This may be the issue:
"The IJOY TSS coil is a pre-made stainless steel coil with spot welded nickel legs"

I think I've read something about this before.
I was thinking that might be an issue having a different wire as the legs. Maybe its figuring the tc resistance on the nickel wire rather than the ss coil.

The notch coils are made this way. I'm have no ohm changes or problems with the original 5mm OD Wismec .23 ohm SS notch coils in TC mode.

Joyetech Wismec Notch Coil Preview - Vaping360

"the Notch Coil has abundant surface area — much more than a typical spaced coil, which seems to work best in rebuildable sub-ohm tanks. The main “body” of the coil is stainless steel, which heats up quickly and provides super-clean flavor (and in my opinion, is safer than other vaping wire materials). The leads are non-resistance nickel wire. I was told that the Notch Coil will work well with temperature control mods"

Ive just had real bad luck with tc and the Pico. Not sure why. Kanthal vw works fine but the tc is real sporadic on if it wants to work.

The notch coil is 0.24 ohms, and I have watts set to max at 24w. But I cant turn the temp past 200F or it will burn. The vape is pretty warm at 200F which shouldn't be right.
That makes absolutely no sense at all. The numbers 24W@200F and turning it up makes it burn, tells me that there is really something wrong with your build/wicking.

These are the Notch coils I use.
$4.37 Demon Killer 316L Stainless Steel Notch Coil Resistance Wire RBA Atomizers (10-Pack) - 0.2ohm / quick heating at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

I have used them on the Pico, Cuboid and DNAs, in TC and working perfectly. The 5mm coils will take a full strand of Rayon to fill it properly and don't really come alive below 35W. I run them at 50W/480F on all my devices for a very dense and flavorful vape. These notch coils are not really designed as a tootle puffer coil and don't perform well under low power IMHO.

I have never seen anyone with so many obscure problems... o_O
Too bad that you only have the Pico and Merlin to use. It would be interesting to see if different gear would cause you as much trouble.

Something like this possibly...

I've had the same issue with this same device before where I have to have it extremely low in order to use it. It does that with regular ss wire builds and also when I used the titanium wire. I still might get a DNA 75. I am hoping to get a good black friday or Cyber Monday sale on them. IMO the Pico (I have) really only works great in wattage mode. TC on mine is like Russian roulette. I know if I unlock the the resistance and let it change by like 0.01Ω, it will drastically change the temperature I have to use in order to produce vapor. Like I would have to turn it up to 310F to use it, which is still really low. I plan to rebuild it with a regular 26g ss coil later this week.

Thanks! I haven't been using TC on my Pico lately, but I guess I'll have to give it another go. :)
no changes to tc functionality in new firmware, just new view modes like puff counter. preheat is for vw mode. tc mode is preheat by design by setting your max watts in tc mode to get up to temp then watts are lowered to maintain temps.

Oh I see. I was thinking the preheat was for TC, like the DNA.

That would have been my guess as well.
I have the PH update on my old VTC but haven't used it much yet. If that's how JTech are playing it... I'll stop waiting for it to come out for my 100TCs, where it would be of more use.

And especially if it's forcing the new "simplified" interface... do not want. ;)

The 100w has new firmware with VW preheat and among the new interface options is one with volts visible again if that is what you were missing from the simplified interface - Softwares for iStick TC100W - Eleaf electronic cigarette
