E. 1. 5.
The hallway was as cold almost inside as outside, with the open balconies on both sides of the hall. The only difference was the amount of wind that the walls protected them from. Jaki and Ted went down the steps and back to the door. Jaki reached for the door, and paused, she stood back and said. "I know how much you like to do this, whatever, do it."
Ted smiled and went just beside Jaki and grabbed the doorknob, he turned it and opened the door while smiling. Jaki turned her eyes a little and then quickly went outside, the wind hitting them right in the face as they excited the building. The door shut behind them as Jaki quickly made it to the passenger side and got in as fast as she could. "Could you turn on the heater just a little?" she asked as Ted got in and shut his door after she had.
"Sure I can do that." as he pulled the keys from his jacket pocket. While Ted entered the keys into the ignition, Jaki took her right hand and opened the glove box. Inside she took out a small notebook and a fine point pen, she began to write and mumble at the same time. "Suuzzy Feiilds. BOb Willliis." Ted had the keys in and turned on the car, he reached over and grabbed the controls and turned it to heat, and then to the floor and facing forward, and then turned it on the 2nd level up. The engine was still warm from driving and the heat came out quickly. "Thank you.... Saantooroos." Ted turned on the radio and then turned it way down, he started to skim
through the channels looking for something else.
Jaki stood 5'9" was in good health and exercised, sleek and fast. She excelled quickly, with her college background and desire to be the best, it only took Ted two months to bicker and fight with the higher ups to get her on his team. At a very young age of 25 she was way above the class, her dark brown hair was so dark it was almost black, her Italian and Asian Indian heritage gave her skin just a hint of a tint. Today she decided to put her hair back and had it in a ponytail, it came back six inches, and was almost perfectly straight.
A very smooth face, with dark eyebrows, and almost unnoticeable cheekbones that highlighted her dark brown eyes and face. She caught the attention of many men, and for a long time, and she did not like it. "Giirrarrd.." Ted had stopped the radio on a modern rock station but kept it low, so that Jaki could finish concentrating and writing it all down.
Ted was taller than Jaki at 6'3" and older at 35 years of age, dirty blonde hair that some said showed a few whites hairs already and he denied completely. Married for 16 years, and one daughter who was 15 years old. He was big enough to have played linebacker in college, full figured his arms and chest were well defined. He had been on the force for eleven years, Jaki transferred from another department and was about to hit her third year. His jaw was wide and strong, with dark blue eyes, he had to fend off woman as well.
"Thank you." Jaki said as she set the notebook down on her leg, still holding it with her left hand. Ted said. "I was thinking of something like modern rock? What do you think?" Jaki said "No, I think I want something a little harder." Ted chuckled silently with a smile and looked over at her with his eyebrows up. "In one of those moods huh?" Jaki looked up just a little and cocked her head up and grinned. Ted turned the channel and asked at the same time. "So where to first?" Jaki said "I think we should go to Bob's work." she let the notebook go and picked up her coffee cup from the car's cup holder, and began sipping.
"I agree." Ted replied, he turned the sound up a little so it could be heard. Metallica's The Unforgiven II was playing. Ted put the car in reverse and looked back, he backed up a little and then put it in drive. He gave it a little extra gas than was needed, Jaki put the cup in her right hand and with her left turned the music up just a hair more, and the heat down one notch. She sat back and thought, while drinking more coffee.
Ted asked, "Could you hand me the leftover sandwich please?" Jaki came out of thought and still understood, she reached over and grabbed the bag. While taking out the sandwich she said. "We need to have the office look up Suzy's neighbor Betty, we did not get her last name, and just do a simple background check." She handed the sandwich to Ted, and he took a big bite, while waiting to turn left. Jaki took out her phone and swiped it to contacts. She hit a few buttons and put the phone to her ear.
Ted finally was able to turn left as the traffic cleared, and took another quick bite. Jaki said. "Hey Chris, this is Jaki, I need a favor... Uh huh, it is in relation to the case... Okay there is a lady named Betty who lives at 3180 Master St., the apartment complex, and it is room 3A...... Thanks Chris." Jaki took the phone down and ended the call, she returned the phone back to the main screen. "So do we need to go back out to the range sometime soon?" asked Jaki breaking the silence. "Yeah, that should be fine, it has been a little while." Ted replied while watching the road, he put the last of the sandwich in his mouth and chewed it up. "Umm, I needed something in my stomach. You going to eat?"
Jaki said. "The sandwich is cold, so I do not want it." she was opening a map app to verify the job location, and Ted quickly said. "See we should have just sat there and ate until we were done, we will find you something." Bob's job was a straight shot down, seven blocks, and Suzy's old job location was right next door. It took them only a few minutes to make it to Santoro's, and Ted parked the car on the opposite side of the street.
Jaki got out and stepped on the sidewalk as Ted waited a moment to open his door, they were closer to the University, and there were more student drivers. Ted finally decided it was safe and opened the door to get out, Jaki moved around the car, so that as Ted shut the door they were both walking across the street at the same time. They came to the main doors, and Jaki was closer, so she grabbed the door handle and pulled the door out towards them. Ted said "Thank you." and walked inside grabbing the next door. Jaki walked in just as he opened the second, and she turned her head to him and smiled.
Ted laughed just a little and Jaki could hear him, she continued to walk forward to the counter. There was no hesitation in her step, and Ted came in behind her, only two steps behind. "Yes, can I help you?" said a female secretary, she was fairly old, and had probably been with the company for years. She looked possibly Spanish and had black and white hair, as her age was showing
through. "Yes maim, this is Detective Lancaster and I am Detective Grimes." Jaki said as she and Ted started to show their badges. "We are in an ongoing investigation, and need some information about an employee that works here."
The woman behind the counter, did not budge one bit, calmly she said. "I will have to go get one of the manager's, it will be just a few minutes." She looked at them both, and Jaki kind of smiled, while Ted smiled big and said. "Thank you very much, we will wait right here."
