I've had massive problems with AVG, getting it fully un-installed was only one of them. I've been on AVAST ever since. Everything is hunky-dory, and I don't go to questionable websites. All my passwords are different from each other and as long and complicated as allowed. There is a good reason why AVAST gets far more downloads per week on CNET than AVG does. Speaking of viruses and H4©K3r$...

I was reading the OUTSIDE! thread that had all the hullabaloo last night/early this morning. It had an awful lot of people reading it for a closed thread. I'm glad I wasn't in on that poo storm, I would have gotten all kinds of wound up at best. At worst some evil people out there in the interwebverse could have made me one of their targets. Pretty freaky stuff going on, I hope you're in the clear Robin. Every single time I post something in an OUTSIDE! thread I eventually regret it. That's where I got my one and only warning from a moderator. I've been paranoid ever since, and that goes 10 fold for FB.

So far I seem to be. Mr. Robin is a computer guy and has firewalls and security and encrypted email stuff. I've pretty much locked down my Facebook. Outside! is not seen by anyone except members of ECF, that's what the mod said anyway. I'm ok. It just freaked me out last night seeing my avatar on that creeps Facebook page. Which is down for now. So on that note, I'm going to get some sleep tonight.

The straight line winds caused trees all in the road, trampolines everywhere, debris all over the road like pine cones and limbs and roof shingles. I get almost home from driving through all this stuff and a huge tree was across the road. I mean I could have walked home. So I had to turn around and go all the way through another town to get home. Scary stuff. I have a new respect for straight line winds.

My main problem with AVG was the auto update. Every time I boot-up, it would basically freeze my computer until it was finished, which can take a few minutes with my atrociously slow internet speed. That issue probably wouldn't bother any of you lucky folks. I used to like AVG, but it became a nuisance.

I should have mentioned that AVAST also has a free version. They're both good though, especially for free.

Anyone close to this forecasted area for tomorrow please stay vigilant and safe. I worked as a weather forecaster for 5 years in the Air Force before retraining into Air Traffic Control, and these outlooks are usually pretty spot-on for pinpointing the severe weather during the summer months.

OK computer geeks...another question.

Any reason to spend $40/year on a name brand antivirus (McAfee, Norton). I have had McAfee for years but wonder how necessary it is.

Free AVG. Daughter-in-law, who works in banking and builds computers for friends and family on the side, got me started on AVG several years ago. Never had a problem, but does tend to slow your PC down a bit....

Not if you use a Linux OS. Don't need any anti-virus at all. Otherwise I use the Avast free version on a Windows install.

If it is an older laptop a varient of Ubuntu would run smoother. Anything 6-7 years old should be fine. I use an 8 year old Toshiba with 2Gib ram.

This is the latest version and runs fine: Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail)

This is what I am using because I do not like the Ubuntu Unity desktop environment: Ubuntu-GNOME 13.04 (Raring Ringtail)

A light weight version for older computers is: Lubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) and Xubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail)

Ubuntu will read a Windows partition on the same or separate drive if you dual boot.

There is a Linux Vapers sub-forum on ECF though not very active.

Ok just a check in with the Army. Oklahoma got hit hard by tornados the last two days. One direct hit was on a couple of schools. Death till is still being counted. Last I heard was 31 confirmed. Lots of kids missing.
Think ill just shut the door on the boars nest and play with juice and mods today.
