Ah! OK, if the knurled piece is from the tank, then that's the hybrid cap. See my photo above. The thin line below the knurled piece is the edge of the hybrid cap.

I disagree, mine is also legit with the working authentication and it has a copper top hybrid piece with the paint on the top. Not saying this is legit or not.

Sorry, was actually replying to your other post, with the stainless one top cap, I'm assuming they came with both. I've seen other colors offered by vendors too, I think tiffany was one.

I like my phantom too, great recessed button, and mine has the battle scars to tell some tales.

Soooo, I'm confused, does Canada not have laws regarding minors purchasing nicotine products?

The issue is lithium batteries, not nicotine.

What can be learned from this?
An incident like this is caused by a chain of design errors, user actions, and possibly a battery fault.

- Sealed metal tubes will probably explode if a battery vents violently

-Batteries are designed to vent gas from the top; its what keeps the cell itself from exploding. The battery may physically block gas from escaping to the bottom of the mod should there be vent holes in the bottom

- Small vents at the bottom of the tube are useless, only very large gas vents near the top have a good chance of preventing an explosion
Mech Mods with top venting holes?

- Building coils lower than 0.2 ohm will raise the amp draw exponentially
and this increases risk - the power graph shows a significant change at 0.2 ohms and starts to climb vertically as resistance is reduced further

- Using cheap batteries with ultra low res coils is a certain route to high risk - it needs 30 amp batteries of guaranteed high quality

- Using long draws or machine-gun draws to create monster clouds stresses the battery much more

- Cloud Contests are events where people put ultra high stress on their rig to create monster clouds; if spectating, you could consider standing at the back of the room to stay safe

- If you run a Cloud Contest then you should probably check that your personal and business insurance is really, really good and is appropriate for dangerous sports

- People are now discussing the safety (!) involved with putting 100-amp pulses on their batteries in order to create the biggest clouds with the lowest resistance coils; there is only one way this is going to go and you don't want to be within the explosion radius: someone may have a counterfeit battery, or one that is just too small for this extreme usage mode together with ignoring the device getting warm or even hot.

Actually I think the issue is more education, which neither this kid nor his parents took the time to do.

Not that they weren't "educated" but more so took it for granted. I can't stress it enough, even your common AA battery packaging has warnings

Doesn't stop the fact someone put it in backwards, short circuit it, or w/e to cause it to fail. Still ends up being user error, not user misinformed. Information is literally everywhere...

Read the article. I have mixed feelings... One one hand, I feel bad for this child. He will most likely have permanent dental, and cosmetic damage as a result of this. Possibly other internal injuries that may prevent basic life activities, or even impair speech.

On the other, I'm sure his reason is similar to why some of us started smoking... We wanted to look cool (poor reason).

I am constantly slapped in the face by these Fresh Skater Society Kings with Sub-Ohm hats and mech mods (held in adorable fanny-pack holsters) with fancy over-processed HDR Instagram accounts showing sexy men and women vaping, with tens-of-thousands of subscribers (most of which are under 18) who view them doing "smoke" tricks and want to be just like them for all the wrong reasons.

He probably had a debit/credit card, or bitcoin, or went to a shop that was struggling financially and just wanted the sale. Some Online Order Processing Companies do not verify the cardholder's birthday, some do automatically. Some take the cheap way and make the customer click "I agree that I am of legal smoking age in my country/territory" approach and can somehow sleep at night...

Seems that everytime I read about these types of incidents, it's always a mech mod that exploded. In this case, a Wotofo Phantom mod.

No.
The mod didn't explode.
The battery did.
The mod can handle more than any battery can produce.

Probably because the gear was used improperly, by a minor, who wasn't the end user the manufacturer intended to use it.

Mechanicals are by design for advanced user who know the risks, know how to use the gear safely, and know what to do in the event of a problem.

I can't lie either, I have mixed feelings about, but the information is still the same.

Not clear by choice of wording, but either the kid or the father bought the setup ( recent smoking age is 21 in Canada from what I was "told") intended to be used by a minor at age 16. The parents have no legal ground for any lawsuit as they can't hold up their end of the responsibility of being a parent.

It's sad, it really is, from all angles.

The cloud chasers do that with massive coil builds. There's a good bit of ramp time to heat that much wire. They exhale to empty their lungs to get maximum vapor. There's a good chance the kid did it just because his local contest winner does. And also that he was cloud chasing, and thus with a low build.

Now I'm super confused to the point of smiling at how strange the world can be. :D

That sounds all kinds of counterproductive. But, whatever gets you... erm..... eh... makes me wonder... does it really charm the chicks?

No accounting for taste, and that's a fact.

This is just my personal opinion but if you have a pre-fab tank on a mech you're already doing it wrong. Hell I'm a die hard mech user because I vape Reo's, but if I ever swtiched to a RTA, or a pre-fab tank system damn right regulated would be the way I would go.

I think f more people felt that way it would help cut down on these accidents, because honestly it seems it's always someone with a hybrid mech and a tank. Rarely if ever, do I remember it being one of the crazy build RDA coud chasers types who so regularly get blamed for incoming regulation here.

Some people blow into the atty before they inhale while it ramps up to empty their lungs and the non vaporous air in the atty to maximize the amount of vapor they inhale. This isn't really an issue here.. There are numerous videos of people on YouTube doing it. It's just a way to get the most vapor.

I wish reporters would do actual research before writing these articles... But that would contradict their agenda.

That's not a Reporter.
A reporter would have a shred of integrity and actually report facts, maybe doing an hour or two of actual research.
That's just someone writing Fear! Doom! Lookout! just to get attention to a poorly written piece.
Weak.

No, not an issue. Just seemed a bit odd to some of us who are ignorant in the ways of the cloud chasers.

just to get attention

AKA - Ad Revenue.

Analytics are amazing... especially when paired with Google and AdSense. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these reporters have had their jobs threatened by low numbers of clicks on their past articles.
