Every time I hear someone say they hate their ISP, I have to laugh. Mist people have choices... we live in the rural pieces parts of the Arkansas Ozarks. The kind of place where the curves are so tight, if you look real close, you can see your tail lights in your rear view mirror. The kind of place where many people still use - and prefer - outhouses to indoor plumbing. Rural, I tell you...

We like it. Less traffic, lower crime rate, friendly people. They even stop at crosswalks and let you cross.

But this means we have 1 choice for DSL. Happens to also be the phone company and the cable company. They can charge what they want and you'll take it or go without.

That's not entirely true...

We could go satellite, but they have put caps on that and it would severely limit my time online. We use Netflix, so that would be out for sure...

The cell signal is spotty out here. We have 30 GB / month, but we'd run through that pretty quick even IF we could get reasonable signal at home... which we can't.

There's no such thing as line of sight out here. Not unless the access point is within 500 yards. Too hilly and twisty turny.

For basic phone - no long distance - and DSL at 6 Mbps (theoretical... we rarely see that... especially at peak times or when it's raining) we're paying $91 per month.

Why is no competition funny?
I'm inner city. It's an agreement with the state to not have competition. It's too slow for Netflix and a lot of other things. Even Gmail is text only. That's "premium". I don't think I'd mind so much if there was nature to look at.

It came back on tonight. Sometimes it's out for 4 days. I have unlimited cell data but I'm close enough to the border that's restricted to 3G. They don't want that to accediently slip across I guess.

Google fiber is trying to get in and there's been several attempts by cities to put in their own networks, ending up contested, advertising that's "gov't takeover". The only reason it's not build out here is that most of the wealth is outside of the city. It hurts property values too.

Satellite is worthless for internet, although a lot of folks get it for TV around here. I can use my phone for tv with my data plan. I know people without either due to local pricing. My neighbor has the bundle, phone which is very limited, min internet and expanded cable with no premium channels for $19O/month. That's extreme IMO. Dropping any one of those and he ends up paying more. I was going to help him scale it back because he really can't afford it. I've tossed figures and I'm not sure if I can. I tried to help someone else find a decent phone plan with data for tv and wasn't successful. I'd be sunk without mine. I know that sounds confusing, it does to me too. It's frustrating. There's a lot of people here with nothing because of the pricing.

Sounds a lot like where I live. Only Frontier and we only get 1.6mbps.
 I'm sorry.

Up until the past month or so, there were only two choices for internet where I live. AT&T and Comcast. Both only offer 3mbs and AT&T was cheaper, so that's what I currently have. Sonic is a local company offering 10mbs for the same cost, which is $40/month, but customers are supposed to lease a router for $6.50/month. I refuse to lease a router!
However, there are SOME routers that are compatible with their system, so if the one I just bought works AND the speed is faster than 3mbs, I'll be making the switch. :thumb:

Good Night / G'Mornin' and Good Vibes Tree Fam!

Hey - Have "You" ever thought that being as competent as you are - is why they don't do their J O B . . . Plus the fact that they could also be waiting to see how "You" will react . . . Just a thought . . .

Could be.
Seeing too many that do as little as possible and always saying "That's not my job." Problem is that it is their job and with working for the gubernant often times there are no repercussions when they don't do it.

Had no response from anyone when I went in this morning. Tried calling people in San Diego and only got voice mail. Eventually called someone at the local HR - he agreed that I was right and San Diego had screwed the pooch. He called someone else in San Diego and I shortly had an email from one of the people working it - they said they would look at it and fix if needed. What do they mean "if"? They won't admit their wrong even when slapped in the face with it. Asked for a time guesstimate on how long it would take and of course no response. It's a 10 minute job to make the corrections and send.

I truly believe that if I was within small arms range they would get their butts in gear.

No problem, a fan on me every single night, the bedroom can get into the 40's easy overnight while sleeping. Heavy duty fan, it moves a lot of air.
