Yay! I have made my first nicostick and it works a treat!
It's been like a crash course in electronics and when you break it down it is so damn simple. I impatiently bought a multimeter from RS because my order didn't arrive Friday. But once I had a multimeter everything became so easy and the paths and switch results became so easy to test. I had never used one before.
The biggest thing that confused me, was I couldn't work out which of the 3 connectors to use for the negative on the suggested n-type connector. Then once I tried with the multimeter it was clear I use none and weld directly to the outer case. Then everything worked!
Thanks for all the tips. Now I want my charger to arrive to charge that batteries properly and not use the juice that came with them. 8)

Finally my battery charger has arrived and I could charge up my batteries and try out my nicosticks (Both 510 and 901) and magnum mods. All I can say is WOW!!! These mods rock!
I vaped continuously for 7 hours on a single charge! That's a $2.50 battery giving me more vaping pleasure than a $6 ecig battery!!
I am off to Hawaii on Sunday and the life span of the 510 batteries has been stressing me out as when away I will not be able to charge as frequently. But with these trustfires, two will give me the confidence to last a whole day and enjoy the sights and sounds.
I had never made anything like this before and although I have had an initial expense setting up with the tools and components, I am now good to go and the mods look really nice.
Thanks to everyone on this forum for such awesome modding!! Problem is, now all my friends and colleagues want me to build them nicosticks.

Has anyone carried on a plane a nicostick? I am now not sure what the best way of getting it to Hawaii will be? Hand luggage or main?

This is weird, but I have 2 atomizers that don't want to do anything with my nicostick? They work fine with 510 batteries, but not with the nicostick? I have one that works really well but a little mythed as to why the other two don't?

Is this something common? Are there tests I should conduct on the atomizers?
I have a multimeter now and I remember reading people test their atty resistance?

I'll dig through the thread again and see if anyone discusses this.

Thanks

Sometimes the center part of the atomizer does not touch the center part of the mod connector (the two positives do not make contact). You might try the staple mod and see if that helps.

thanks NicoWolf, a mystery has unfolded and that sounds like the absolute issue, as it is only with a particular brand I have noticed has the issue. I did all the resistance checks and they all seem fine, then I discovered the pattern.
There must be a minute physical difference between the two attys I have.

Shall search the staple mod now. 8)
Thanks!!:D

I finally built my first nicostick yeasterday. 801 with the car charger adapter. My fiancee had an old 2 knob car radio and one of the threaded washers fit perfectly on the outside. Nice, solid mount. I have juice where I should with AA battery. Can't wait for 14500's to come in to see how it works!

Here's my Nicostick with a twist.

I put a 1/8" audio connector in the bottom. The Male connector is at the end of a USB wire. When USB is available, I simply plug the wire in. Automatically disconnects the battery, and runs on the wire. When I go out, I just pull the plug and I'm running on the battery again.

Next project will be to add a charging circuit so it will charge while plugged in.

YouTube - Nicostick Mod, volcano mod

I am loving my Nicostick. There is no way I could have survived on standard 510 batteries. One battery is lasting me all day and I always have a fully charged one just in case. I also have a 901 version in my luggage should it break. I did have an emergency last night when I removed the battery, it got caught up on the trimmed spring and ripped the spring off. But I managed to get it back in and connect ok. I'll need to re-solder the connection when I get back to Cali.

Thank you found it. Here is a copy for anyone wanting it from Nicowolf.
This time I will go through the parts list more thoroughly and provide links since the parts are from more than one place.

The box came from Battery Space.
Battery holder: 2 x AA Covered Battery Holder with On-Off Switch - RoHS Compliant - BB2AA
It already has a kill switch in it and does not require any extra modification like my RS box did. The price is better than RS, but shipping is more unless you order several at once (the shipping price is the same for one or 20).

The switch came from Radio Shack.
3A 125V SPST Pushbutton Momentary Switch - RadioShack.com
This switch is widely available elsewhere too. The important things to look for are: Pushbutton, Normally Open (aka N.O., Off{On}), Momentary action (this means that the button must be held down to be on as opposed to one click on next click off like a flashlight). I have also used this switch with BAD luck 12VDC 50mA SPST 6.2x6.2 mm SMT Tact Switch, 9.5mm High - RadioShack.com. It could not handle the current and failed. I have had another modder tell me his did the same, so I went with a very amply rated switch for the tutorial.

The atomizer connector also came from Radio Shack and is also widely available elsewhere.
Size N Coaxial DC Power Jack w/Switch - RadioShack.com
Size M Panel-mount Coaxial Power Jack w/Switch - RadioShack.com
It does not matter which one, both work the same. For the UK folks, I hear the one at Maplin's needs the center pin built up a little to make contact. There is a separate thread detailing the use of this part. I have also seen other DC parts in these sizes that may work but have not tried them yet.

So the Coaxial DC Power Jacks mentioned above screw directly onto a 501 atty?

I use old batteries. I cut them about an inch long, and gut them. I drill the hole a bit tight, and press the battery in with the connector out about 1/8". A drop of crazy glue keeps them solid.

Just remove the rubber insulator before you solder the new wires on.

Does anyone know of a retailer for 14500 batteries in the finger lakes region? I'm dying to try this thing this weekend. Thanks!

Sorry I can't help on sourcing batteries locally, but I would like to know where you got that battery box. It doesn't look like one from Radio Shack or Digikey.
