I would've put this in a new thread but they system won't let me :( Not enough posts I guess.

I'm going to Maldives in a few weeks time. Am more than happy to smoke on the aeroplane but more than a tad scared when I arrive. The country is strictly Moslem and therefore all baggage is checked on arrival to ensure no alcohol is taken in and I'm worried they may think my little bottles of eliquid are drugs and I'll be locked up indefinitely. 8-o I've sort of made my mind up to go on patches for a couple of weeks but just wondered if anybody had any experience of it. I've heard stories where people have taken prescription drugs and detained but not sure how true they are, quite possibly scaremongering. Thanks in advance!

I hope you had a great time, if you have been already. Going myself in a couple of weeks for xmas. Woohoo! Never been. I am a very lucky girly in my opinion. It will be fantastic.
I am more worried about being able to charge enough batts (have even thought of taking one of those multi socket things) etc and do I have enough liquid...will i need extra atomisers?????? Oh the worry of it all, lol.
I plan to pack my stuff in main suitcase and have just one ecig with a couple of spare batteries and some carts in cabin bag. I am sure it will be ok and if not, not. What can you do? Patches are rubbish and I would seriously rather smoke cigarettes and start again when home. i am not going to suffer with stupid patches. :) I need my fix.

I don't know. The memo stated along the lines that even though there is no smoke, no fire, no heat and the battery is too small to worry of a fire risk, they are still not allowed. My thinking is that there is not enough known on what exactly comes out when you exhale. I think there is just not enough known about them in general. I think another reason is that if passengers see smoke, although not smoke, they will freak. Maybe not that it is fire, just that they may think that a person is smoking. The Flight Attendants probably don't want to have to explain to every passenger that it is not smoke, there is no fire, blah blah blah..

Perception is a big problem, CalPilot. There have been press accounts of bar owners banning e-cigs because the practice looks like smoking. That is too confusing for non-smokers. Too hard to even think about explaining. So, while e-smoking doesn't produce second-hand smoke or sidestream smoke or a fire hazard, it still will be disallowed because of perception. We can overcome a great deal by having science on our side. But perception? Hard to argue with what someone might think.

I talked to the TSA through email
Dear Mr. Werden:

Thank you for your electronic message dated November 9, 2008, to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Contact Center concerning the use of electronic smokeless cigarettes aboard commercial aircraft.

A search of records found no statements by TSA endorsing the use of electronic smokeless cigarettes aboard passenger aircraft. TSA has not conducted an evaluation of this product line.

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in transportation security.

Sincerely yours,

Office of Security Operations
Transportation Security Administration

I replied to them

Does that mean you will not stop anyone from using them? Id like to get a answer that is specific, such as:
No you can not use them until an investigation is completed
OR
Yes you can use them until an investigation determines they can not be used

Can you provide a direct answer such as that?

Lets see what they say

Mr. Werden, they are not on the Prohibited Items List. However, I believe that all air carriers and the Department of Transportation prohibit any form of smoking aboard passenger flights.

I got back last night and been up since 5.30am so thoroughly jet lagged :D but it was well worth it. 28 dives in all WOOHOO!

I had no problems with the transporting the efags. For the plane trip I used an old glasses case to store 6 fully charged and carried on with hand luggage. The flight is over 10 hours long so wanted to be sure I'd have enough and allow for possible breakdowns. I carried the eliquid, chargers and spares in the main suitcase. I also carried my screwdriver in main luggage but to be honest only used it once or twice on the island.

I didn't vape in the toilets, just did it discreetly from my seat under the blankets. Nobody turned a hair or noticed. I'm not sure which airline you're travelling with but for me there was both night and day flight. Both flights were freezing cold so the blanket was a good excuse to wrap up warm.

On the island I took a double adaptor (they have UK sockets), used two chargers and made use of them as and when needed. Being paranoid  I took 11 batteries with a variety of flavours of juice (I'd estimate I probably only used about 15ml in all) and then typically stuck to one flavour! :p

I came back with only 6 working batteries. I'm not sure if that was down to the humidity or not but the ones I consider to have stopped working will charge but only work for about 10 minutes or less. None of the atomisers appear affected.

One thing I did notice and I'd be really interested in your opinion is taste. I couldn't get any flavour at all. I love high coffee mixed with medium vanilla but just couldn't get a hit from it. In the end I stuck with high coffee mixed with medium French Pipe. There was very little flavour though so I can only think it may have been the heat, the humidity or both.

The staff on the island had heard of ecigs but never seen them. I gave one of them a chance to drag on the screwdriver and he was completely blown away by it and thought I was offering it as a gift 8-o. That was snatched back pretty quickly, I can tell ya! :D

I hope you have a fantastic time and absolutely sure you will! I've been a few times to different islands and just think it's paradise on earth. I've PM'd you to ask which island you're going to cos don't want to take the thread away from it's purpose.

It's bloody cold in England.... :(

Robw. The TSA does not really have any direct control over what people are allowed to do on commercial aircraft. The FAA and the airlines set the rules. The TSA controls what goes through security checkpoints and indirectly can affect what goes on by not allowing certain things through. You would be better off talking to the FAA

During the lighter bans on aircraft, I would always go to the store and buylike 4 5-packs of lighters and strategically place them throughout my person. Pockets, socks, Cuffs of pant legs, and a few places I prefer not to go over. :) After hitting 4 ports on the round trip and getting home, I usually wound up still having at least 5-10 lighters left. Kinda turned into my little "game" while I was in the military and flying all the time.

Anyways, I just found out about e-smoking and placed an order from puresmokers and e-smokey treats 2 days ago. I am flying on the 31'st back to Illinois from Wash DC and will more than likely attempt to openly use it in the terminal and on the plane. If it is successful and I dont end up in Guantanimo Bay, Ill try to get a pic or two of me on the plane with a vape cloud.

Its horrible that most of us feel embarassed to do the things we choose to do in the open. The next time a non-smoker tells you that you should quit, tell them they should start...might make them tolerable to be around.

I just flew from the USA (NC) to Italy, and I vaped in three airports and on two planes. I did it discreetly, but without covering my face or doing in the restroom, and nobody noticed. It was great, especially since we were delayed five hours in JFK, and spent at least 3 hours of this delay on a plane on the tarmac. All considered, I spent twenty hours in non-smoking places... As I never could manage nicotine gums, I used to use a patch for these trips, but I would still badly crave cigarettes (and itch on the spot of the patch), so I would go outside in the connecting ariports, having to go through security again, etc, and stand in the rain and cold in NY in December is no fun. Also, the delay would have driven me up the wall, as one is virtually a prisoner in these circumstances.... The e-cig made a difficult trip a much more tolerable one. I even managed to sleep for 2-3 hours on the way here, which I never manage on planes. I wonder if it had to do with not missing cigarettes so badly.
