E. 1. 10.
As expected the traffic was lighter Saturday morning, and Ted was able to make better time than on the weekdays, he made it back to precinct and there were fewer cars there as well. He drove to the rear and could see Jaki's car already parked. The inside of his truck warmed up quickly during the drive, the cab small and needing little air to do so. He turned the engine off, and as soon as he did so the cold air on the windows hovered near his skin, he grabbed the cold door handle and opened his door. The warm air spilled out quickly and the cold hit him again as he went to the security door.
Ted swiped his card and entered the first door, as it shut he hit the buzzer on the second, hearing the buzz he opened the door and went inside, the scent of the cleaning solution was gone, the smell of coffee in the air, he sipped on his coffee and walked past the desks to his, he could see Jaki already at her desk with the computer up, she heard walking and turned seeing Ted, she said. "Your late."
Ted came in blue jeans, boots and a thick button up cotton shirt, Jaki also wore blue jeans, but had on running tennis shoes, and a colorful blue t-shirt that looked new and shined a little, her hair still back. Ted responded. "We are never late on a Saturday, and it is only
three minutes after eight. Did you have a good evening, do anything fun?" Jaki spun back in her chair as Ted passed by, she replied as Ted sat down. "I played with the dog some, took that hot bath I said I would, ate and watched some TV. Nothing on really, how was your evening?"
Ted woke his computer and had entered his password, he was moving the mouse to the internet icon as he responded. "It was good thank you, the wife made potato stroganoff from scratch, it was good. We watched Star Wars and spent time together, sure could have stayed in bed this morning though." "Uh huh, I as well." replied Jaki, she took her left hand and grabbed her coffee cup, the contents had cooled and she was able to swallow fully and the cup was near empty, she stood up and walked past Ted and
three sets of desks later turned right to the wall with the creamer, sugar and coffee percolators. She took the lid off of her stainless steel cup and poured in a little sugar, and more creamer, then filled the glass back up with coffee, taking one of the small straws she stirred the contents and walked back to her desk watching the cup and allowing her peripheral vision to guide her steps.
"I have already started to look up Shelley Peterson, there are four who have that name in the city. One is 80 so I doubt she is the one we are looking for, one moved away it appears about a month ago. The third is in her mid forties, and the last in her early twenties, I think the last one is the Shelley we need to talk to." Jaki sat back down her chair, she finished stirring the coffee and
threw the straw in the small trash can to her left tucked just under her desk, she continued. "I have already pulled up her address and phone number, so we can call her."
Ted looked up from his computer and asked. "How long have you been here?" Jaki took a sip and set her cup down and looked at the clock and said. "Thirty five minutes." Ted shook his head no and said. "No way I am coming in early on a Saturday. We still need to go to Suzy's place of work and talk to them, they will be open already. That can give us some time before we call Shelley." Jaki shook her head in agreement.
The door of Theodore's office could be heard starting to open, as it swung open and Theodore came out he looked at Jaki and said. "Hard at it." he turned to Ted and said. "Good morning Ted, your late." Ted sat up a little and replied. "Good morning Captain, what are you doing here today?" Theodore responded. "You did not watch the news did you? It is all over the news now about Suzy's death, on every station, and somehow they know about the missing arm, I do not think they know about the flesh eaten away at her neck yet. I and the Sherriff are going to have a press conference later today with the reporters. The news stations just kept hyping up the story. Top story...." he said while waving his hand. "Breaking news..." while he shook his head. "We will have the meeting at ten this morning, I remember back in the day when the biggest thing we had to worry about was spending a dollar for gas, saving another few dollars for a burger and show. And that was good enough for two to eat well, and enjoy the whole evening."
Jaki smiled and said. "Did you go watch The Gold Rush? Did they have color back then, or even sound?" she started to laugh. Theodore turned to Jaki and said. "You have been around Ted too long, don't you have things to do?" he turned back to his office and as he shut the door he said loudly. "And yes there was sound back then." he slightly slammed the door. Jaki looked over at Ted and he smiled at her. "You ready to go?" Ted asked as he started to chuckle. "Yeah, let's get out of here." She stood up and took her jacket off the back of her chair, and put it on, it went down past her waist and covered the gun holster on her side.
She turned and started for the rear of the building and Ted was following shortly after, he said. "If we can get this done quickly we can go practice shooting like you suggested." Jaki made it to the inner door, and said. "That sounds good." she opened the door after the buzz sounded and went into the locker room, Ted grabbed the door and went inside as well. The two entered their keys and retrieved their firearms and placed them in their holsters. Ted grabbed the outer door and opened it, Jaki pulled the jacket around herself and huddled into it as Ted opened the door, her face cringed as the colder air hit them. "They should put in those systems that allow you to turn the cars on from inside, so that it is already warm when you get in." She started to move faster and realized she would have to wait for Ted anyway, Ted made it to the driver door and unlocked it, he said. "If you're going to pay for that, I doubt the department will." he reached in and unlocked the vehicle.
