Looks like it might be covered under long term warranty. I'd at least go to the dealer to let them know just in case your warranty is close to expiring. The part is $530 - $750 with 1.3 hrs shop time.

thanks, ktm ;) that dealership no longer exists :( mike will know that woodall gave up on mazda a couple of years ago. and on top of that, everybody who tried getting it replaced under the engine drivetrain warranty was refused by mazda :?:

calling all mechanics! ;) finally had the code read for my abs and traction control lights that've been coming on lately as the day warms up. found the corresponding tsb from mazda
http://am.mazdaserviceinfo.com/mazdaesi/index?page=detail_pagelet&id=TSB710&actionPrint=print
our virginia summer has been the pits this year - very hot and soupy - but can i expect the lights to disappear once fall arrives? abs might come in handy in the winter even though i'm fairly confident my driving skills would see me through a skid.
i got way too much going on atm to worry about this ....................
"This concern may occur if the vehicle is used in an area with high ambient temperatures and humidity. Under these conditions, the pump motor brush in the ABS Hydraulic Unit may have poor contact causing the ABS warning light to turn ON. To correct the problem, the material of the motor brush has been changed."

Sounds to me like they are monitoring the motor rotation by pulses created by the brushes. That is cheap ... engineering IMO. Being a hack by birthright I would try a .01 or .1uf filter cap across the brush wires just for the heck of it but I have no idea if that would help, just a gut instinct.

Morning tibs, if you want to give me the code/s they pulled along with the year, make and model I'll research them this weekend for you. I twisted wrenches for 25 years in dealerships but it's been some years since I had to give it up and have lost all my insider connections over the years.

Yeah, brakes are not considered part of the driveline, that would be parts that propel a vehicle, engine, transmission, transfer case and axle assemblies. Getting mazda to help pay all or part of the repair costs when outside the warranty is an option, we used to help customers with that but you'd have to pay to have it diagnosed at a dealer, have them present the case to mazda for consideration and if approved the repairs will have to be made at a dealer.

If this effects a big number of vehicles and mazda does nothing there may be class action suits. I'd bet there is chatter on forums out there on this, you could search the code/s and some terms included in the tsb title, even the part numbers listed on the tsb. Might even find some mazda tech's talking about the issue and fixes.

lights are never on first thing in the morning but pop up after the 4th or so start-up of the day and by that time temps have been in the 80s.
now that we're cooling down i'm curious to see if those lights disappear! ;)

but with this being a known fault my mechanic's suggestion going used is no longer an option! with my luck i'll end up with the same thing! that brush material was not changed till 2011

i believe it was the code c0020 quoted in the mazda service bulletin :(

"abs and traction control lights that've been coming on lately"

So it was just one code? These questions may help me, are there two separate warning lights or are they one? When it/they go off, do they go off only after you start it next time or do they go off while still driving after a while during the same trip?

OK, You've already farther down the road then I thought, you've already figured out what I now suspect, it's a problem with the motor on the ABS pump assembly. Sounds like it stops running, you hit a bump, brushes connect and it starts working again for a while. If it was my personal car and I was down to replacing the unit, I'd try pulling the motor off the unit and see if I could get an electric motor repair shop to overhaul it with new brushes, got nothing to loose if you have to replace it anyways. Going used, your right, roll of the dice and as you say most likely you'll end up with the same problem. I'm sure there are places that rebuild the ABS unit assembly, some may have rebuilts on the shelf ready for exchange for much less then a new unit.

If it was an older vehicle, my personal car, I'd just pull the connector off the motor, seal it up water tight and live with the light or tape it over. I drove for decades without ABS and traction control. :)

Yeah, short of dropping big bucks there's no easy quick fix. Even going with a new oem part, I'm sure they will have to order one. Now days when repairing my own (and the family's cars :(), once a problem is diagnosed I spend a whole lot more time reading repair manuals, researching and searching parts sources looking for the best option as far as availability vs price then I do the actual time repairing.

When I worked on the line it was diagnose, list parts needed and let the parts dept sort all that stuff out while I went on to another job. Any dealership I worked in, during my interview the deal had to include I'd have two lifts in my work bay, no way I was going to stand around waiting for parts and approval, move onto another job, time is money! ;) I miss those days, I really enjoyed working on cars. Now days it's just a pain in the neck and back, literally. The pleasure has turned to dread. :(

Hope you find a quick and inexpensive fix tibs, wish I was more help. :)

You can get a code reader for about $35 or less and read or reset the codes yourself, Tibs.

I recently saw some readers that would with laptops or tablets for less then that on Amazon, I think some were even Bluetooth, there is quit a few listed. For a little more money I think some let you do things like active tests and freeze frame data. I'm waiting to see more reviews on some of the better ones, I have a $50 reader that I've used for years, it would be really nice to be able to run tests, and freeze frame is a real time saver for intermittent problems, without it your just guessing.

Intermittent problems are the worst! I chased after an interment shifting problem with my wife's last LeSabre, finally found a loose pin connector at the big firewall junction block, wire ran down to one of the shift solenoids in the transmission. I spent hours and hours over the span of weeks chasing it, every time I tested all the connections it all showed good. I was pulling my hair out, my wife was loosing faith in me :( and she was making damn sure I heard about it every day!:-x

Yeah, buddy!

My (fill in the blank) doesn't work occasionally.
Is it working right now?
Yes.
Sigh.....

Compound that in my line of work with the fact it can sometimes be something on the Utility company's end that I can't touch.

Its a daily nemesis in my factory, often having to do with Profibus communications, but more often to do with "Operation Error", though never admitted to.

i don't think the regular ones read abs codes. the mechanic tried first with his go-to reader but had to pull out the bigger snap-on contraption to get the code :?:
