Hello all, I've been vaping on and off for a little over 2 years and exclusively vaping for 2 months and absolutely loving my newly acquired provari, I'm 23 and started smoking at 19 so I wasn't really a long time smoker and I was wondering if not having smoked as long makes it easier to switch to vaping?

The reason I ask this is because I keep on failing to get my mom to give up her cigarettes and I *really* want to convert her for her health. She is 52 and has been smoking for 34 years and I have given her test puffs off my kgo and provari and she hacks and coughs up her lungs after the first 2 or so drags and refuses to touch them after that. Why is this the case? I mean.. my very first drag from an ecig was slightly harsh and made me cough a bit but the 2nd one and onward was just great and smooth. Why is the same exact vapor giving her such fits? I would like some input from others who have had similar experiences or other people who have smoked as long as my mom has and would also love some tips on converting her from the stinkies.

Thanks for reading ~ Gato

Did you tell your mom that vaping is a mouth draw ie. not directly into the lungs like an analog. Or maybe your juices are just too strong or your Provari cranked up too high... or maybe your juice tastes horrible to her. Is she interested in vaping or are you pushing her?
How about getting a cute mini battery, with an atty and a cute drip tip and a whole lot of small sample gourmet juices and help her to try them out by dripping. Who knows you may strike gold.
By the way, I smoked for about 30 years and I did it, there are hundreds if not thousands of people here who have smoked for a VERY long time, (someone I saw here) smoked for over 50 years and so did his wife. They both started vaping.

Thank you for your response dragonbone, I did not think to mention the mouth draw instead of direct to lungs draw, I think because even when I smoked analogs I never did a direct draw, cause vaping came very natural to me from the get go, atleast the inhalation part did, the only difference I found was the amount of time I needed to drag. the juice she tried was an old standard dekang tobacco flavor 24 mg nicotine but I also have some 11 mg ryu and 16 mg blueberry I could try with her.

I wouldn't say I"m "pushing" her into it but more like.. pleafully urging her, I did have to tell her about it in the first place otherwise she may never have even heard of them because she isn't really a technically saavy person. I had my provari down to 3.8 volts on a boge 2 ohm carto and she also tried my kgo with the stock 2 ohm atty and she said both were too harsh. I will mention to her next time that she needs to do a longer, mouth draw instead of a direct to lung draw.

I must be the most backward person... I mouth draw on regular cigs, did for 20+ years. I only did direct-lung draw on the illegal herbal type stuff (back in the day, of course).
With vaping, I start in the mouth and switch to direct to lungs midway in a vape.

But, back to your mom... try to tempt her with flavors like coffee, metholated fruit, baked goods. I find there isn't a tobacco taste that does it for me at all. Menthol is great, but mixed with fruit it is awesome (never would have thought that when I was smoking). And she might want something ciggie-like just to help with conversion, a 510 battery with a standard res cartomizer might feel more familiar?

even though i have smoked 49 years , I don't think I have ever drawn the smoke into my lungs without filling my mouth first and then inhaling. My body just doen't like sucking something straight into my lungs unless it is air.

The juice may make a difference to her.

What cigs does she smoke?

For myself I haven't started vaping other than a test run of some not so good disposables, to see if I was willing to change over.
It will work. Impatiently waiting the arrival of my Volt.

I know for my self , at least to begin with, I want to keep the habit as much the way it was when smoking tobacco.
A simple e-cig that is about the same as a manufactured cig.

The other question is does she want to quit. Not her feeling bad/shame because of all the reported health issues and things that seem to enjoy badgering tobacco smokers.

It has taken me a while to be willing.
When I realized I really wasn't willing and saw no need. I started praying for the willingness to stop smoking tobacco and in the last month that willingness has arrived. Took me a couple years to be willing, but hey I am now.

I have a nephew whos mother was a heavy drug user, she got off that. When she started to try and quit, she said it was easier for her to quit the H/drug of her choice than it was to quit smoking.

don't push her to hard, but gently encourage her for her self .

EricHill78, LOL I dont think there's really a wrong or right way.. whatever keeps you off analogs is the right way in my book.

candimccann, I dont think its the size or look of the device that is putting her off but more so just the vapor itself making her cough up a lung for some reason. Did you have any issue with harshness when you first started vaping? As I said I only had a REALLY harsh vape on the very very first drag and after that it was bliss.

I do have a really old joye 510 manual battery I could dust off and let her try but I just dont think the battery life and the vapor production that a slim, cigarette looking pv could give would be satisfactory to my mom. a kgo I would think would be perfect because the battery life isn't bad but at the same time its not exactly a bedroom toy size lol.

She may simply not be motivated.

Likely, she's weighed the statistical probability of cigarettes shaving an unknown number of months or years off the back end of her life against the simple pleasure she gets out of them—and accepted the tradeoff.

My thinking was much the same, until draconian taxation forced me to look at alternatives. If she's not feeling the pinch, isn't suffering from COPD, emphysema or worse, convincing her to take up something she may see as goofy at best and a throat-fryer at worst will be a challenge.

As aforementioned, vaping isn't smoking; it requires a different mode of inhalation. To borrow a term from barbecuing, that technique is Low and Slow. She'll be able to sense when she's taken in enough to safely inhale—after a little practice.

But does she see a reason to?

She smokes marlboro light special blend right now.

I like the light nic idea.. maybe that will make it less harsh? I have the 11 mg ryu I could let her try. As you can see I'm also a newbie to vaping and I only have 3 juices right now, dekang tobacco 24 mg, blueberry 16 mg and ryu 11 mg. when I get my next check I will look into more juices and little sampler packages because I think the juice is the main problem for her.

Are you using a LR atomizer or cartomizer on your provari? I have vv devices but more often than not prefer 3.7 devices. Try fixing her up with the 510 and a few filled cartomizers and let her get used to it. I know that for me I needed something that was more akin to my mokes at the time I started, my main is still my Riva. If she progresses you can always upgrade later.

hth!;)

Being somewhat older and a smoker longer than your mom, I've found higher VG ratio juice more to my liking. There's less throat hit and that's just fine..:) 50/50 mixes give me the most flavor and keeps the TH down. Also a 2.5 - 3.0 ohm atty or carto on a real eGo at 3.4v may be all she needs or likes, with long soft draws.

good luck !!

My first vape doesn't count much... a Blu cig. Nothing harsh about that. It was too mild to sufficiently get me off cigarettes, though. I had to upgrade and find a good juice, then I didn't want a cigarette anymore. Smoking couldn't compete. :)

Though now, first thing in the morning, 3.7v and a resurrector is a bit too harsh the first couple vapes.

Good point politicallyincorrect, she may not be motivated to quit as far as health concerns, she has brought it up a few times to me before saying that she needs to quit because one day she may not be able to breathe but its usually a glancing remark that is forgotten by her in 10 seconds. She definitely feels the pinch of all the money she spends.. thats the angle I take when i next attempt to convert her, because vaping(after the initial cost) is a huge money saver.

vchick, I'm using boge 2.0 ohm lr cartos on my provari currently, and the atty that was on my kgo when she tried it was the stock 2.0 ohm lr. lol I'm kind of strapped for cash atm so I'll have to wait until I get my next check to get some 2.5 and 3 ohm cartos but I was already planning on it anways because I'd like to try those out myself with high 4/low 5 volt range.

Stosh, The blue berry juice I have is 80PG/20VG, is that enough VG to make it somewhat smoother? I will pick up some VG juices when I get paid.

Also, anyone happen to know what kind of voltage a joye 510 cir. 2009 puts out? I remember I got it in late 2009 so i would think its probably not a good powerful device.

A set of 510 batteries, a pack of SR Boges, and the first juice I tried that was "omg good" was Rawr Green Peach Tea w/ light menthol (I get a 50/50 mix). I tasted that and was sold. You mentioned you have 510 batts laying around anyhow.

I have a 3.7v mod now that I use at home, but my 510s are still my on-the-go vape (though I use LR cartos now, SR is just so lacking anymore).

As an aside, Virgin Vapor has mostly VG juices. Quite mild and smooth (first time I tried them I wasn't sure my carto was firing because I couldn't feel anything). She sells 15 cartos (mix and match resistances) and a 3ml sample of juice for like $20. Not a bad bundle.
