penny, I was going to say - worst case you've got a chap who's clearly skilled with the tools in the house. When you do it, do a good couple of feet of it to minimize the amount of the twisting process you have to go through while experimenting with building (knowing you, you'll likely go through a fare few coils in rapid succesion as you learn all about it).

Twisted coils have some real advantages - many swear by them.

Thank you very much for the info Reign, much appreciated. I did watch that vid and it doesn't look as hard as I'd imagined. I'll have to show it to hubs and see if he can get me set up so I can try this out.

It's not hard at all worst part for me was finding a chuck that could grip such a small gauge wire.

No I skipped the water cooled it was a while ago and I was budget restricted. But had 4 120mm fans with a controller and a temp. monitor, stayed really cool pushing Crysis to the limits. :)

Ah Crysis. Reminds of my years at EA games. Still have the last RIG I built back then.

That's awesome! I feel like a celeb talking with someone in the gaming industry. Seven degrees of separation and all that. Can't wait for Ubisoft's drop on Tuesday, AC is my favorite series gotta make it through this vape summit with enough cash for Unity and Rogue. :D

If I could go back in time I know what I would have studied my .... off to get into, but will just be happy enjoying all their work.

Edit: <3 that SLI setup in there.

I'm definitely interested and have to try it at least once so I can see for myself what it's all about. Your tip is a handy one and will probably save me a bit of frustration later so thank you!

Not as glamorous as it might appears. I worked the help desk but it had it's advantages. ;)

Hah, the Crytek boys were wack. Crazy bunch of eastern europeans. They used to have to bring a custom jalopy pc to demo the game for E3 - no consumer box could run it (it was only just before finaling that they got the min specs down to something a citizen could actually buy).

I was a halo fan then in the last few years have switched over to COD (when BO dropped). Then MW 3. Liked BF 2 and 3 but then BO 2 ruined that for me. Now my boys are jonesin for the latest COD release. It's been hard saying no too :)

Once I play a game I'm not backwards compatible and once I play a franchise I take forever to switch back to controller configs between others. That's why I stopped halo and just stick with COD. But we did do a fair share of halo 4 for a while.

Sucks getting old. My 13 year old can go between games / controller configs (even use mine where Y is inverted) and decimate.

We have and played crysis 2 for a while so BF 2 was a familiar level of graphic intensity and highly realistic gameplay. My hats off to yall who developed the crytek engine.

I just wish all games used EXACTLY the same controller configs :)

I know it's a rough and sometimes thankless job but as a gamer it would've been a dream come true. If I could go back I would trade in a welders mask for a headset and keyboard any day. :)

The only downside would be the stories I have heard about it making you not want play in your spare time but with I am not sure that could happen. I even enjoy the games that I don't like for what they are.

Edit: I have gotten away from shooters but did just hit the midnight release of COD: AW for my boys they were stoked to get it on day zero with the bonus xp. Sorry to hijack about games. I am bad about that.

it was fun for awhile but had to deal with some silly questions from newbies. I was one of the moderators of our Far Cry2 game site and actually won a gaming laptop on the UK version of FC2 Hunt the Jackal CONTEST........... off the Brits. :) The company made us our own gaming signatures.

I introduced this DIY tension hand winder to ECF about 6 months ago. The concept is to wrap the wire directly from the spool by rotating the tool in one hand while holding the wire spool in the other. Great for controlling tension and bias and elliminates the need to unwrap irregular starter winds. Check out my blog for features, fabrication and usage instructions.

I sent a number of these out to Mac, SXD and others. Excellent feedback so far.

My latest DIY revision includes interchangeable mandrels from 1mm-3mm and a mandrel storage compartment. Will be blogging instructions for this one soon too.

Hey big, mornin'. Short answer is temperature. That's what we're after. And resistance is both the measure and the target. So tension winding is the means to get us there as quickly as possible in practical terms. It's a method and a standard used in the communications and electrical industry since the science began. I didn't dream this up. I was the kinda kid that sat around and listened to the stories of older wiser people than myself on what life used to be like.

Kanthal is comprised of a unique metal alloy. When pulsed electrically (heated) it develops a uniform alumina oxide layer which insulates the wire against shorting. Both direct contact shorts and thermal shorts, their equivalent (hot spots or segments). Both raise resistance making the wire substantially hotter and scorching our lungs with resulting dry hits.

The reasons I've better explored with many other postings on resistance and tension. And here's a recent example, The Pin Vise and "Stickyness".

Tensioning the wire with a kind of shaped memory creates the ideal relationship of turns for the uniform development of that oxide layer which is at the heart of a great vape. While we can do it by external force the hazards of damaging the wire with impurities, scorching or mangling of the geometry is far greater. I spent time researching the feasibility of this adaptation for the important purpose of enabling folks to achieve a simple electrical baseline quickly with minimal tools and instruction.

It's what we need to gauge everything else that we do. When we get it right and it just works.

Good luck big.

:)
