I'd like to see more testing done by a reputable company for diacetyl and other ingredients to determine their safety. We just don't have good quality testing done by outside labs to work with. Most of us are guinea pigs for a new technology.

I tend to stay away from anything that even suggests a buttery flavor, but I had no idea that fruity flavors might contain things we don't want in our lungs. I wont microwave popcorn without the range hood (next to the microwave) cranked up to high speed. I don't want the aroma of MW popcorn in my lungs, for sure.

same here. ive been that way ever since i saw the news story a few years ago about the man who was addicted to the smell of buttery microwave popcorn. he would take the bag out of the microwave and immediately begin inhaling the vapors. he woudl stick his face IN THE BAG. he would do it multiple times per day. they called the condition he came down with Popcorn Lung. its used in the popcorn factory as a way of describing what happens to the workers there. 0_o !!!

Washvap, Thanks for starting this thread. Much needed info here. Looking into DIY myself. And another thank you to Fernand for all your advice and info. Try to do my due diligence in all aspects of vaping. Want to know exactly what I'm doing, especially when it comes to safety. Thanks again!

Your welcome and it's great to hear that you have found this thread helpful. I'm just glad that this thread still exists and can help spread the information. Really thankful to the people (like Fernand) that have participated and contributed all the information here.

Have all the same concerns as you have with vaping. I'm still learning with every passing day on this forum. I JUST started DIY so that I know exactly what's going into my juice. I found this section incredibly helpful. A lot of great people here that are willing to help at all times:

DIY E-Liquid

Also, these are the calculators that I use for mixing. Mostly use the "Adjusting PG/VG" calculator but, there are many choices to choose from:

DIY E-Liquid (E-Juice) Mixing Station!

Is V4L's juice free of these nasty chemicals?

Thanks,

Chris

Honestly have never tried V4L's juices. The two ingredients to watch out for the most would include butter and vanilla custard. A lot of dessert type flavors have these ingredients. It's the reason why I tend to avoid those types.

Thanks. There are a lot of people who use variants of the "anything is better than smoking" argument and then stop reasoning. I don't even believe THAT. Smoking only kills a percentage of smokers, and there are toxicities that can be worse. It's safest not inhale anything. But if we love vaping, it makes sense to look for the safest vape that we can enjoy.

I sure feel much better with no PG in my juice, and I can't see any reason to use it. It was in the first Chinese juices but i find that most people are pleasantly surprised if they give VG-only a fair try. It only takes a few drops of water and alcohol per 10 ml to thin, and temp takes care of the rest.

The flavoring picture is that there are thousands of compounds used in flavoring that the industry considers potentially toxic by inhalation. Diacetyl and related diketones were a general wake-up warning, as well as a specific flavor type to avoid. If we can't vape unflavored, fine, but it doesn't make sense to demand extreme candy counter flavoring levels. With diacetyl, for instance, the damage to animals is fatal at 300 ppm, but not even noticeable at 1/5 that level. It's a powerful argument against the "what the heck it's all better than smoking" line. Flavoring at 5% and 25% do not present the same level of risk. It's common sense to keep flavoring to a minimum.

Nicotine does not appear to be the demon toxin it's often made out to be. In some ways it's even looking beneficial. But there are potential breakdown products of nicotine that are dangerous, like nitrosamines. So, again, if 8 Mg/ml nicotine works for you most of the time, why not try 6, and keep some strong juice on hand for when you need it?

Yes, it's in large measure all about not smoking. But let's be honest, once over the hump, vaping is its own pleasure/vice/addiction. I love it. I think it's BETTER than smoking. So I think it's worth aiming to make it as safe as possible, and thankfully we have choices.

Agreed, understood, and well stated. I haven't tried too many juices. Looking at all the different flavorings I find that I'd rather EAT the real thing than vape the flavor. Just me. I smoked Menthol Silvers. So for me it's about the menthol and cool feeling. I have tried raspberry which I enjoy with the menthol. No other flavors really appeal to me. I only smoked one kind of analog so don't feel the need to vape many different flavors. Again, just me. Nice that there are other choices out there though.

Slowly decreasing nic level. Goal 0mg. Currently at 12mg.

Much prefer VG to PG.

My juice preferences in a nut shell. I like to keep things as simple as possible. Simplicity is elegance, beauty, and safety all rolled into one. The less complicated, the less that can go wrong. One of my little philosophies in life. LOL

Having shared all this, would appreciate any enlightening info on menthol and koolada cooling additives.

Again, great thread here. Thanks to all who contribute. It's been extremely helpful!
