Ever have one of those days?
Wow that is rough. I must have like a dozen SSD drives in use today. My oldest ones are 11 years old now. And only one ever failed. And I thought everything on it was permanently gone. Nothing important on it, just the idea of installing everything again from scratch would have been a pain. But I left it powered up for 90 minutes on the work bench and got busy with something else. Normally I would have powered it down and tossed it in the recycle bin. But I got a crazy idea to try it once more before doing so. And I'll be damned, it worked perfectly. I repeated experiments and if warmed up, always worked. When cold, never. But it still ended up in the recycle bin.

I'm pretty sure all of my SSDs are either Samsung or Kingston. I might have three Intel SSDs too, as I am not sure. I used to be paranoid about writing to a SSD too much. As lots of writing shortens their life. But one day I decided to do some calculations. And most of my SSDs under normal use couldn't use up all of its writes in 50 years. This Kingston on this machine has pretty much been running 24/7 for the past 4 years. And it reports it only has 97% of its life left. This is working out to a lifespan of about 100 years. Me worry?

Sitting down, facing forward.
When I worked in IT I was responsible for backup of all the servers, Netware, NT and Linux. I know all about backup systems, ran "The Tower of Hanoi" for extra safety. I know better than to assume nothing will ever fail, but at home we tend to get complacent about backups. I was vacillating between cloud backup and adding NAS and backup software. After considering the costs and headaches involved cloud seems like a reasonable solution, I guess. It's playing havoc with my bandwidth though.

I am starting to wonder if it is frost blocking the vents in the fridge. I had a look at the back, pulled the bottom plate and cleaned out some dust, but everything was running fine back there. It's definitely related to getting cold air from the freezer to the fridge section and it's a bottom freezer. I'm going to empty it out and leave it unplugged overnight and give it a shot in the morning, just to see. Now, the question becomes if it's not that simple is it worth repairing it or just get a new one. It's about ten years old, and shows a test date of 2002 which makes it a lot older, so it's a crap shoot.

Compared the the overhead of Windows, Netware is a very sleek, clean, easily managed product, at least from my viewpoint which is, granted, almost fifteen years out of date. My favorite story was when we tested mirror servers on both OSes. The Netware users never knew we had just, literally, unplugged the primary server. When the Windows group unplugged theirs, it took a full 24 hours to recover and get back in production. Work loads were almost the same in terms of users and open files at the time of the forced failures.

I throttled the bandwidth use back on the backup software. Now I can, at least, use the webz again. I'll crank it back up just before I hit the sheets.

I think I still have a Netware manual in the attic, Version .01. Novell gave it to me and it was run off a copier..... I use a My Cloud 3TB and an USB 3.0 attached IcyDock with standard WD Blue disk, One 4 TB, One 1TB. That seems to work fine on my home network for backing up everything from XP to W10. Set the schedules and let them run. Thankfully only used to restore a handful of times. Never had to do a fully bare metal restore however. Need to find that boot disk now that I think of it .....

Can you use NiFe52 with TC?

NiFe52 alloy has a little lower ohms/ft. than Ti but a higher TCR value. Ti=.00366, NiFe52=.00407. You probably already know that both higher ohms per lineal foot and higher TCR value wires work to our advantage for TC accuracy. Mathematically though a % change in TCR has more impact on TC accuracy than does the same % change in ohms/ft. So not only is it at least as accurate as Ti it's also safe to dry burn. Win-win!
If you're interested I get my NiFe52 alloy in 25 awg from zivipf out of Germany; it's listed as NiFe48 on their site.

Note: As with SS430 NiFe alloys will permanently rise in res and fall in TCR if repeatedly dry burned at bright red/orange temps. A dull red glow is all that's required for dry burning coils of any metallurgical type (that can be dry burned).

NiFe52 alloy Longevity: I've had the same two NiFe52 coils in my Aromamizer V1 for well over a year now vaping around 8ml every evening.

Anyone know of a cheap board/module I can connect a 3s lipo to and make my own USB power bank for a backup power supply for my cell phone or tell me what to search for? Got lot's of spare lipo's, rather make one then buy one, I can throw it in a hammond box, got a few spare of those too.

Got word my music from my stereo system in the shop is annoying the neighbors.... My compressor and air tools drown out the music but it's the music they complained about.... So I've put all my music on my cell phone and have been using earbuds, now I can ruin my ears and not bother anyone. [emoji14]

Where's my air hammer, got some panels that need straightening...... [emoji23]
Willy I just use one of these with the regular USB wires. It's decent enough to work. It's also what I use to charge all my normal (non wireless charging) USB stuff. It's got a chip in there that knows when it needs 2.0a or 1.0a.

I was going to make one awhile back, was going to put it into a box with a cigarette lighter socket and use USB/cigarette lighter charger. Would charge via balance plug. Never made it though, bought a power bank/18650 charger instead.

Why not fix the problem instead of bandaiding it? Change the TCR value/curve in escribe instead. I don't even run curves on SS claptons, I just run a straight tcr value.
The problem I have with locking resistance or just using a straight TCR value is that I'm OCD about temperature control being as accurate as possible. It's already a leap of faith just using published curves. Adjusting a curve, or just using a "tinkered" value, take the accuracy to a whole new level of inaccuracy in my mind, such as it is. TC devices can be effected by .001 changes in resistance, why change, effectively, resistance willingly?
^cig that's my same problem right there, first of all its an adjusted curve already which I feel is correct for ss430, & I feel the same way about changing it with tcr to a general value.

I love nife's, NiFe52 is probably my favorite, I sometimes use it as the clapton around the 430SS core, I'd prefer zivipf ss430 though for whatever reason.

Works been killer lately, I took over after most of a different guy who lefts stuff & ended up having to put in a lot of extra time plus all the traffic & whatnot. My whole plan to move into a this place was bc we'd own it & eventually it'd be paid for & also bc it's so cheap we can work less & travel more while we're still young... Thwt hasn't happened yet unfortunately... My plan is to start informing them that I may want a permanent day or two off a week down the road & once I get everything into a manageable state around here start taking my PTO once a week of which I could probably take 90 days straight. (they probably couldn't say anything bc after a certain amount you have to use it or lose it)

No probs if that's what your comfortable with Kiba. Those curves are fun to play with in escribe but if we look at the tfr values of a steamengine curve and a straight tcr at the same temp splits it's obvious that all a curve does is slow down the ramp up time on the way to our set temp. I used to spend hours playing with curves. At some point years ago I decided to try using a linear curve (straight tcr value) and never looked back. The evolve mods don't care whether we use a curve or linear csv, they are just as accurate either way at our set temp so long as the tfr value is the same at our set temp. What I'm doing isn't for everyone but it's also not in ignorance.

I had to adjust it, the unkamen one works as-is but I think zivipf is a different metal.

But that gun is just so scaaaary! The common sense solution is to ban not only the scary gun but all pictures of scary guns and then destroy the girl's life for scaring me.
[Edit: do I need a sarcasm tag?]

I ordered a Therion BF from Health Cabin. I don't know why, but I thought they were in the states. After I completed my order, I learned they are in Hong Kong. I don't care for Therions, because swapping batteries are difficult. But this is a squonker DNA Therion, so maybe it won't be so bad. Health Cabin said they shipped it and will send the tracking number later.

Well ok and 2 1/2 weeks later they finally sent me the tracking number this morning. Being curious, I wonder if it made it to the states yet. And when I checked to see where it was, it shows it has been sitting in my mailbox for the past two days.

She has more guts then I do but then she's young, I just hope she's ready for the :censored: storm that will come from an in your face statement while standing up for your rights.... At my age, not something I'd want to bring on myself, I like peace and quite, I'll do my part behind the scenes and at the voting booth. Yeah, I know, I'm a chicken...

Bad timing. After what happen today in Texas, they'll be using her as a poster child for what's wrong and the reason why, that young gal is really going to feel the hate now. And when it has nothing to do with it, yes we need to keep them out of the wrong hands but it's what's in the mind, it's not the object.

Another sad day, prayers are needed.
