Thanks, I'll let you know how my vanilla in eliquid goes.

There's a bit of a misunderstanding here though Sun, it wasn't me who was talking about soaking vanilla before, I can't remember who that was. I'm only getting started with vanilla experiments.

The beans I've got smell lovely, I keep sniffing them. It's great to have quit smoking so I can smell things now :D

Kate--you gave me that advise over at E-cigtest or RighttoVape--I do not remember which one--but that is where you said to give it a try and that you make your own extract (not e-liquid) all the time for the Holidays as gifts. You did say you where going to give it a try --not that you had actually done it--Thanks again for the suggestion--Sun

I've read Sun answer now. Out of curiosity, why were those flavors no-goers?

I LOVE VANILLA AFTER MY COFFEE! Absolutely LOVE it, never tought I would have found such a FINE replacement for my aftercoffee analog. It's probably a common stereotype the italian+espresso one, and well... I AM that stereotype XD I do even mill my chosen blend, and for me a cig after a nice espresso is a must.

Yes, i was drinking my evening coffee and vaping my vanilla while writing this XD

Have you managed to get a good vanilla flavour with anything yet?

Kate--I am still waiting the 3 months of soaking the Vanilla Beans--it is going into week 7. So I will let you know when I after the week 12. I sure hope their are some results as Vanilla is a tough one. I really would like to know what they use in the Commercial e-liquids for their Vanilla---Sun

I think it's a safe bet to say they are using the vanilla absolute... There's really nothing else left. Hope someone tries it and lets us know. I might buy some later, like in a few weeks.

BUT PLEASE PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS:

The first link I posted above is (apparently) not a product safe for internal use.

I'm seeing some confusion concerning products labeled as Vanilla Absolute as to whether they are solvent extracted or CO2 extracted and it appears there are different forms without explanation for why they may or may not be useful for intended purposes.

The vanilla absolute I linked to before (I cannot edit that post) but it is referred to as a 20x extract... unclear on any differences here, but on their site it specifically states: reserved exclusively for perfume not for internal use.

HERE IS THE ACTUAL LINK FOR THE ONE DESCRIBED THAT INCLUDES FOOD FLAVORING AS A PUBLISHED PURPOSE FOR THAT PRODUCT:

Vanilla absolute soluble 1/2 oz (Vanilla Plantifolia Andrews)
Amber to dark brown liquid
Odor: Vanilla powerful
USE: Perfume, cosmetic, food flavors
Price: 77.80 US $

http://www.essential-oil.org/proddetail.asp?prod=1VanAbs15

HERE IS ANOTHER SOURCE THAT WE CAN ASSUME IS SAFE:

http://www.neroliane.eu/product_info.php?products_id=854

It appears non-toxic but there have been no formal studies according to one source.
ONE WOULD USE A VERY TINY AMOUNT AND I DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH THAT WOULD BE.

I AM SURE THERE MUST BE OTHER SOURCES OUT THERE THAT MAY EVEN BE MORE AFFORDABLE THAN THIS BUT ADVISE TO MAKE SURE IF NO OTHER INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE THAT THERE IS SOMEWHERE A STATEMENT OF INTENDED USE THAT INDICATES FOOD FLAVORING AS IN THESE EXAMPLES.

I THINK IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH TRYING.

EDIT:

OOPS... THEN I READ IN AN INGREDIENT LIST POSTED ON HERE SOMEWHERE THAT THE E-LIQUID MANUFACTURERS MAY BE USING : Ethyl vanillin

ETHYL VANILLIN is a synthetic compound that is 3½ times stronger in flavor than real vanilla, although the flavor is not quite the same. It is used in the creation and/or manufacturing of fragrance and flavor concentrates of all types.

OK peeps, this is where I first started out when I was looking into the vanilla flavor problem.

I was at a friend's store and they had these vanilla crystals on the shelf and I thought these would be excellent to use they smelled very strongly of vanilla. He has since sold the store and I've never seen them anywhere else.

When I started looking into the question to post on here I came across the absolute only after discovering that the vanilla crystals I could find were actually sugar crystals infused with vanilla. It now turns out that these crystals are different than the thing I actually saw at my friend's store.

HERE'S THE ACTUAL THING I MUST HAVE SEEN:

VANILLIN (NOT VANILLA)

Vanillin - Krinos - .75 oz jar : GreekInternetMarket.com

I'm guessing you can dissolve the crystals in the liquid just like with menthol crystals. We've talked about artificial flavors etc. but this IS apparently listed as an ingredient in some commercial e-juice.

In fact, it appears that various formulations are using a combination of both vanillin and vanilla extract! Search the forum for ethyl vanillin.

You're going to find this at some Mediterranean specialty shops I'm guessing.

Sorry I have not read the whole thread but saw somewhere else today mention that vanillin might be mutagenic.

~~

Don't laugh, but Supercook / Dr Oetker (a UK brand) vanilla natural extract is good (the only good one in the whole range IMO. No oils or colors. Reasonably strong flavor; certainly a great flavor (much better when vaped than whiffed from the bottle.

Kinablaoo--I have been working on this vanilla for 6 months--maybe you are going to come the the rescue here again--what are you relaying here as I have not scene this thread pop up for some time--I have had zero luck with Vanilla as the extract flavors have way to high an alcohol content and it takes over the flavor---Any ideas that will solve this issue as well--Thoughts? Always appreciated-----Sun

Let me know how it turn out for you, don't add too much banana flavor or it will overpower the vanilla.

Toby--this has been an ongoing quest for months now with no answers as all of the high end Vanilla's overpower the taste with thier high Alcohol ( expecally Lorann's) so I will be sure to be on the hunt for First--Thanks again---Sun

Well if anyone considers trying the vanillin crystals along with a vanilla extract let me know. If it's in the pure crystal form it seems to me that you can't get any stronger vanilla taste than that. The smell is intoxicating. It occurs to me that if you need to mix a vanilla absolute with alcohol as a carrier as has been suggested with the tobacco absolute that might be defeating the purpose.

While vanillin as commercially produced is artificial, manufactured from guaiacol or lignin, it is considered nature identical. It exists in nature as the most concentrated form of the vanilla flavor in vanilla beans:

"One of the main flavor components in Bourbon vanilla is vanillin, which imparts the bean with its distinctive vanilla flavor. Our bulk gourmet Madagascar vanilla beans are so rich in vanillin that the vanillin often crystallizes out to the surface of the vanilla bean as shown in the picture of vanilla beans below."

Vanillin Crystals - Bourbon Vanilla Beans

According to one report, and I don't know what to make of it: Krinos Vanillin is a white or yellowish crystalline compound extracted from vanilla beans. It is mostly used as a fragrance in perfumes and for flavoring baked goods.

Here are some links where you can buy the Krinos brand Vanillin for as little as $1.49 --

This is, more specifically, what the commercial e-liquid manufacturers are using and if you can find a supplier for the small quantities we would use, please post on here:

"Ethyl Vanillin is an important Aroma chemical with a stronger more intense vanilla-like aroma than vanillin. Its major applications are in the manufacture of fragrances, toiletries, detergents and food/beverages. Aromatic ethyl vanillin is manufactured through a synthetic process with raw materials derived from fossil hydrocarbons. Aromatic is delivered in crystalline form. Due to its more intense flavour and fragrance profile, Aromatic ethyl vanillin is between 2 and 4 times stronger than normal vanillin grades."

This is the smallest quantity of ethyl vanillin I can find at the moment to purchase:

Ethyl Vanillin, NF
3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde
N.F. Functional Use: Flavor; Perfume
125 GM $53.58
