-cigarettes are a deterrent to smoking – not a gateway to it.

MYTH : E-cigarettes must be bad, since many anti-smoking groups oppose them.

FACT : The tobacco control industry (and it is an industry) has over the years become a very lucrative gravy train, well-funded by big pharma. If vast numbers of Canadian smokers switch to electronic cigarettes and no longer smoke, anti-smoking groups will soon have no further reason to exist. They are no more eager than Health Canada is to see smokers voluntarily switch in droves to an attractive, non-lethal consumer alternative to smoking.

Anti-smoking groups that oppose e-cigarettes do so due to their own financial self-interests, rather than legitimate health concerns.
