I haven't had a smoke since June....sure, I never dropped from 24 (nor do I plan to...) but I was doing good!

But today, I took 4 puffs off a smoke and threw it out, my chest hurts and it tasted awful (it was from a pack I had from May)...do I need to reset my counter?

I feel like {Moderated}....all this started this weekend, and now I just let myself down because I get so mad or down sometimes...I am so upset

There's a positive side to all of this: the cigarette you had tasted awful. When I was quitting, I saw it as a huge milestone when I got to a place where the taste and smell of cigarettes turned me off. Quitting is very difficult (one of the most difficult things I've ever done) and most of us have had minor setbacks along the way. I think the fact that you've made it seven months is a HUGE accomplishment, so congratulations! The next time you feel the urge to reach for a cigarette, just think back and remember how awful that last one tasted and how much it made your chest hurt and sooner or later the negative association will take hold.

Don't beat yourself I've slipped a few times myself, and I wouldn't reset the counter over 4 puffs. It's a tough thing to do even with vaping so just pick up where you left off and try to remember that cruddy feeling/taste for the next time your brain tries to trick you into thinking you need one.

Thanks so much you guys ((hugs)) I am seriously sitting here bawling because I messed up....and it was all over something I can't do anything about, just got frustrated....I don't think I am going to set back my counter, that would just make me feel even worse, I just hope the awful smell and taste is enough to keep me from doing it again..I get into this negative mind state (like today) and I start to get to feeling it doesn't matter what happens to me and then I just made myself feel worse :'(

This process is not perfect, and none of us here are perfect people. Even though putting cigarettes aside for vaping was, for me at least, pretty easy doesn't mean that smoking isn't still a very powerful addiction and will continue to be for a good long while.

You need to reset your counter IF you intend to go back to analogs. Otherwise, in my book at least, you're still an ex-smoker. Stumbling on the path doesn't mean you've lost the path and changed your direction. If anything, and I hope this is true for you, having those 4 puffs just cemented in your mind how badly you don't want to go back to your old ways.

I know there are folks out there that will say you should change your counter and start back from Zero, but I think that takes away too much of the progress you made along the way. This is your wake-up call. Analogs are always there, waiting for us to slip-up so we must always be vigilant for those triggers and desires that will lead us away from the direction we want to go.

Forgive yourself and throw away all your cigarettes from MAY!!

You came here. You asked us for help and admitted that you stumbled. You're doing the right things. Keep coming back here for support, advice and funny stories.

Keep your chin up.
We're here for you.

its hard when you start. when i started i was back n forth between cigarettes and vaping. When you vape long enough and get all that gunk out of your body, the next time you try to go for a smoke your body will just reject it altogether. trying to smoke now just gives me a natural gag reflex like my body is telling me dont do that, makes me wonder sometimes how i even started smoking and how i got 'used' to it. At first I got into smoking because I was curious, but now that I've experienced it and quit, knowing that I would have to put effort to force my body from not rejecting cigarettes is a good thing, because it seems like I'd have to do 'work' to get addicted to cigarettes again, and thats not something I would ever work towards again ever

I agree; if my own backslide had been only 4 puffs, I wouldn't have reset my counter. But noooooooo, I backslid for a whole month... So counter says 5 months 3 wks instead of nearly a year.

Cigarettes suck. They really do.

Yeah, I try one of the wife Marlboro lights once in a while.. I smoked reds for 35 years. Been Vaping since July. I did not switch to quit smoking , only to save money ON smoking. Problem is that Cigarettes taste like ashtray to me now. Still love the smell of a burning cigarette, just not the taste. Strange cause I Vape exclusively NET, Tobacco flavors. OH well....

Four puffs is nothing! Don't be sad, and don't reset your counter. You also now know that they taste yucky to you. that's great!

I've had four or so puffs from probably 2-3 ciggies since starting vaping. Couple I found under the sofa, the other a friend offered. Couldn't smoke more than half of any, as they tasted yucky and made me feel sick. Didn't reset the counter; there was no need.

Ahhhhhhh....listen........congrats on your accomplishment! It is very real! You have been off the cigs for over 6 months before you slipped. In the big picture, this is akin, I think, to driving behind a bus spewing out diesel exhaust ONE TIME on your trip to the grocery store. Taking those 4 drags just proved to yourself how VILE those things really are! (2 years ago, I couldn't even imagine saying that cigarettes were vile, since I just loved to smoke! Now, I really just want to vomit when I smell the things, and I am NOT one of those miltant anti-smoking types).

Pat yourself on the back for the major accomplishment, go another 6 months vaping, and I, for one, would have no problem at all saying that you have been off the cigs for a full year. Your very minor 'slip-up' is NOTHING in the big picture. Really, no biggie. The main thing is to get back on the wagon.

Many congrats on your major accomplishment!!!! Keep those milestones coming! Congrats also on finding out for sure that smoking analogs is more vile than you thought!!
