E. 1. 9.

Ted drove the interceptor back over the river, it took them about fifteen minutes to get to the building, the 18th precinct, on Pine street and South 5th street. Ted pulled into the parking area and to the rear of the building, and put the vehicle in park; as he turned off the car and unbuckled Jaki was already out and going to the rear door of the building.

She took out her badge, and produced a card inside from it, she swiped it through the security machine outside and there was a buzz. Jaki opened the door and went inside, she held it for Ted who was coming quickly behind her, he went inside and allowed the door to close. The wall was covered with small lockers and each door was numbered.

Ted and Jaki each put a key in one and opened the small doors and put their respective firearm inside. Ted was closer to the next door and pushed a button, to get the attention of the guard inside, a camera faced the door and another buzz could be heard, Ted grabbed the door and opened it allowing Jaki to go in first. "Thank you." she said as she went into the main area and started for her desk.

The two went past many rows of desks and computers, the smell was of a lemon disinfectant, someone had a cinnamon candle burning somewhere. "Oh those smells do not mix well." Jaki said as she came to her desk and sat down, Ted went around the desks and sat across from her, the computers were back to back. Jaki moved her mouse and the screen lit up, it awaited a password which she entered quickly and had access to the computer.

Ted was just getting into his computer when a voice was heard. "Hey Ted, can I have a minute?" Ted looked over and Theodore was just outside the door to his personal office. "Sure captain." Ted got back up and walked towards Theodore, who turned and went back into his room. "Please take a seat. So what have you been able to find out?" Theodore was older, his hair thinning and almost all white, a few streaks of black.

Ted sat down in the chair nearest the door and responded. "We have not found anything yet, so far no one has anything for us that is helpful." Ted adjusted in the chair and Theodore, turned the volume down on the small TV in his office, he said. "The weatherman got it wrong again, a cold front came in." Ted laughed a little and said. "No kidding, it got colder all day long, must be getting near freezing." Theodore responded. "No not yet, they say it should not freeze for a few day."

Jaki was at her desk looking at her notepad every few moments and typing away, focused a males voice said. "Hey Jaki." Jaki looked up and saw Chris standing with some paperwork in his hand. "Evening Chris, how are you?" he responded "Good thank you, I have the information you requested." he held the paperwork forward and let Jaki take it, he said. "Her name is Betty Black, she is a student at the University, no priors and a decent credit score."

Jaki took the paperwork from Chris and just laid it on the desk, she said. "Does not surprise me." Chris' face changed and he asked. "So no luck huh?" "No." she responded as she sat back in the chair, "Any word from the coroner?" Chris adjusted his stance and said. "Yes, they did confirm the dna, it is a match, her neck was bitten into, and the arm was a combination of cutting and biting. Two officers went out to talk to the father, they said he was devastated, his wife passed a few years ago and now all he has is his son. He called his son, and the officers do not believe they are involved in any way." Jaki listened and responded. "Sounds about right, this is starting to sound like some random act."

Theodore laughed slightly, and said. "and she said I am never going to cook another pie again, just stick to the turkey and sides." Ted had asked him about Thanksgiving, Theodore followed with. "The filling was still....... okay, but the crust was burnt." he shook his head no, and Ted said. "Yeah, my wife is a better cook than I." Theodore sat back and said. "The coroner was able to do a toxicology report, he found nothing in her system, there were no signs of rape, or anything out of the ordinary.... well other than you know." He put his hands together and crossed his fingers. "I do not see anything special about this case, all the leads will be followed up and nothing will ever be found. A onetime act of violence and nothing more."

Ted sat up in his chair and said. "Did the coroner say anything about her arm and neck?" Theodore looked at him and said. "Stop that you always want to make it bigger than what it is." Ted looked at him closer and said. "They did, they confirmed there were teeth marks." Theodore did not respond and Ted watched his face. "The coroner found teeth marks didn't they?" asked Ted, Theodore was shaking his head and said. "Okay Ted, what?" Ted sat forward and said. "I think we may have a serial killer on our hands." "Good grief Ted, how could you even say that? We hear about crazy stuff all over, people losing it and doing horrible things." Theodore responded. Ted said, as he thought about past cases and things heard on the news. "Yes, but not this violent...." he was going to continue but the TV said something that caught both of their ears. "Breaking news on WPVI..."

"Oh boy, here we go." Theodore grabbed the remote and turned up the TV, two anchors sat, one a blonde woman in her thirties and a black male in possibly his forties, he in a jacket and tie, she in a white blouse. "We have received word of a gruesome attack in one of the most popular parks of the city, details after this break." said the male, the female followed. "And not just an attack, but a brutal one that may be disturbing to many, so please viewer discretion is advised."

Theodore ran his fingers through his fading hair and said. "If I find out who is leaking information...., why do they do this?" Ted responded. "Good news does not get much attention, bad news gets a lot." Ted stood up and started for the door, he knew Theodore's attention would be on the TV, and what to respond with, he grabbed the doorknob and turned it, and left the room. Jaki was still typing on her computer and heard him come out. "You know, you forgot to stop by somewhere so I could get a bite to eat."

Ted looked at his phone and touched the screen twice with his finger, to look at the time. "Oh, can you give me a minute?" Ted walked away as Jaki started to type some more, a few minutes later Ted was coming back and said. "Here you go." he was holding a pizza box, and said "Your favorite kind, supreme." Jaki smiled and grabbed the box quickly. "Thank you, I am starving!" she sat the box down and opened the lid, the cheese still melted and she pulled quickly on a piece, the cheese stretched and Jaki picked the piece up high to let the cheese in her mouth and followed up to the end of the piece and took a bite. "Oh my gosh, this is so goooood. mmmm" she quickly started to devour the slice.

Jaki was about a third of the way done, and asked Ted. "Are you going to have some?" Ted said "My wife is saving a plate of food for me at home, thanks." Jaki stopped eating and responded. "It may be a few more hours, what is a slice going to do, and it is fresh and hot." she took another bite, the cheese still hot and pulling long, she had to take her other hand and grab it off her chin. Ted adjusted in his chair and pulled up the computer after entering his password. He reached over after a moment and grabbed a slice, Jaki was finishing her first piece and smiled as she grabbed another.

Ted put the pizza to his mouth and took a large bite, he was moving his mouse around and started to type one handed, part of the toppings fell onto his keyboard. "Oh crap...." he quickly looked for something to help him clean it up, Jaki realized what was going on and took her Kleenex box and handed it over the computers. "Here." Ted took the box from her. "Thank you." he said with some worry in his voice, and moved quickly to get the greasy toppings out of the keys. "Oh man......"

By the time they were finished, it was a little after 9:30 in the evening, the two walked to the back doors of the building, as they came to the outside door, the cold could be felt before they even opened it. "When I get home I am going to take a six hour long hot bath." Jaki said in frustration, she liked the warmth and wondered why her parents moved so far north. "Don't drown...." Ted said as he pushed the door open. "Oh!!!" Jaki moved forward fast to her car, a fairly new red 2013 Honda Accord. She worked fast in her pockets for the key, and Ted said. "Have a good evening." He went to his old truck that he was working on, not good on gas but heavy and strong. "Good night." Jaki half way screamed as she closed her door. Ted entered the key to his truck and got in, there was an older smell, more like carpet, with some oil and grease, he entered the key and turned it on, the engine purred slightly loud, the radio still in the on position, music played instantly.
