@SLM, one thing you may want to consider is whether or not you will be forced onto a different plan. I used to be on Verizon (for a long time), but when it came around to upgrading from my last phone, I found that they would require me to upgrade my plan to something that would, in essence, double my monthly bill (it increased my data allotment beyond what my wife and I needed), as well as tack on several "new device" fees. I said no thanks, purchased two Nexus phones directly from Google, and switched to T-Mobile. My bill is about the same as before, but I get twice as much data as I had, I got two (at the time) top-of-the-line phones that do everything we want them to, and, because they were direct from Google, I also got frequent updates without having to wait for the manufacturer to "approve" them (and also no bloatware). That was about four years ago and I'm still happy (and the phones still do everything my wife and I want them to do).
