Big game tonight! And I have the perfect vape to go with it :) seriously loving this .5mm ribbon wire. First 3 people to PM me...I'll send you a freebie strand of this wire! (US only). Include your name and address and whether you'd prefer to get the .8mm instead :)

EDIT: I already have 4 people who messaged me. Not sending any more freebies at this time.

yep... can't deny the medieval feel to it :)! and that's pretty much how it looks like while I'm wrapping that crazy wire on it with your method...

so the "reservoir" section is bit over 4mm, the wick hole section is slightly bigger than a 3/32. So after a tank here's my conclusion about the ZAU and this method.
The wicking: really great. That reservoir does not get dry, juice flow is really good. With a 1/8, the ZAU would be suffocated after a couple of draws...
The vape: not so great for me. That monster coil here amounts to a tiny .8ohm. I expected almost instant gratification but the lag time on this one is like 4 or 5 long puffs before I can start getting something decent. So I'm probably gonna have to trim the reservoir back to a 1/8ish.
So namvet, I get it about the lag time, I think 1/8 is the limit unless the reservoir is drilled in the middle to remove the heat sink.
Now about the tank trim, I wouldn't do it on a DID or AC9 setup, there's no real need for it as the air flow is already great. On an atty like the ZAU where the air flow is really bad, it's indispensable...
thanks guys for all the ideas!

What does this mean? ZAP owners are interested :)
I have the ZAP, wickhole is 1/8, airhole ... an 18ga syringe fits, 16 no. Drilling it out is a no-go because it's also too tight up against the center post's threading.

Will shave to 1/8 in tank, 7/64 through wickhole, 9/64 or 5/32 above. I can get a coil hand-wrap on those specs quite a bit tighter.

Seems the 30 Kanthal reacts differently than the 25 ga. Currently I have my AGA-T2 (4mm bore) ceramic wick wrapped at 11/64 and it's hauling ... bigtime, no heatsink effects, vape delay the same as the 1/8 CF-2000 wicks. The pull & volume of the vape is nearly equal to that of 28ga on ss plus way better flavor. The best vape so far. No tipping even with only 1/4 tank left, bridged by the reservoir.

I was going to leave my ZAP as is on 28ga SS because the vape is just so darn good with flavorless. But I've changed my mind since. So far I haven't been sorry taking out any perfectly workable SS setup and moving over to ceramic. In every case it has turned out for the better.

DSmooch do you think that if you drilled a hole down the center of the top of the wick perhaps 1mm or so down to the length of the coil depth then perhaps the heating would be quick and the 1mm hole would hold enough of a reservoir of juice to make a difference, just thinking out loud here
i'm sure it would help. maybe more than a mm would be needed to get rid of the mass. but I'm definitely not equipped to do that kind of thing!

Today I got the new wicks from tank and they are great! They seem much more accurate and VERY porous. The surface is nice and open and they wick beautifully. I put a new 1/8" wick in the did and tried the EHW wrap with 0.5 ribbon and it went quite well. At one point I wanted to undo one of the coils and that sucker was stuck on the wick like it was welded. Came out at 1.4 ohms and I have the Provari ramped up to 4.5V at at the moment, chain vaping and no dry hits at all. Amazing. No break in, sucking on some Hang Seng coffee flavor and it tastes great. Very happy with this new batch. Picked up 6 of the last 3/32" wicks as well and had no idea how small these things really are. Looks like lead for a pencil :). Have to nail my courage to the sticking place to try and coil one of these, scary thin. Happy, addicted ceramic user here. It just does not get any better than this.

I've made DIY wicks so they just fit through a .125" (1/8") hole and other just slip through a .120" hole. When used in a ZAP i think the slightly thinner ones work better.

Been offline for a couple of days...traveling and vapin in the Big Easy. So much going on here in this thread (couple of pages of posts), I need to catch up this weekend. So are we going hollow wick, bigger, tapered, reverse tapered? All of the above? any conclusions on ribbon vs round?

I think SteveW hit on something here with the new wicks. They seem a bit lighter/more porous than the FS.

Back to Pat O'Briens.....

I ordered some from tank over a month ago. still nothing... I hope I get some of those. vap told me a while back that they were doing some upgrades, so SteveW is probably not imagining things :)
getting used to the ribbon here, and its so safe! I just recoiled my ZAU with it after I trimmed my medieval wick a bit. at last... enjoying my ZAU!

Jury seems to still be out on what works best, but here's the Readers Digest version:

I think most of the trials with the different shaped wicks seem to be coming to the same conclusion: The ceramics definitely wick, the shape & configuration don't have a lot to do with it. Some appear to work better than others, but after they break in, they all seem to keep up....As long as the wicking capabilities keep up with YOUR demands - no need to go further. I haven't seen anyone complaining about dry hits from them in quite some time.

I think right now the biggest issue is the "Heat Sink" effect of the larger diameter ceramics (Vape-lag). The smaller diameter wicks seem less affected by it than the mega-wicks, but the trade-off is the fragility of the thinner wicks. Its a major drawback. You can also generally get more wraps on a thinner wick (and hit your desired Ω rating) which helps with generating better flavors.

I personally like the ribbon Kanthal myself for the same reason; takes a wrap or two more to hit the same Ω rating (better wick coverage). I seem to be getting better flavor from the ribbon compared to round wire.

My take at the moment is that a robust small diameter wick (or a larger wick with LOW MASS) would be ideal. I still haven't tried the Birdcage wick, but I think that has some major potential in the "Big Wick" area ...

Just my observations, and I may be way off, but everyone's perspective is different. Please chime in if you feel differently....

Spot on.

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet and I have kind of thought of lately is the concept of air vacuum / liquid suction through the wick.
Most here are aware that you need airflow with these wicks thus you get much better results with the fill screw off.
When you puff and the fill screw is off, you create a vacuum effect with air pressure traveling through the fill hole and creating a suction force that will drag the juice along the wick and upwards to the active coil.
The more juice you can feed the coil per second, the more vapor.
Most people initially approached this by switching to ever larger wicks, but as the wicking results didn't meet initial expectations, people have been innovating wick designs to aid the flow of juice from bottom to top.
Surprisingly, many have noticed better results with the tiny 3/32 wicks than with any larger sizes. Some people have suggested this is because no juice is traveling within the wick and only along the surface. I think that's impossible, otherwise you wouldn't be able to wick vertically with a tight wrap of .8mm ribbon as in the video I uploaded previously.
I think these wicks are delivering juice both through capillary action and flow along the surface, but something that hasn't been considered yet (at least from what I've been able to read) is the fact that for the human lung it will be much easier to suction juice through/along a 3/32 wick than through a 1/8 wick or even larger. I haven't tried or tested a hollow, straw-like wick but I'm afraid that would bring some problems such as easy wick breaking and flooding inside the atomizer.

I could be wrong, but it's definitely something to consider when making new wick shapes and designs.

So is everyone here making their own wicks or is there a supplier I don't know about? (I knew about the FC-2000 wicks but they were discontinued?)

I have a Cobra atty so all this talk of 3/32 wicks (largest that will fit in my 2.5mm wick hole without modding) and the recent SS CR(IV)/CR(V) mess has me ready to finally take the plunge and try (break) some ceramic wicks. :p

There are now 7/64 being sold. That is the smallest they make now. Do you have a true Cobra or a clone? If it is a clone, I would drill it out to 1/8".

Tankecigs are supplying but the 3/32" are being discontinued.

That doesn't hold true at all for a 30ga Kanthal wrap, otherwise I would have never posted about it in the first place. In fact there is no comparison between the 1/8 and 4mm modified wick whatsoever ... the latter far more powerful in every respect than the former. So other factors do come into being that may affect these setups. For instance, I have no more heat sink effect on 1/8 than on 11/64 whereas other setups do. So, not that black & white.
