Detailed mechanical mod information

Hello all,
I am ready for a mechanical mod. Can someone point me to a tutorial about how they work please? Google really hasn't given me the info I'm looking for.

I have good knowledge of battery safety.
Understand Ohm's and Watt's laws.

Am I just over thinking what a mod is? Put an RTA/rda on, and fire?

I see that there is the Kick and Kick2, so there is the potential for a "regulated mod"??

Send me some pointers/links please.
