Okay, so I have decided if my local vape shop has it in stock I'm probably going to purchase the 40w TC tomorrow. Indoor Smokers did a review and they sent him one with the GS tank. Does it come like that, or was that a special thing they sent him to review? Also, he said the GS tank has nickel coils which are necessary for temperature control. If I were to pursue making my own coils in the future, is it easy to get a hold of nickel wire that is safe to use for RDAs? I just want to make sure I'm making a good choice. I don't want to buy a device that's going to severely limit my options. If it will, I may just get the 50w device that isn't TC.

I believe the 40w is being sold both with and without the GS-Tank ("GST"). I bought my 40w TC and the GST separately. I think that the GST comes with TC coils only, but you can get non-TC coils that will fit the GST. Your options are 1.5 Ohm, horizontal dual-coil (silica wicks, cotton surround), 1.2 Ohm, single, vertical all-cotton coil and the .015 Ohm, single, vertical TC coil (cotton). All of the coils will fit any GS tank (GS-Air, GS-M, GS-MS and GST).

Nickel wire is readily available, but don't know that many people rebuild the GS TC coils, as space is tight and Ni200 is soft and therefore difficult to work with. IMO, you'd be better off buying an RDA or RTA if you want to build or rebuild TC coils.

On the other hand, I believe many of us - myself included - rebuild the 1.5 Ohm dual coil with Kanthal. It's almost as easy as building the old Protank coils. There's a couple of youtube vid available detailing the process.

Hope this helps.

[IMR Thanks
What I want to know is will an ultra sonic cleaner thoroughly clean the coils cotton, and remove the carbon buildup and prolong the life of the coil??? In other words restore the coil COTTON
Once cotton burns, there's no going back and cleaning it. It's different with silica. As long as the silica isn't burnt (and that's rare), you can UC a coil with the silica in it, and get excellent results! :)

I don't want to buy a device that's going to severely limit my options. If it will, I may just get the 50w device that isn't TC.
I don't have the 40 or 50 watt iStick, but from all of the research on both, you'd be better off getting the 40 over the 50, between the two (too many people had problems with the 50), because if you don't decide to use TC, you can still use the 40 watt for normal vaping applications just by switching to the Voltage/Wattage mode. :)

Good Morning!

I agree with @IMRs that the 40W TC iStick would be the way to go, rather than the 50W. I also have heard of some issues (firing button sticking or mis-firing...something along those lines) with the 50W. The 40W TC can go either way...VV/VW vaping or TC. I personally only use the VV/VW mode. The tank comes with some of the iSticks, but not always. I'm pretty sure that the vendor's testing kit would be one including the tank for obvious reasons. The sellers want the vendor to test with the "approved" tank. And the GS Air tank is a great one (but the GS Air M is better).

I initially looked at getting the iStick 40W TC, then the eVic VTC Mini.
I picked up the VTC Mini since it is a much nicer looking device with a ton of features, alas the VTC has an issue with TC and we are waiting for Joyetech to issue a new firmwar or something that hopefully provides a fix.

In the meantime I picked up an IPV D2, very very impressed with this little guy, comes with a sleeve, takes an 18650 and very comfortable to hold.

I tried the iStick 40W TC and was not really impressed with it over the other two devices, the IPV D2 is a little more expensive but well worth it IMHO. Something to consider as I wasn't impressed with the iStick 60WTC review from the Vapor Trail.

He does good reviews, it's just every time I look at him, his eyes seem be going in two different directions to me. o_O

Rip even likes both the IPV D2 and the iSictk 100W for a sub $50 TC/Non TC purchase.
Video for those that can handle the foolishness. ;)

What's the issue with the VTC?

What's the issue with the VTC?
Here is my problem with the VTC mini.

1. Screw on the cold atomizer and the mini detected the resistance at 0.09 ohms which was the build I had in the KFL.
2. I vaped this at 430F/20W perfectly, never went into TP and it was a nice warm vape. Let my friend check it out too.
3. Let the mini sit and go to sleep. When you hit the fire button the resistance has dropped to 0.07
4. Passed it over to my friend to try... He was absolutely amazed at how poor the vape was compared to the previous test. Weak and the mini constantly went into TP mode.
5. I let it sit a half an hour unscrewed the KFL fired a few times to clean the setting, screwed the KFL back on and it was back to 0.09 ohms.
6. I hit yes for new coil, passed it over and the vape was back to normal with no TP kicking in.

If I would have chosen No to the new coil option it would have had the same pathetic vape it did after it woke up from sleep mode.

I put the KFL after it cooled on the IPV D2 with 430F/20W passed it to my friend and he vaped it for quite a while as it worked as expected.

You can tell when the mini goes into TP mode as the vape suffers drastically with the power dropping from 20W to 4W etc... Locking the resistance makes no difference as the mini adjusts to whatever the current resistance is. If you could tell the mini that this coil is 0.09 ohms and lock that value so it cant change then there probably would not be a problem.

Those are my issues and others have enjoyed the same.

There are some that have no problem at all and believe that those of us who do, obviously have to be doing something wrong or just do not understand how the device works... :glare:

My Heaven Gifts $5 package arrived this morning, bubble wrap... I haven't seen so much bubble wrap...
I had a notification card in my mail box last night and couldn't figure out what the package was at the Post Office that required a signature. I had totally forgotten about the HG order.

I couldn't get a sleeve for my iStick as the shipping to Canada brought it over $5, so I picked a pair of blunt 5ml syringes for filling the Aqua V2.

Labeled as "Metal Tubes" on the customs form, it's all good. ;)

Got to spend some time reading up here, the old thread got to be an encyclopedia. I am an avid iStick consumer, but with my simple setups I have much to read to understand why wattage is going up much higher than I ever could use, but then I only use simpler setups/tanks. I'm sure this has been addressed a thousand times, but those high w/vv must be for coil rebuilders. I am interested in the iStick TC40W, and I'm looking for something better than the GS Air-M that I depend on lately, thinking "wouldn't it be great to make use of those higher w/vv?" (without having to rebuild coils)

My original iStick 20w has been "preserved" by using a bender adapter, but now the buttons are seeming more finicky. Therefore I wonder which wins the shoot out: iStick 40w vs the iStick TC40W.

I must be missing something. The iStick 40 is both VW and TC.

I was not aware that there is a iStick 40W without the TC. I have the 40W TC and it works pretty well. I do not use the temperature control feature, however.

I've heard seriously mixed reviews regarding the TC tanks and coils made for the TC. Not having tried them (and little interest therein) I can't comment personally. I'm sure those whith TC experience will hop in.

Curious why you want to replace the GS M? As far as I'm concerned...of the tanks I've tried...it's my favorite. Seems to work the best the most consistently, without leaks, gurgles or other annoyances. I also like the original GS Air coils 1.5ohm the best. I have heard serious mixed reviews on the all cotton wicks and quite a lot of negative opinions about the nickel coils by Eleaf. I also have heard that the nickle coils are really hard to re-coil.

For a price comparison...the TC40W iStick + GS Tank is available online for $39.95...(plus shipping but NO tax)...

I saw someone talking about rebuilding the 1.5 and 1.2 gs coils I can't figure out how to take the heads apart to do it, I'm using 2 of the 30 watt isticks and the gs m tanks and use kanthal is there a link or something that can show me how to do it step by step I'd love to be able to rebuild the dual 1.5 and the single 1.2. Thanks in advance.
