I was vaping in the hallways at my college a few weeks ago and one of my classmates saw me and asked me if I was vaping. I was like hell yeah. I was using my joye 510 and he was tripping on how small it was and how he had never seen one so small. He started telling me about his and how he would bring it next class. The next class he joined me in the hallway with his vaporizer, he had this fat looking thing that I have never seen before and after a few seconds I smelled a funny smell that I hadn't encountered in years. He had a personal maryjane vaporizer and he was mad puffing on it lol. I think we had a miscommunication the past week. I didn't say anything and we both went back to class to take our final, he left class after our final and he said, actual quote "Damn dude, I am going to have to take this class again next semester".

That's why most of my stuff stays in the house,I don't think Maxi with a map tank would go over to good..

I'm going to say you're wrong. I also think for every person that accuses you of smoking something illegal using a mod, there will be 10 that accuse you of smoking using an 808 or a 510. I vape my homemade box mod everywhere and no one has a problem with it. If you want to sneak around and act like you're doing something wrong, don't be surprised if these things wind up as restricted as smoking.

Very respectfully, MickeyRat, I must disagree.

People form opinions regarding new things based on their opinions of things they are already familiar with. This is because we use hierarchical learning. When they see a PV, they will first try to identify it based on what they know.

If it looks like a cigarette, they will see it as an odd cigarette. They may confront the vaper; but a closer look will tell them it is something different and they will associate the new information about vaping with the legal act of smoking tobacco. It's subconscious, sort of an automatic filing system.

If they see something that looks like it came from a head shop, they will associate the new knowledge with an illegal act. This is based solely on which erroneous first impression they got due to the hierarchical learning I mentioned earlier. It can cause them to become prejudiced against vaping because they always associate it with an illegal activity.

As you may have guessed, I watch WAY too much PBS. My above hypothesis, however, is based on good science. As with everything, there will be individual variation. There are people out there who can accept vaping as separate from any other activity, but most won't be able to fully separate vaping from their earlier knowledge. I personally feel more comfortable associating vaping with smoking tobacco knowing that time will separate the two in peoples' minds as vaping becomes more prominent in the public eye.

Perhaps a PV that more closely resembles a fine tobacco pipe would be the best option in public. They are often viewed as quaint and charming by Americans.

I have to disagree Critter Man.

I use my mod everywhere. When someone looks at me funny I go out of my way to tell that person what I am doing to try and educate the public and if that person might be a smoker, hopefully give them an option to quit that they didn't have before meeting me. If we all go around with our PVs that look like cigs just to appease the public then nobody will ask that all important question "What is that?"

Bigfoot, that's why I called it a hypothesis. I've yet to test it. The science itself is sound, but we all know full well that humans are a wildly unpredictable variable. I do not disapprove of people using mods in public. Hopefully, most people are unfamiliar with the items purchased from head shops and will not have a previous bias on which to base their views regarding vaping.

Sadly, in my area, folks are quite familiar with the "tobacco pipes" I was referring to earlier. My black w/ blue LED 401 should encourage folks to get curious, however. I actually think the blue LED will help get people curious as an orange or no LED wouldn't draw attention to the fact that it is something different.

Just my viewpoint. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that people are so willing to politely disagree with me on this subject. This kind of discussion is fascinating to me and I'm grateful for everyone's views. You folks are alright! The more we talk about this, the more vapers will find an approach that works for the people they encounter.

You give me a like then disagree with me. Nice touch and a great way to get my attention. :)

However, you're right about the way people think but, you're wrong about the way they react in this context. They see something that looks like a cigarette and the reaction is immediately negative. Many don't look any closer. You're smoking or you're trying to look like you're smoking and they don't like it either way. End of story. You're doing something they have a slot for and there's no new opinion to form.

OTOH they see you smoking something that looks like it came from a head shop but, it's completely out of context. So the association doesn't happen the way you imagine. I'm no college student even my daughters are a little long in the tooth for that. So, they see a man in his fifties, in a nice restaurant and it looks like he's openly smoking something you're completely unfamiliar with. If he was younger and in a back alley, you might think drugs but, in this context, it doesn't feel right. That's what makes people look closer not mimicking something they are familiar with and detest.

Sneak around and stealth vape with an 808 in public all you do is anger people.

I may have already related this story earlier in this thread but, it definitely fits here because it illustrates my point. I normally ask before I vape in a restaurant. I've yet to be turned down. However, I did get told by the manager of one restaurant that he'd had a problem with a guy vaping a cigarette looking kit at the bar. Customers kept complaining about the guy smoking. He said to go ahead but, I'd have to stop if anyone complained. In the same restaurant, I vaped my box mod all I wanted without one complaint.

Mickey, I'm a 30 year old longhair with a baby face. I can't get away with it like you can, but I wish I could. :toast: It really does depend on context. Folks see me walking into a Walmart with a mod box, you can bet I'll be having a conversation with security in short order. Perhaps I'll have a different experience than I expect, I just hope it's positive. :2cool:

Even a younger person doing it out in the open is likely to get the further investigation rather than automatic condemnation provided they are doing it out in the open and not trying to hide it. People as a general rule, don't use illegal substances right out in the open.

The iffy place is your car because people do things they wouldn't do out in the open in them.

Now, I'm going to probably aggravate people by saying this, but I just hate misinformation, so I'm going to anyway. So called "Medicinal Dispensaries" already sell, um, loaded cartomizers in the great state of california... Don't act offended if an officer who knows exactly what you are using asks to smell your vapor.

I've only had this happen to me once. I was waiting for the Mall Shuttle during lunch, vaping away on my eGo and two ladies walked up to the stop. One of them started that annoying "cough" and made some snarky remark about smokers. I turned around, showed her my PINK EGO and said "This is not a cigarette and I'm not smoking, but thanks for faking!" They both turned red and walked away.

Been there...lol I had a whole bus-stop of people laughing...(and no it wasn't a pink Ego..lol)

As far as I now, these things wouldn't work. The ...ehm... active ingredient is an oil. Oil and atomizers/cartomizers don't work well together, and that's an understatement.

By the way, just to be clear: yes I am Dutch, but I haven't touched the stuff in 25 years. And if I was tempted now, if only for medical reasons, it would most certainly not try to put it in an ecig. There's lots of better ways.
