The wick appears to be wet and working and it does not turn bright red unless I hold the button down for a long time. I burned it for about five or six minutes and then about five minutes more. Still tastes terrible.
I actually wrapped this one myself. The first one was not that great. Tasted like machine oil. Everything is working ok with the coil.
Let's just say that the o-rings are self-lubing on mine (and that is not a plus). And no they are not swelling.
To be honest, I am a ....... I can't even get a hit right now because of the damn switch. I may have to get my old homemade bottom feeder out just so I can vape. I got one for my neighbor too and he is having similar problems with his switch, but it is a known issue at this point.

If you're tasting burnt metal, you have a short somewhere on the wick. If not the the coil is warped too loosely and the juice is burning up and leaving a gap that is getting very hot.
If it is a short, you can fix it easily by shifting the wire a bit till the coil glows evenly or pull it apart and re-oxidize the wick and try again.
If the coil is not touching the wick everywhere then you will need to remove and wrap and coil it again. Putting a snug fitting needle in the wick helps tremendously when putting a new coil in. Pull the wire moderately as you wrap with a needle nosed pliers and you should end up with a good coil. Break it in and you should be able to vape happily again.
This gets much easier after doing it a few times so don't get discouraged. Soon you'll be making mesh/coils that last for months and take you just minutes to make.

This is my first gen type atty, so I'm learning still. I see a lot of people are having wicking problems still. When I went to boba's, I had to go to the 325 mesh b/c it's 100% VG. I couldn't get it to wick and I played with it, rewrapped it, tried bottle wetting it and burning several times, etc. What I ended up doing was to unroll it slightly, cut about a quarter inch off along the length, re-roll it, put it back in. Then I left the height about even with the center post nut so there was wick at the top that could get wet, but wasn't getting heat from the coil. I THINK that makes it easier to get it wet, and stay that way, if you are getting a lot of dry hits you might try this. I can pretty much just keep hitting on it and not get a dry hit now. I'm not saying yet it is the correct way or the BEST way, but I'm very happy with how it's running right now. Aside from switching to a high PG juice to all VG, I've not had any problems at all. From the time I switched to the VG until I got it burning right took about an hour - hour and a half.
Pics are horrible and I don't think they will help anyone much, but here are a couple shots...
