Annoying yeah. Part of me wants to get one if they come out just to see the difference in quality, but a way bigger part of me doesn't want anything to do with them.

Someone is coming out with a Spheroid clone? Crap. Well, we all knew this day would come.

Regardless of performance, I wouldn't trust clones, because one of the ways they make them cheap is by using low-grade materials. It seems a pity to leave behind the poisons of analogs only to replace them with poisons from degrading or rusting cheap metals.

I have really been surprised GP hasn't been cloned but if it was I doubt it would have the same quality defeating the point of own a GP product.

No one can clone Perseas, right? So, even if a Chi P comes out someday - we'd yet stick with him here. Team-GP's passion, dedication and magnanimity cannot be replicated.

Hi all,

I have a question I'm hoping one of you fellow GP lovers might be able to answer. I've long been a spheroid user and more recently picked up a GP paps (v2.5, standard). I love everything about this mod except the one thing I am supposed to love: The switch. It is indeed a feather touch and works beautifully and that is my problem. In real life usage, I just don't trust the thing not to fire. If there is so much as a grain of salt on the table and I set it down, odds are it will fire -- let alone if I pocket the thing while forgetting to lock it first. So, for now, every time I use it, I have to unlock/lock the switch.

So, my question: Is there a stiffer spring available for the gp paps switch? I've tried some other springs I have laying about and none of them will seem to work because the tolerances inside the switch are so precise / small.

I'll go right on loving the paps even with this issue. But if someone has a solution, this could become my every day mod. Right now it's relegated to special occasions :(

Thanks so much,
Steve.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the forum!

Every mod will fire in the pockets or on errands if stashed unlocked. We need a bit of deliberation here. The v2.5 switch is an amazing design and can be 'tad' stiffened with one of the springs which comes along. However, this was designed to be 'touch type'... as such there's a trade-off between this version and its previous iteration.

Ensuring that the bottom nut remains well tightened always gets the mod a better throw, but here we are indeed talking about micro-tolerances. Unfortunately, nothing better can be done / is available AFAIK.

I "suffered"from the same thoughts but now it's second nature to just lock it when setting it down. I actually do it with all my bottom switch mods now. It will become an accidental habit in no time.

Sadly, it's true. The spheroid is a great, affordable and fairly easy attie to get with top notch customer support. The GP team has even provided us with 3 different finishes to choose from. I don't understand why anyone would want a cloned version but here it is...

https://www.vapor-freak.de/Neu-im-Sortiment/Xplora

Interesting, at that price, it's more of an outright copy than a clone.

Of course, with the Spheroid, you get perseas & co. support and customer service, and the wonderful carnival of clowns in this thread giving off way too much advice and shooting packages of free stuff across the planet.

With the copy, you get "Achtung! Achtung! Dein Xplora ist kaputt! Schieß dem Fenster!"

A bigger part is not supporting the theft of design and supporting many many months of hard work that was done and still done for us. Support VapourArt and their families I say and always will.

I have no problem with clones. If you have a problem with a clone then toss out every piece of electronics you own, plus probably everything else in your home.

What I have a problem with are "replicas". Blatantly stealing another's work and selling it as your own for a profit. Sure, these clones are ripoffs, but they are what they are....cheaper/more affordable versions of the original, but with the tradeoff of quality/appearance. Hell, every genesis available are clones of each other. Now, when said clone crosses the bridge to a replica, stealing design (functionally and aesthetically)....then I have a problem. Stealing someone's work is wrong....period. Taking a general idea of someone and expanding on it (be that making it better or cheaper by sacrificing features) is a grey area that we all have to embrace or else everything invented would be a monopoly-type item and there'd be no pricing competition or reason to progress to make your item better than the competition.
