I saw a huge thread going somewhere around here about how bad silica wicks are for you. They were all using stuff like bamboo string, cotton string, cotton gauze, etc. I'm not sure I buy into the silica wicks being bad, but was interested about the other wicking materials.

I guess everything is bad for you... And probably always an organic solution. I have seen that thread and read it some. But at this point, I personally haven't done any research on the matter. Silica doesn't burn in half and I am not eating it, so for now, that is what I will use. :)

Update and Caution!!!!!!! My tastebuds are not trustworthy!!!

That drip test I did of ParrotHead the other night seriously affected my taste perception for the rest of the night and most of yesterday. ParrotHead itself is darn tasty. I only vaped about 6 drops on it's own atty. But, afterwards, trying to vape Bobas, all I could taste was lime. I swear I could taste lime in Bobas. Different atty, and tried cartos, too. Then I tried Gandalf again and it had hardly any flavor. Tried the Cherry Bomb again and it tasted better. Heck, now I don't know what anything tastes like. You cannot trust my tastebuds.

That happens to me when I vape anything cinnamon. It just kills my taste buds for hours.

When in doubt, it tastes like chicken.

...This stuff from MOV is working like a charm. Expecially in my Phoenix atty...

I was reading up on the Phoenix tonight (I'm still up, so it's my tonight). They are really
inexpensive, and seem to be easy to rebuild. As that the way you see it?

I like a bridgeless atomizer, so I don't know if I'd cotton to all that wicking (pardon my pun).

I will firstly admit that I am not even close to the end all authority on dripping. The Phoenix is the only thing I have ever used. They are built well and yes, they are super easy to rebuild. Best $9 I have ever spent.

Euros and Aussies have been vaping four years longer than Americans. They'll keel over before we do if silica is bad for you. They are serving as my distant early warning.

Yeah, I wasn't convinced by his magnified slides of a wick, either. But, in a pinch or as a much cheaper alternative for wick - a ball of white cotten crochet string boiled and turned into wicking material is pretty cheap. It peaves me they charge $$ for a few inches of wick and wire worth a penny.

IDK about the "bad for you" bit, but I can testify that cotton cheesecloth wicks in my Penelopes are delivering tons of vapor and spot-on flavor! The flavor I get from the cheesecloth wick compared to silica is night and day ... I use genuine Joyetech standard atomizers for juice evaluation and taste testing, and truthfully, the flavor I'm getting from these CC wicks is a dead match!

Well, I've made up my mind I want to get one. There's no sense in me ordering it until I
get an ohm meter, though, cuz all directions say to have one, and I know if I didn't, I'd
be tempted to go ahead and use it anyway.

Then again, the one that comes already built should be fine and last me for a little while,
right? One vendor sells it for around $15 with five extra wicks.

Interesting. And, how long does a cheesecloth wick last? Is a Penelope an atomizer or a tank/atty? I've always been baffled on what makes the difference in flavor from one device to another. To me, it makes no sense. But, I swear I taste more flavor from cartomizers than any clearo. Others say the opposite. It's juice being sizzled on an atomizer, we aren't smoking the wicks or filler unless we are letting the juice get too low. Makes no sense to me.

When I (very) briefly (in the beginning of my vaping career) used cartos, I could always taste the filler. I didn't even realize it till I used my first clearo. Maybe I just bought cheap cartos, I can't really remember. I know lots of people swear by them, so it's entirely possible it was just my personal taste buds. My first clearo was the same day as my last analog.

Cartos never did it for me either. That's not to say clearos don't have their issues too, but overall I thought they were better than cartos. I never tried a carto tank and often wonder how good they are. Like everything else, they get mixed reviews. Meanwhile, this Shadowfax in my clearo is making me happy.

The Penelope is a rebuildable atomizer (RBA) with a 3ml integrated tank (or, if you have one of the new Kir Fanis Ice clear tanks for the Penelope, 4ml). I have two Penelopes and I re-wick/re-coil them about every two weeks ... depends on the juices; thick stuff like Boba's needs it more frequently. Once you learn how (I learned everything I needed to learn with just two videos; one by Igetcha69 and the other by Quigsworth ... I've refined my technique by watching others, but those two are the essentials), cleaning, re-wicking and re-coiling a Penelope takes about 15-20 minutes. It can be done faster, of course, but I am fairly meticulous and that's why my wicks and coils last so long. Actually, since I like to fiddle and experiment with coils and coil-making techniques, I probably re-do my Penelopes more frequently than I really need to ... one time when I was out of Kanthal, I used the same wick/coil for five weeks and it hardly changed ... of course, I do clean the Penelopes after every tankful, so they don't have a chance to get grungy!

The flavor IMO from a carto in a tank is greatly improved over a carto on its own. I have a Phiniac and it is quite an attractive and well made piece of equipment. I have abandoned it in favor of the Nova. It's just a matter of the Nova being more hassle free.
