I vape with mine on pass through all the time it's chargin. There has never been a report of a problem with pass throughs to my knowledge. Been doin it a year with V3's.That's what it's for ............paranoia :)

I use it all the time also--it's a feature I look for in a device. If there is a safety issue with it I would like to know...

I use my laptops in pass-through mode all the time ;)

Seriously though, it's nothing magic to have pass-through, no super special technology or anything like that... it's basically just a lack of blocking it from working and using a $0.10 charging IC that wont fry on the occasion you try to pull more current than it can supply if your battery is actually dead. Other than stand alone passthrough devices, I haven't seen one yet where the charge IC can supply the entire passthrough current. I haven't read the entire thread, did someone check the current draw on any of these iSticks to see if they are actually pulling enough current through the charge-port to bypass the battery or is the charger just supplementing the battery?

I can not claim to understand fully what you said, but from my "studies" here, we are charging the batt in what we call "pass thru" mode. (The device is plugged and charging, and we are vaping it.) Each vape, while in that state, is depleting the battery by "that much" (the one hit, two hits, whatevs), but then it immediately goes back into charge mode. So these are not true pass thrus (bypassing the batt).

Also, with other devices, and info from modders in the know, there ARE some devices that require NO VAPING while charging. Those Li-Po batts for example, such as in Mamu's DNA devices, are not to be used/vaped while charging.

Ok, that's about as geeky as I get. Forgive me if I only gave partial info. I will leave that to those who obviously know more than I.

In your "studies" have you ever heard of anyone having "problems" while vaping in pass-thru mode? I have my hockey mask at the ready!

PS-- I would subscribe to "Katdarling's Vaping & Blinging 101" online course should it become available.:D

The charging board on the iSticks output 4.2V @ 1A. The iStick 30W, by definition, can pull 10A+ off the battery. So it is clearly a charge-while-vaping feature and not actual "pass-through".

Because Evolv only supplies .5A charging boards, Mamu has always played it safe, bypassing the chipset and running the leads from her preferred 1A charging boards directly to the battery(s). Vaping-while-charging is only possible if the chipset cuts the charging circuit when the device is fired. That is why there must be sufficient voltage in the battery to fire the device in a V-W-C situation.

ETA: If I wasn't clear, the battery is only charging when we aren't vaping. :)

You are not only subscribed, Canad'eh dahlink, you have a reserved seat at the front of the klass.

Nice job. That's the kind of info I was looking for, well... it's enough of what I was looking for, for now. Thanks!

That was a sensationally wonderful post by our (now infamous) alden. I blogged it.

I vape on my 20W istick while it's plugged into the cigarette lighter in my car every day.

That's also the main reason I love the charging port on the bottom and not on the side, where some people seem to want it.

I use my iSticks in pass through mode too. And I also prefer the usb charge port in the base of the device for this reason. Having it on the side instead would be a major annoyance for me.
