We're supposed to get a front mover through here this evening, it's about 80 degrees right now...

My wife and I just spent most of the morning trying to get our daughter to think about her school paper. She seems prone to statements like, "The sky is colored blue, so the sky is blue." So much for being the daughter of a writer... Oh well, it's only fifth grade, right?

Well I laid down for a bit ..but doesn't seem like it did much good. Hope I sleep better tonight.
Life is challenging enuf without having to do it feeling tired ..but then for many of us, that is our lot.
48* out there now..whoo-hoo Heat Wave!
@CountBoredom what is the theme of your daughter's paper? Is it factual non-fiction/ investigative...or something free form creative fiction/ fantasy? From just the statement "The sky is blue" ...is sounds like she is very visual ...a realist ...but a very creative realist ....and also a bit of a rebel (5th grader, ah yes.. ) ... ..who wants to be free to perceive , express and experience the world on her own terms.
Of course...not knowing her..that could be me I'm talking about :D

She is supposed to choose an object in a fiction book that symbolizes one of the book's themes (the "sky is blue" example was just that--an example). Separating theme from plot is only one part of her problem... the other is actually drawing the link between the object she chose (Thor's hammer) and the theme (overcoming one's mistakes). So, she comes up with sentences such as "They go on an adventure because they need to find the hammer. Without the hammer, they wouldn't have gone on the adventure." And, in conclusion, "The hammer is important to the story. By using courage, [the main character] learns to conquer his fear and fix his mistake."

Since we don't want to write the paper for her, my wife and I would ask questions, such as, "What role does the hammer play in allowing the character to confront his fear?" at which point she says that they wouldn't have gone on the adventure if it weren't for the hammer... And round and round it went until she began to understand, at least in part--I don't have any illusions that her paper will be the best in the class.

@CountBoredom ...wow..glad I went thru school when I did...That sounds more like something I would have had to write for that tough English teacher in 10th grade ...who NEVER gave out A's :D I can remember my brother and SIL spending many many nights at the kitchen table with my nephew and his homework. He's in his first year of college now, so somewhere along the line he really was listening (so take heart ) :)

Welcome back anjel!! I missed you!

@Fuzzy Thunderbear WOW! You guys have snow already!! I'm thinking living in the south has its advantages.

Got some health issues going on plus some work drama that's threatening to drive me nuts(not that it's a far stretch) so any good thoughts would be most appreciated.

Your pics are makin' me cold. Stay warm!

Sorry, ladies, if those pics were misleading (and Katz too). Those were past winters here. Temps are below freezing already this year, but luckily, the snow has not started yet (at least not the kind that stays here once it falls) and I am trying to build a psychic shield that will help the bad stuff to find someplace else to be this year. I'm too old and too tired to fight all that white crap, yet cannot afford (yet) to move to someplace warmer. When the time is right, we will be able to relocate.

This one was several years back, before the snow blower or the Bobcat came to live with us. In spite of the blue sky and sunshine, this day of shoveling was when I got the frostbite and resultant Reynaud's syndrome. But I had to do it because the snow had just gotten deep enough to cover that three-foot fence and our dogs could simply walk over the fences and be out on the highway, which, to me, was an unacceptable situation. I will do whatever I have to in order to protect my critters.
