Some of the old timers here may remember back in the sixties that Japanese cars and motorcycles had the stigma early on as being junk. But for some strange reason they started outselling many American products. I'm a firm believer that they actually pushed American manufactures to improve their products to keep up. Overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder, etc, are almost commonplace now because the Japanese were the first to mass produce them at a moderately low cost.

How about something simpler ... Your building a new house.

What do you want ... Chinese drywall or American drywall?

If given the choice on which contractor you want building your home, you'd want my Chinese father over most of them. And yeah, he'll use Chinese made products that he knows to be just as good as American products to save money if the person who hires him wants to. He does know where to buy from. Is it so far fetched that those in the know CAN actually get good quality items from China?

Question for you folks ....

Lets say you needed to have a heart valve replaced with an artificial valve. The surgeon performs open-heart surgery and does the delicate replacement of the valve in order to save your life.

Given the choice, would you select a valve made in China, or one made in the US?

I would rather hitch a ride into space with China, as opposed to the US shuttle.

I love this "everything china is crap"
I have a Spyderco Police and an Enlan EL01 knife. One cost $120, the other $16. Anyone want to hazard a guess which I'd rather have on me in a do-or-die situation? And I'll give you a hint, I'd take the Sanrenmu 939 I used to have over both of them any day. that one will cost $20 for replacement of my lost one.

I have noticed here and elsewhere that one associates cheap and poor quality products with " Made In China". It's not actually true. Manufacturers in China are working with North American retailers to mass produce items according to the retailers specifications. It is the retailer who , in pursuit of exorbitant profits, want to pay the least possible per unit. Blame the retailer, not China. They are more than capable of making high quality items. "The russian" rba is proof of that. As well as many other things.

Wow ... I literally just had this conversation with a friend of mine today, and the Russian 91% was also a point in the conversation, and I agree all that you have said.

Quality control becomes an issues, whenever, and wherever there is mass production, the country of origin has nothing to do with it. China is capable of, and has produced very high quality devices, and just as there are those things which are poorly made ... an issue that is not exclusive to China ... Ford aka Fix.Or.Repair.Daily anyone?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I have never received any cheap junk from China, and not because it doesn't exist, but because I know how to spot, and stay away from the cheap junk ... its really not that hard.

I'm getting kind of sick of seeing "China sucks!!!" all over the board. I'm half Chinese. There are a lot of great things that came from China. You can not dismiss everything that comes out of one of the largest countries in the world as all "junk".

Agreed!! I have also said this before .. It is as though too many here on ECF are completely ignorant of the fact (or don't care) that there are members of this board who happen to be of Asian descent, and I find the blatant hate talk directed towards China to be OFFENSIVE, not mention at times brimming with Racist undertones. :glare:

Revisionist history. The first e-cig was patented in the USA in the 60s.

Not quite .. that american was claimed to have made a tobaccoless cigarette like device, which he never manufactured, or sold ... I have yet to even see a picture of the device. Nothing about this invention exist beyond a few words written on a Wiki page .. suspect, and possibly revisionist.

ETA: I stand corrected ... a drawing of a smokeless cartridge design does exist ... I seened it!

Let there be light!

Let me google that for you

You will be amazed as to what it looks like at least the patent drawings. Very similar to the egos and such out there. Quite frankly it is a battery and a tube. Just like a silly boy with a horse and stick.

Then you also have the non-combustion cigarette from a decade earlier.

my E̶x̶p̶l̶o̶d̶e̶r̶ Explorer takes offense to that statement. :p

on a more serious note, this conversation goes on with everything. it's a serious issue in my RC hobby, especially with Traxxas enthusiasts of all folks... even moreso on their own website. you see it all the time, especially with their forum moderators. chinese junk this, chinese junk that. only site i've ever been banned from. they get uppity real quick when you point out that their parts are made in taiwan (with stickers all over them that somehow every fanboi misses) and their electronics are either rebadged chinese products or outsourced to an "american" company that buys their components from china in bulk and tosses them in a hopper for a machine to do the assembly. american company, my behind! pay american employees and we'll talk...

when china launched its 2nd generation nuclear subs the defense industry in the usa were stunned.
they were quiet. really quiet.turns out it was because they introduced non-cavitating propellers.
at the time the usa assumed you needed a computer guided lathe to shape them into tolerances under
1/10000 of an inch that cost at that time 1/4 of a million dollars.
the chinese didn't have such a lathe.the solution?
they hand machined them.of course they were direct knock off's of ours.
the point is china is a world class manufacturer that has priorities.
don't ever let anyone tell you different.

Well I respect this, and yes, it would be first depiction of what this older smokeless cigarette may have looked like, had it been manufactured. And shout out to Long Island, NY, the inventor is from Merrick :2cool:

ETA: I found this part to be most interesting : The capsule 14 is provided with cigarette smoke in a concentrated state or it may be provided with filler material such as cotton or mineral matter in which thellavor` and taste components of tobacco 'are absorbed.` Thus the =cotton may be saturated with nicotine, cigarette tar, etc. as desired. :

It seems that cotton was poised to be the "it wick" for quite sometime.

I must be dense and blind. I can't find a battery of any sort in the drawings, nor a mention of same in the patent-ese verbiage. In fact, the device seems to rely more on inspiration of air through a capsule containing a liquid or some sort of filling saturated with the liquid.

Well my brand new Ford Explorer inspired the statement! ... I loved that Truck but my God, I spent my first four months of ownership at the Ford dealer ... and as I remember, so did my mother back in 1991 when she purchased a brand new Ford Thunderbird. The funny thing is, I remember bragging to my friend about my mom's brand new red car (kids :p), and my friend is the one who said "Oh, didn't you know Ford means fix or repair daily?" He didn't lie, that T-bird was a constant headache to mom for the entire 8 years that she owned it. :p

oh to reminisce. the ole' thunderturd, how i did love thee. let me count the ways.

alright, i'm done.

FYI, the exploders don't hold their value well at all. check out blue book values on a few of the older models. if you're the type that likes to sell your old vehicle and get a new one every couple years, that may matter immensely. though, mine has been a tough little beast worthy of the reputation ford trucks have in certain circles.
